Zucht. Wat drijft zo’n man, om in Duitsland te gaan lopen verkondigen dat de Joden de Holocaust aan zichzelf hebben te danken? Hij heeft overigens niet lang geleden gezegd dat de Israelische entering van de Mavi Marmara erger is dan wat de nazi’s deden. Je vraagt je af of hij nog wel helemaal bij zinnen is. Hij is per slot van rekening ook niet meer de jongste.

 

She added that “The German government not only has failed to compensate Holocaust victims – but by its onesided and obsessive focus on alleged Israeli ‘sins,’ it seems that the money has been used to minimize the Jewish experience, while at the same time heightening the inflammatory rhetoric and tension surrounding the conflict.”

 

Dat is denk ik niet helemaal waar. Duitsland heeft bij mijn weten royaal gecompenseerd (voor zover je zulke misdaden kunt compenseren natuurlijk) en in geen land staan er meer Denkmale en dergelijke ‘opdat wij niet vergeten’. Er is echt veel aandacht voor, en terecht. Dat er nu een programma is ontdekt dat niet deugt is triest en pijnlijk en moet zo snel mogelijk worden recht gezet. Uit het artikel wordt overigens niet duidelijk wat de EVZ verder allemaal doet. Er worden ook geen andere voorbeelden gegeven van anti-Israel retoriek en activiteiten in Duitsland.

In a statement issued to the Post, EVZ defended the Anne Frank school exchange program, saying it contributes to a “different perception of Jews through Palestinians” and combats “anti- Semitism and hostility toward Israel.”

Dat klinkt nogal tegenstrijdig. Het ‘andere beeld’ dat Palestijnen van Joden hebben, is niet bepaald fraai, en waarom zou je dat in Duitsland zo naar voren moeten brengen? Ik zou het logischer vinden dat men juist kritisch kijkt naar het beeld van de Joden in het Midden-Oosten, en leert zien hoe dicht bij elkaar antizionisme en antisemitisme soms liggen. Het beeld dat Palestijnen van Joden hebben draagt naar mijn idee niet echt bij aan het tegengaan van antisemitisme.

German program uses Shoah funds to play down Holocaust

School program is vehemently anti-Israel, NGO Monitor says; main focus was devoted to alleging Israeli violations and immorality.

BERLIN – The German Holocaust Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility, Future (EVZ)” has used public monies to finance a second anti-Israel high school program that includes elements of Holocaust denial, according to a new report issued on Friday by the Jerusalem-based watchdog organization NGO Monitor.

The new revelations add to the bombshell disclosure in late September that EVZ provided 21,590 euros to a dubious 2010-11 student exchange program between an east German high school (Gerhart Hauptmann) and an Israeli- Arab school in Nazareth (Masar Institute for Education) to produce brochures delegitimizing Israel’s existence. The brochure compared Israel to the former communist East German state and depicted Jewish pupils in distorted and biased terms.

The Jerusalem-based watchdog organization NGO Monitor issued to The Jerusalem Post in early October an eye-popping report about a second EVZ-funded school program in which Holocaust funds were ostensibly misappropriated to finance playing down the severity of the Holocaust and promoting hatred of Israel.

According to the report, between March-July 2011, EVZ contributed funds to a partner agency for a program titled “Human Rights – Rights of Occupation,” with the German (Anne Frank School in Gütersloh) and Palestinian (School of Hope in Ramallah) students.

The NGO Monitor document notes that “while Palestinian participants questioned “whether the Holocaust had really happened to that extent,” the main focus was devoted to alleging Israeli violations and immorality, not on Holocaust education.

The prominent German-Jewish journalist, Henryk M. Broder, has slammed Meyer as an “expert on applied Judeophobia” who traffics in the “brown filth”of the Nazi era.

The head of NGO Monitor, Prof. Gerald Steinberg, told the Post that “the latest revelations about the Remembrance Responsibility Future Foundation are morally shocking and unacceptable. Instead of teaching young Palestinians who are taught to question whether the Holocaust ever happened, the Foundation has created programs that exploit this tragedy as part of the demonization of Israel. The role of Hajo Meyer, an elderly Holocaust survivor, in this effort adds to the moral abuse.”

Steinberg continued: “To say that this contributes to delegitimization of Israel and modern anti-Semitism understates the case. Instead of using the funding to educate about and compensate victims of the Holocaust, the EVZ sponsors programs for German students that reflect the political war against Israel, and greatly distort the Arab-Israeli conflict. German foundations and their officials have a particular obligation to be sensitive to such unacceptable activities.”

According to the website of the German school – named after German-Jewish teenager Anne Frank who was murdered in Bergen-Belsen – from her name a program has been established as a “point of reference for value assessments.”

Post phone and e-mail queries seeking a comment from Gunnar Weykam, a teacher at the school who runs the exchange program, were not answered as to why the school participates in anti- Israel activities and permits the Holocaust to be downplayed. Weykam coordinates the school’s “Palestine Project.”

Anne Herzberg, NGO Monitor’s legal advisor, told the Post: “This program needs much more than changes and evaluation. EVZ must shut down immediately, and only begin again once the entire program, committee members, and staff has been entirely revamped.”

She added that “The German government not only has failed to compensate Holocaust victims – but by its onesided and obsessive focus on alleged Israeli ‘sins,’ it seems that the money has been used to minimize the Jewish experience, while at the same time heightening the inflammatory rhetoric and tension surrounding the conflict.”

Jewish NGOs and academic experts on anti-Semitism in Germany accuse the EVZ with stoking hatred of the Jewish state and ignoring modern expressions of anti-Semitism in Germany.

The EVZ was founded in 2000 with a contribution of 5.2 billion euros by the Federal German government and German industry to compensate former slave and forced laborers during the Nazi period.

NGO Monitor cited in its report on the pro-Palestinian activities of the Anne Frank school that “as part of this program, the German students concentrated ‘on article 17 of the UN Human Rights Charter of 1948, in which the right to ‘own property by yourself as well as together with others’ was established. The German students have discovered and documented through conversations with victims, lawyers, human-rights workers and peace activists, whether, that and how the State of Israel violates this right.”

According to NGO Monitor: “During an August 2011 meeting with the mayor of Gütersloh, the students ‘discussed the question what our responsibility for the German past means and if it doesn’t implicate that we need to criticize all human rights violations, no matter who commits them.”

The German students met with Farida Amad in April 2011, during a visit to the “women’s society Inash-Il- Osra” in Al-Bireh. Amad said “Maybe we can’t liberate Palestine in 50, 80 or 100 years, but I’m 100 percent convinced that there will be a time when we get it back,” noted the NGO Monitor report.

Multiple e-mails and phone queries to Volker Beck, a Green Party deputy who sits on the EVZ Board of Trustees and frequently issues statements about countering anti-Semitism and hatred of Israel, were not returned in connection with financial mismanagement at EVZ.

Those Palestinians are terribly suppressed, of course, and longs to go "home", which we are led to understand is present day Israel. Of course, the situation for the Palestinians is "unjust". In order to get water through to the Palestinians (Obviously, the Israelis have stolen it) Tuva's daddy gets those brutal Israeli soldiers drunk.

Norway: Children's book depicts Israelis as evil

This makes any claim that Norwegian elites only want to criticize Israeli policies, but never engage in anti-Semitism ring very hollow.

As for the author, an MD and psychiatrist, it is frightening how he will use his position as an authority to contribute to inflaming an already very difficult conflict. This stinks to high heaven of bigotry, racism, and yes that horrible word, classic anti-Semitism.  Maybe the Disciplinary committee  of the Norwegian Medical Association should consider whether he is fit for the privilege he holds?  It is something really frightening when fellow medical professionals only think with their white coats, everything is a sterile laboratory experiment, nobody feels the pain, and nobody is put at risk.

Children's' books are not highest on the translator's list over important assignments-usually. The book above (This is a copy of the publisher's description) is an exemption.

First of all, the title: It literally says "Dad is a pirate".
Then, the publishers: Cappelen Damm is not some fringe publisher, but on the contrary one of Norway's largest publishing houses.

Most important, however, is the text and the illustrations- and remember, this is a book intended for children age5/ 6+.

Diplomatieke rel, de uitnodiging aan de ambassadeur van Israël om de jaarlijkse Accenta-beurs in Gent te bezoeken werd bruusk ingetrokken. Reden is dat gastland Saoedi-Arabië het niet ziet zitten dat een Israëlische functionaris op de beurs aanwezig is. Vlaams minister-president Kris Peeters reageerde ontstemd op het voorval en liet Joods Actueel weten dat hij de de organisatie hierover zal aanspreken. 

 

Accenta is de grootste beurs van Vlaanderen met 500 standhouders die dit jaar zo"n 100,000 bezoekers zal verwelkomen in Flanders Expo te Gent. Deze 66ste editie gaat door van 10 tot en met 18 september. Zoals elk jaar werden een resem hoge gasten en ambassadeurs uitgenodigd, waaronder de vertegenwoordigster van Israël, mevrouw Tamar Samash. 

 

Kirsten Karlsson, de communicatiemedewerkster van Accenta bevestigde ook tegen Joods Actueel de intrekking van de uitnodiging: "Dat klopt inderdaad, de ambassadrice is niet welkom… Saoedi-Arabië is dit jaar het gastland… en enfin dat ligt gevoelig". 

 

Critici zijn er niet over te spreken dat de organisatie gezwicht is voor de financiële druk van de Saoedische geldsponsors. "In dit Koninkrijk is het nog steeds aan Vlamingen en Belgen om te beslissen wie wel en niet wordt uitgenodigd. En "Israël is een officieel vertegenwoordigd land waar België en Vlaanderen volle diplomatieke betrekkingen mee onderhouden", aldus een bron bij de Israëlische ambassade. "Trouwens, premier Leterme is net terug van een werkbezoek aan Israël waarin hij pleitte voor meer samenwerking."

Cultural boycotts have their place. One cannot have anything but sympathy with the Holocaust survivors who set up pickets outside concert halls in 1950s America, demonstrating against the visit of Herbert von Karajan, a man who had joined the Nazi party not once, but twice. I bow to the rights of the PSC to protest peacefully outside the Royal Albert Hall. I bow to their right to try to convince us that the Israeli Phil is evil. Of course, one could legitimately ask, why, if they felt so keenly about human rights and democracy, they have never protested to the frequent visits by the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra, who perform clothed in the symbols of an authoritarian state, or the East-Western Divan, whose Arab members proudly represent some of the most vile dictatorships on earth.
But that's by the by. They had a right to stand outside and propagate their views. And they were granted that right. But then they went beyond this right. They imposed their protest on us to the extent that we were restricted in our freedom to do what we wanted. This is exactly the form of authoritarianism that the PSC claim to be attempting to end.

Er is inderdaad een groot verschil tussen het oproepen om niet van een dienst of product gebruik te maken omdat het in jouw ogen een slechte zaak dient, en het proberen mensen onmogelijk te maken dit te doen. Het laatste is een vorm van dwang, en is alleen geoorloofd in uitzonderlijke situaties. De anti-Israel boycot beweging overschrijdt deze grens wel vaker. Zoals ik eerder zei, ik hoop dat ze daardoor hun sympathie verspelen en men hun ware gezicht gaat zien.

A British arts review of the BBC Proms debacle

Police. Placards. Protests. And bag checks. It meant only one thing. Jews were performing at the Proms. Here we were in the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2011 witnessing a stage of musicians being barracked and abused for having the gall to be Jewish. Last year, four more Jewish musicians, the Jerusalem Quartet, had the cheek to perform and broadcast a recital at the Wigmore Hall. They were again heckled and hounded off air. No, not a portrait of Europe in the early 20th century, but Britain in the 21st. I wonder. In a few years, will Jews be able to make music publically in Britain at all?

If it wasn't all so depressingly shameful, it might have been amusing, such was the pathetic absurdity of the protests. The evening certainly started with comedy. A small bedraggled bunch of Palestinian protesters (all white, middle class and bearded of course) were scowling by a side entrance of the Royal Albert Hall. Opposite them an Irish Zionist, sporting the tricolour of Eire and the star of David, was goading them with an Irish jig. That was where the whole farce that is the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign's (PSC) boycott of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra should have remained: in the realms of risibility.

But it didn't stop there. A few minutes into a fuzzily luxuriant performance (even the triangle was being vibbed) of Webern's Passacaglia, Op 1, a bunch of protesters in the choir stands got to their feet and began to barrack. To the strains of Beethoven's Ode to Joy, they sang their anti-Israeli chants. I imagine a few of the audience and orchestral members would have been familiar with this sort of public abuse, from when they were children in mainland Europe.

They made it difficult to concentrate on the Webern, though Mehta made sure some of their fortissimos sliced through the taunts. They returned to dog the start of the Bruch Violin Concerto in G minor. Zubin Mehta, the Israel Philharmonic and Gil Shaham (pictured right) stood still, silent and calm, while the ushers and security swept out the protest. Amid this maelstrom, Mehta and Shaham, their patience wearing thin, tore into the opening bars. The work achieved a level of meaning and fury that no one will ever witness the like of again.

But while it was all sparks and springs in the outer movements, in the slow, both soloist and orchestra bowed to the softest, gentlest, most tender sound imaginable, as if they were reaching down to plant a kiss on a baby's crown. Not even the Neanderthals dared break this spell. Nor dared they interrupt Shaham's elegantly sculpted performance of the Preludio from Bach's Third Partita.

The BBC had by now switched off their live Radio 3 broadcast after the audience began barracking the barrackers at the beginning of the Bruch. It was understandable - no point giving the protesters publicity - but disappointing, considering that, if the listeners had been given an opportunity to hear the whole Prom, they would have heard the Prommers shouting down the protests, and the Israeli Phil ploughing on valiantly through their programme, to repeated standing ovations. That is, they would have heard us win.

...For some, something else had also been violated last night: the freedom of artistic expression. With qualifications, I am with them. I am not one of these people who thinks politics is above art. If people insist art and artists have the power to change lives for the better (and, boy, do music marketing people, with one eye on dwindling funds, keep insisting on this), they must also have the ability to change lives for the worse. Art, artists and musicians are, therefore, not sacrosanct. Break the law, rape a girl (yes, that's you I'm talking about, Polanski) and you should not be given a free ride simply because you are endowed with creative talent.

What do we do now? What can we do now? The protesters have all now walked free to hound some more Jews. The recorded concert - what's left of it - will be salvaged and aired next week. One thing, we do know: the Israel Phil won't be coming back to these shores in a hurry. And that's where things start becoming troubling. When we get into a position where programmers and arts organisations are forced to think twice about giving a platform to certain nationalities and races lest they incur the wrath of hooligans, we are in real danger of no longer being able to call ourselves civilised. The protesters didn't win last night. But they certainly did raise the stakes.

 

 

Anti-Israel protesten verstoren BBC Proms concert

 

Hoe extreem en wanhopig kun je zijn? Deze mensen willen duidelijk gehoord worden, en daar verpesten ze graag een mooie avond en concert voor. Er zijn veel legale manieren om gehoord te worden, en bovendien is het Palestijnse narratief al behoorlijk dominant in de media, maar dat is deze extremisten blijkbaar niet genoeg. Iedere Israeli, links of rechts, voor of tegen de bezetting, is fout en moet worden gestraft en geboycot. Het is een ziekelijke manier van denken. Er treden talloze artiesten op uit landen waar wel wat mee mis is maar daar worden die artiesten niet voor verantwoordelijk gehouden. Ooit het Russisch Staatscircus geboycot omdat Rusland rottigheid heeft uitgehaald in Tsjetsjenië? Of Amerikaanse dirigenten vanwege de oorlog in Irak? Chinese acrobaten vanwege Tibet? Natuurlijk niet. Deze actie laat goed zien hoe ziek de BDS beweging en veel anti-Israel activisten zijn. Ga vooral zo door jongens, zodat steeds meer mensen zien waar jullie voor staan: intolerantie, extremisme en racisme.

Anti-Israel protests disrupt BBC Proms concert

Protesters have disrupted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra's BBC Proms concert at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Several demonstrators in the hall shouted as Zubin Mehta stood to conduct Bruch's violin concerto. The rest of the audience booed in response.

BBC Radio 3 said it had to interrupt its live broadcast twice "as a result of sustained audience disturbance".

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign had earlier called on people to boycott the concert and urged the BBC to cancel it.

In a statement published on its website ahead of the Proms, the pro-Palestinian group claimed the IPO showed "complicity in whitewashing Israel's persistent violations of international law and human rights".

The BBC Proms Team tweeted: "We're sorry that the concert was taken off air following hall disturbance. Glad both pieces were heard by the audience in the RAH."

It later added: "We regret that as a result of sustained audience disturbance tonight's concert was taken off BBC Radio 3."

The performance, which consisted of four parts, was interrupted at about 19:45 BST and coverage was cut off again an hour later after more protests.

A spokeswoman for BBC Proms said it appeared each piece had been targeted by different protesters seated around the hall.

She said the broadcaster was "disappointed" the coverage had been taken off air but said the performance had continued in the hall.

About 30 people were removed by security but there were no arrests and no violence, she said.

The BBC's Tom Symonds said: "As Zubin Mehta stood up and began each piece a small group of protesters each time tried to stop the music.

"They sang, they shouted, they were met by boos by the audience and they had to be removed by the security staff."

Outside the concert hall a group of about 20 campaigners waved banners and sang songs in protest against the appearance of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO).

Several pro-Israeli groups met them with their own protest outside, our correspondent said.

He said it had been a "pretty disruptive" but the orchestra was said to have "taken it all in their stride and had smiles on their faces".

Ode to Joy

Regular Proms-goer Chris Keating said there were six or seven disturbances during the performance.

"The first was in a quiet passage of the first piece," he said.

"About a dozen protesters in the choir seats stood up with a banner saying Free Palestine and started chanting and singing to the tune of Beethoven's Ode to Joy.

"They were drowned out by the orchestra as the passage of music got louder and were ushered out."

'Riot atmosphere'

Theartsdesk.com music reviewer Igor Toronyi-Lalic, who was at the show, said: "The whole hall was groaning and trying to slow clap them out.

"It had the atmosphere of a riot."

There had been increased security measures for the concert, including bag searches and a heightened police presence.

Police confirmed there had been no arrests but there were heated exchanges between not only supporters of both political sides but also concert-goers angry at the disruption to their evening.

Anti-Israel protesters have targeted classical music performances before.

In August 2008, five members of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign disrupted a concert by the Jerusalem String Quartet at Edinburgh's Queen's Hall.

The BBC said it would broadcast part of the concert on 7 September at 14:30 BST.

 

 

Als de VS haar hulp aan de PA bevriest, zal Abbas dit geld hard nodig hebben voor lopende rekeningen.

EU geeft Palestijnen 115 miljoen euro extra

De Europese Unie gaat de financiële bijdrage voor de Palestijnse gebieden verhogen met 115 miljoen euro. In totaal is de Europese bijdrage voor de Palestijnen nu bijna 500 miljoen euro.

Het extra geld is bedoeld voor het aanleggen van watervoorzieningen, het versterken van de rechtsstaat en onderwijs en gezondheidszorg voor vluchtelingen binnen de Palestijnse gebieden en in Syrië, Jordanië en Libanon.

Eigen staat
Een deel van het geld is bestemd voor het opbouwen van een gezonde economie en een rechtsstaat. Daarmee loopt de EU vooruit op de vorming van een Palestijnse staat.

De Palestijnse president Mahmoud Abbas wil op 20 september bij de Verenigde Naties een verzoek om erkenning van de staat indienen. Israël is hier fel tegen. Ook Nederland zal niet met de erkenning instemmen, heeft minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Uri Rosenthal (VVD) aangegeven. Libanon is in september voorzitter van de VN-Veiligheidsraad en steunt de aanvraag van Abbas.

Half miljard
De EU gaf al 185 miljoen euro aan de Palestijnse gebieden. Daarnaast geeft Europa 145 miljoen euro directe financiële hulp aan de Palestijnse autoriteit en 40 miljoen aan het fonds van de Verenigde Naties dat Palestijnse vluchtelingen helpt.

Met de 115 miljoen euro geeft de EU jaarlijks in totaal 485 miljoen euro aan de Palestijnen. Nederland geeft daarnaast ongeveer 50 miljoen euro per jaar. Onlangs stemde een Kamermeerderheid ervoor de subsidiekraan dicht te draaien als Palestijnen niet ophouden met het verheerlijken van geweld.

Norway's Bigotry

Is terrorism against Israel really more justified than terrorism against Norway?

 

In a recent interview, Norway's Ambassador to Israel has suggested that Hamas terrorism against Israel is more justified than the recent terrorist attack against Norway. His reasoning is that, "We Norwegians consider the occupation to be the cause of the terror against Israel." In other words terrorism against Israeli citizens is the fault of Israel. The terrorism against Norway, on the other hand, was based on "an ideology that said that Norway, particularly the Labor Party, is foregoing Norwegian culture." It is hard to imagine that he would make such a provocative statement without express approval from the Norwegian government.

I can't remember many other examples of so much nonsense compressed in such short an interview. First of all, terrorism against Israel began well before there was any "occupation". The first major terrorist attack against Jews who had long lived in Jerusalem and Hebron began in 1929, when the leader of the Palestinian people, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, ordered a religiously-motivated terrorist attack that killed hundreds of religious Jews-many old, some quite young. Terrorism against Jews continued through the 1930s. Once Israel was established as a state, but well before it captured the West Bank, terrorism became the primary means of attacking Israel across the Jordanian, Egyptian and Lebanese borders. If the occupation is the cause of the terror against Israel, what was the cause of all the terror that preceded any occupation?

Norway is the most anti-Semitic and anti-Israel country in Europe today.

I was not surprised to hear such ahistorical bigotry from a Norwegian Ambassador. Norway is the most anti-Semitic and anti-Israel country in Europe today. I know, because I experienced both personally during a recent visit and tour of universities. No university would invite me to lecture, unless I promised not to discuss Israel. Norway forbids Jewish ritual slaughter, but not Islamic ritual slaughter. Its political and academic leaders openly make statements that cross the line from anti-Zionism to anti-Semitism, such as when Norway's former Prime Minister condemned Barak Obama for appointing a Jew as his Chief of Staff. No other European leader would make such a statement and get away with it. In Norway, this bigoted statement was praised, as were similar statements made by a leading academic.

The very camp that was attacked by the lone terrorist was engaged in an orgy of anti-Israel hatred the day before the shooting. Yet I would not ever claim that it was Norway's anti-Semitism that "caused" the horrible act of terrorism against young Norwegians.

I know of no reasonable person who has tried to justify the terrorist attacks against Norway. Yet there are many Norwegians who not only justify terrorist attacks against Israel, but praise them, support them, help finance them, and legitimate them.

The world must unite in condemning and punishing all terrorist attacks against innocent civilians, regardless of the motive or purported cause of the terrorism.

Norway, as a nation, has failed to do this. It wants us all to condemn the terrorist attack on its civilians, and we should all do that, but it refuses to live by a single standard.

Nothing good ever comes from terrorism, so don't expect the Norwegians to learn any lessons from its own victimization. As the Ambassador made clear in his benighted interview, "those of us who believe [the occupation to be the cause of the terror against Israel] will not change their minds because of the attack in Oslo." In other words, they will persist in their bigoted view that Israel is the cause of the terrorism directed at it, and that if only Israel were to end the occupation (as it offered to do in 2000-2001 and again in 2007), the terrorism will end. Even Hamas, which Norway supports in many ways, has made clear that it will not end its terrorism as long as Israel continues to exist. Hamas believes that Israel's very existence is the cause of the terrorism against it. That sounds a lot like the ranting of the man who engaged in the act of terrorism against Norway.

The time is long overdue for Norwegians to do some deep soul searching about their sordid history of complicity with all forms of bigotry ranging from the anti-Semitic Nazis to the anti-Semitic Hamas. There seems to be a common thread.

 

Geschilde appeltjes: de Sudeten-Duitse ballingen

 

Een aardig stukje, dat aangeeft dat de geschiedenis niet altijd recht kan doen aan ieder individu. Lang niet alle Sudetenduitsers waren voor de nazi's, maar veel wel en veel waren blij met de annexatie, omdat ze nu geen minderheid meer zouden zijn die zich aan moet passen. Toen in 1947, twee jaar na het einde van WOII, de VN opriep tot het delen van Palestina in twee staten, vielen de Arabieren in Palestina de Joodse gemeenschap aan, en na de uitroeping van de staat Israel vielen vier Arabische legers binnen. Daar waren de Palestijnen natuurlijk wel blij mee (sterker nog, ze hadden erom gesmeekt), en die hadden ook geen probleem met de expliciete boodschap dat men de Joden wilden verdrijven of erger (sterker nog, dat riepen ze zelf ook steeds).  Ze verloren, zoals de nazi's verloren (waarmee veel Palestijnen overigens sympathiseerden), en werden in meerderheid verdreven, zoals de Sudetenduitsers werden verdreven. Met dit verschil dat de Palestijnen actief hadden gevochten tegen de Joden in Palestina, en bovendien een meerderheid niet werd verdreven maar zelf vluchtte en daar soms ook toe werd opgeroepen door de Arabieren. In beide gevallen echter hebben onschuldige mensen geleden onder de beslissingen van hun eigen leiders, onder de verkeerde keuzes die zij hebben gemaakt of die namens hen zijn gemaakt. Er zijn overigens nog meer voorbeelden van grote groepen vluchtelingen n.a.v. een conflict, die nooit hebben kunnen terugkeren, zoals de ik meen negen miljoen moslims en hindoes toen Pakistan werd gesticht. Het zogenaamde Palestijnse recht op terugkeer zou 1948 ofwel de stichting van Israel ongedaan maken, en daarmee nog drastischer zijn dan wanneer Duitsland Sudetenland er opnieuw bij zou krijgen.

Er zijn van die plekken in Europa waar het drama van de moderne geschiedenis aan de aarde, het gras en de bomen kleeft. Zoals iedereen de schaduw van de oorlog nog terug kan vinden in akkers rond Ieper en Verdun. Het westen van Tsjechië is zo'n plek.  

 

 

Ik liep gisteren met m'n linkerbeen in Tsjechië en m'n rechter in Duitsland, precies daar waar ooit het IJzeren Gordijn hing. Dat generaties voor mij onder die grens hadden geleden wilde het bos niet meteen verraden. Maar even landinwaarts aan de Tsjechische kant liggen nog altijd de uitgeschoten boomgaarden en vervallen kavels van de Sudeten-Duitse bewoners die daar na de oorlog van werden verdreven. Als lieflijke oases van vervlogen leed. 

 

Want na 300.000 vermoordde en verdreven Joden en een kapotgeschoten land, bleken de Tsjechen weinig compassie te hebben voor de drie miljoen etnische Duitsers binnen hun landsgrenzen. Die hadden immers staan juichen toen Hitler in 1938 hun Sudetenland annexeerde. En dus konden ze na afloop van de oorlog allemaal vertrekken. 240.000 vonden tijdens wraakacties en de vlucht die daarop volgde de dood. 

 

De Nederlandse boer bij wie ik een stukje van mijn zomer doorbreng heeft er garen bij gesponnen. In de verwarrende nadagen na de val van het IJzeren Gordijn sprak Václac Havel nog over de mogelijkheid tot compensatie voor de berooide Sudeten-Duitse ballingen, in ruil voor aanname van het Tsjechisch staatsburgerschap. Hij was de eerste die het voor hen opnam. Maar het voornemen werd nooit uitgevoerd, en land dat niet alsnog werd opgeëist belandde in nieuwe handen. Zo ook in die van mijn Nederlandse gastgevers. 

 

De frustratie over dat alles is tot ver over de Tsjechische grens en die van de eeuwwisseling hoorbaar gebleven. De Sudeten-Duitse verenigingen in Duitsland en Oostenrijk eisen nog altijd gerechtigheid, maar de enigen die luisteren zijn hun eigen leden. 

 

En zo is een dramatisch stukje Europese geschiedenis onder Tsjechische zoden verdwenen. Met nog hier en daar de uitschieter van een ongesnoeide appelboom – toevallig op het verkeerde stukje grond tot wasdom gekomen.

 

 

Antisemitisme in Noord-Europa: Behind the Humanitarian Mask

 

Onder redactie van Manfred Gerstenfeld verscheen in 2008 een bundel over antisemitisme in de Scandinavische landen en Finland.

 

Noorwegen is actueel n.a.v. de recente tragische gebeurtenissen (lees: terreuraanslag). Hoewel de terrorist in de eerste plaats een "islamofoob" en "Euro-nationalist" was, zijn door links en rechts verbanden gelegd met Israel en antisemitisme, omdat hij een pro-zionistische positie innam en de deelnemers van het zomerkamp en hun partij sterk anti-Israel zijn. Zo werden op het eiland acties voorbereid voor een boycot van Israel, en blijken jarenlang ook jeugdleden van de Palestijnse Fatah beweging aan de kampen te hebben deelgenomen.

 

Het motief van de terrorist lijkt echter gelegen in de in zijn ogen pro-islamitische opstelling van de Noorse sociaaldemocraten en hun vermeende steun voor grootschalige moslim-immigratie.

Summary

In the past decades many pioneering efforts to demonize Israel have come from elites of the Nordic countries. The motifs of this anti-Israelism are similar to those of classic anti-Semitism, of which it is a new mutation. Such highly discriminatory prejudices are in particular expressed in Norway and Sweden by leading socialist and extreme-leftist politicians as well as journalists, clergy and so-called humanitarians.
Behind the Nordic countries' appearance and oft-proclaimed concern for human rights lurk darker attitudes. This book deals mainly with lifting the humanitarian mask as far as Israel and Jews are concerned. This disguise hides many ugly characteristics such as false morality, a pretense of superiority, as well as profound humanitarian racism.
The best-known Swedish statesman of the postwar period, Olof Palme was one of Europe's first prominent Holocaust inverters. He was at the origin of the permeation of anti-Israelism in segments of the Social Democrats, Sweden's classic government party.
In recent years major anti-Semitic incidents have taken place in Norway even though there are very few Jews there. The country is a European leader of anti-Semitic cartoons, sometimes similar to Nazi ones. Norway is one of the very few countries that forbids Jewish ritual slaughter. At the same time, it is one of only three countries in the world that permit the cruel killing of whales.
In this book, thirteen essays and interviews discuss various aspects of the attitudes of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland toward Israel and the Jews.

The fight against anti-Semitism is still necessary. That is the conclusion I have had to draw as the Personal Representative of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) Chairman-in-Office on Combating Antisemitism. One of the central problems is the psychological and rhetorical entanglement of criticism of the State of Israel with anti-Semitism. Analyses show that the projection of anti-Israeli sentiments onto Jewish communities is a widespread pattern throughout Europe.
This book deals specifically with anti-Israeli, and sometimes anti-Semitic occurrences within the political and societal discourse in the so-called Nordic countries in Europe. The case studies presented here take a closer look at such phenomena as officials evaluating Israeli policies from a standpoint of moral superiority, strongly biased news reporting on the Middle East conflict, the failure to adequately protect Israeli institutions, the reluctance to put war criminals on trial, and so on. The incidents and patterns discussed here should be regarded as serious. It is the merit of this volume to put the spotlight on underreported phenomena that occur too close to what we see as our consensual political discourse for them to be ignored or trivialized.
