In Haaretz zei PLO woordvoerder Rabbo woensdag dat hij bereid is Israel te erkennen in ruil voor de concessie dat de 1949 wapenstilstandslijnen de definitieve grenzen van de staat worden:
Palestine Liberation Organization official Yasser Abed Rabbo said on Wednesday that the Palestinians will be willing to recognize the State of Israel in any way that it desires, if the Americans would only present a map of the future Palestinian state that includes all of the territories captured in 1967, including East Jerusalem.
"It is important for us to know where are the borders of Israel and where are the borders of Palestine. Any formulation the Americans present – even asking us to call Israel the 'Chinese State' – we will agree to it, as long as we receive the 1967 borders."

Dit werd door critici van Israel aangehaald om te bewijzen hoe vredelievend en flexibel de Palestijnen zijn, in tegenstelling tot die oorlogszuchtige zionisten. Rabbo kreeg echter een lading kritiek over zich heen vanwege deze uitspraken, die je zou kunnen interpreteren als dat hij bereid zou zijn Israel als Joodse staat te erkennen als het zich geheel achter de pre-1967 wapenstilstandslijnen zou terugtrekken, en daarom heeft hij zijn uitspraken ingetrokken en zelfs ontkend dat hij überhaupt met de Haaretz sprak. Het Palestijnse Ma'an schrijft:
The Gaza government called on Thursday for the immediate resignation of a PLO official who was quoted in the press as agreeing to a conditional recognition of Israel as a Jewish state.
Secretary-General Yasser Abed Rabbo was quoted in the Israeli daily Haaretz as saying the PLO would recognize Israel "according to the formulation of the government within the hour" if Israel agreed to 1967 borders.
According to the daily, Abed Rabbo said "Any formulation the Americans present – even asking us to call Israel the 'Chinese State' – we will agree to it, as long as we receive the 1967 borders. We have recognized Israel in the past, but Israel has not recognized the Palestinian state."
However, Abed Rabbo told Ma'an he had only spoken with Agence France-Presse over the issue.

Zo gaat het altijd. Als er maar het kleinste vermoeden is dat er beweging is aan Palestijnse kant en men een concessie doet, hoe onacceptabel die ook is voor Israel, dan wordt die onmiddelijk onder druk ontkend en teruggenomen. Daarom kan Abbas niet te goeder trouw onderhandelen, en daarom zijn er zo weinig gematigde Palestijnen en daarom probeert men nu uit de onderhandelingen te stappen en tegelijkertijd de schuld bij Israel te leggen. Werkelijke concessies doen is onmogelijk, en levensgevaarlijk.
