In Israel is er een campagne van een groep die zich het Geneefse Initiatief noemt, naar het gelijknamige vredesplan dat in 2004 is opgesteld door politici uit de oppositie in Israel en de Palestijnse Autoriteit. In de filmpjes van deze groep spreken Palestijnse leiders het Israelische publiek toe en en vragen hen om hun vertrouwen. Uit de Jerusalem Post:

 

The Geneva Initiative unveiled a campaign partially funded by the USAID in which Palestinian leaders speak to the Israeli public in video clips, telling Israelis that there is a Palestinian partner for an agreement.

Thus far, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the PLO Executive Committee Yasser Abed Rabbo and Fatah Central Committee member Jibril Rajoub have recorded short messages, all of which begin with a personal address to the Israeli public which includes the word "shalom" in Hebrew and conclude with "I am your partner. Are you my partner?"

Gadi Baltiansky, Geneva Initiative Israel director, explained that the campaign aims to counter the myth that there is no partner on the Palestinian side and to stir a debate as to whether the Netanyahu administration represents a partner for a two-state solution.

 

Dat betekent dat de GI niet alleen tot vrede oproept, maar ook een politiek standpunt inneemt wat betreft welke partij vrede wil en welke niet. Andere uitspraken van GI zijn nog explicieter. Het is verder opvallend dat men wel zulke advertenties in Israel heeft, maar niet in de Palestijnse gebieden. Elder of Ziyon hekelt de hypocrisie van deze campagne en haar eenzijdigheid en heeft een tegenvideo gemaakt. De uitspraken zijn werkelijk gedaan door Erekat, en hier geeft hij meer voorbeelden van leugens van deze man. Een en ander wil wat mij betreft niet zeggen dat de vredesbesprekingen een slecht idee zijn, wel dat de campagne van GI eenzijdig en misleidend is en er een gigantische taak ligt om juist het Palestijnse publiek ervan te overtuigen dat vrede mogelijk en wenselijk is en er een partner aan de andere kant is.

Over the past few days, Israelis have been inundated with a slick advertising campaign, financed by the US and created by the left wing "Geneva Initiative," to convince them that the current government does not want peace and that Palestinian Arabs do.

Here is my take on one of the commercials, starring everyone's favorite liar, Saeb Erekat.

 

Israel bereidt zich voor op nog groter konvooi naar Gazastrook

 

Ik heb weinig goede woorden over voor de aktivisten die weer een vloot naar Gaza willen leiden om de blokkade van de door Hamas bestuurde Gazastrook te doorbreken. Het lijkt hen geheel niet te interesseren dat ze daarmee de moslimextremisten in de kaart spelen tegen wie de Israelische blokkade is gericht. Door de blokkade ligt de economie van Gaza vrijwel op haar gat en moeten veel inwoners rondkomen van het bestaansminimum of nog minder, maar er zijn tal van gebieden in de wereld waar honger wordt geleden en mensen omkomen in ellende, en Gaza hoort daar niet bij. De burgers van de Gazastrook zuchten minstens zozeer onder de door hen democratisch gekozen 'islamitische verzetsbeweging' Hamas als onder de blokkade, maar de 'Free Gaza' aktivisten zullen deze fanatische terreurgroep die alle Joden de zee in wil drijven en vrouwen wil verbieden op een brommer te rijden (om maar iets te noemen) straks weer vriendelijk de hand schudden en met hen op de foto gaan.

Israel gearing up for 'mother of all flotillas'

NGOs planning to sail up to 20 ships to Gaza in coming months; IDF closely tracking planned flotilla, preparing for wide-range of scenarios.

Israel is preparing for what is being described in the IDF as the "mother of all flotillas," which could include up to 20 different ships planning to set sail for the Gaza Strip in the coming months.

The flotilla is being organized by a coalition of NGOs from Europe and the United States, including a group calling itself European Jews for a Just Peace.

"We hope to have a broad coalition from European countries, and also maybe the United States," Dror Feiler, an Israeli-Swedish musician and artist who lives in Stockholm – and one of the organizers behind the flotilla – told The Jerusalem Post on Monday. "We would like it to be double the size of the last flotilla, with at least a dozen ships and more than thousand people."

The IDF is closely tracking the planned flotilla and is preparing for a wide-range of scenarios, including the possibility that due the large number of ships, it will need to stop the flotilla far from Israel's shores. Feiler said the large number of ships was due to the unprecedented number of people who wanted to sail to Gaza.

"The Israeli army can stop 12 or 50 ships if it wants," he said. "There are so many ships since so many people want to get together to stop the siege, which is a collective punishment of the people of Gaza and is unacceptable."

The last flotilla to Gaza was stopped by the navy at the end of May. During the operation, nine Turkish passengers aboard the Mavi Marmara passenger ship were killed in clashes with commandos from the navy's Flotilla 13.

The coalition behind the new blockade-busting effort includes the Turkish IHH and the Free Gaza Movement, both of which were involved in the May flotilla. It is demanding "an immediate and complete lifting of the closure, including a lifting of the travel ban as well as the ban on exports from Gaza."

Simulatie van vredesonderhandelingen tussen Israel en Palestijnen

 

De Council for Security and Peace, die medewerking verleende aan ondergenoemde simulatie-onderhandelingen, is een goede organisatie. De vele erbij betrokken Israelische deskundigen, waaronder oudgedienden op veiligheidsgebied, maken het tot een (particulier) adviesorgaan dat door de Israelische regering serieus wordt genomen en geregeld om advies wordt gevraagd, al wordt dat advies helaas niet altijd gevolgd. Zoals ook uit hun website blijkt, staan ze zeker niet kritiekloos tegenover het regeringsbeleid. We hebben de in november vorig jaar overleden Joe Jaffe een paar jaar terug opgezocht in zijn woning aan de haven van Jaffa, en hij liet zich behoorlijk kritisch uit over onder meer de route van de afscheidingsbarriere en de checkpoints op de Westelijke Jordaanoever.

 

Het wederzijdse wantrouwen waar de simulatie tegenaan liep, wordt mede gevoed door de voortdurende Palestijnse opruiing en verering van terorristen en de hardnekkige weigering Israel als Joodse staat te erkennen, alsmede het vasthouden aan het 'onvervreemdbare recht op terugkeer van de Palestijnse vluchtelingen', terwijl de Palestijnen zich op hun beurt kunnen afvragen waarom Israel zo graag wil doorbouwen in nederzettingen die het grotendeels bereid zou zijn te ontruimen bij een vredesakkoord. Dat lijkt op kapitaalvernietiging, alleen om de druk op de Palestijnen te houden in de onderhandelingen?

Simulators try to gauge peace talks

Role-playing ex-generals agree Obama is key.

How will the talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, slated to kick off at a festive summit in Washington on Wednesday, end?

If a simulation game played on Sunday by a group of former IDF brass is any guide, the chances for success are not great and the key ultimately rests in the hands of one man – US President Barack Obama.


The Jerusalem Post convened on Sunday a group of former top IDF officers currently affiliated with the Council for Security and Peace, an association of national security experts, to play the roles of key players in the peace process and examine what the chances are for success or failure.

Brig.-Gen. (res.) Shlomo Brom, a former deputy head of the National Security Council, played the role of Obama; the council president, Maj.-Gen. (res.) Nati Sharoni, played Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu; retired Col. Shaul Arieli, head of the peace administration (its mandate was to produce working papers on permanent-status issues and act as something of a database for the negotiators) under Ehud Barak during the Camp David talks in 2000, played the role of PA President Mahmoud Abbas; and Brig.- Gen. (res.) Gadi Zohar, former head of the IDF's civil administration in the West Bank, played the Arab world, primarily Egypt and Jordan, whose leaders will be present at Wednesday's summit.

The two main conclusions from the simulation were first, that the level of mistrust between Israel and the PA is deep and profound, serving as an obstacle in and of itself without even considering the domestic political challenges each side faces.

Second, the player with the most influence on the outcome of the talks is the United States, which will need to decide, sooner rather than later, how aggressive it wants to be in keeping the sides at the negotiating table and enforcing a peace treaty.

Each player framed his strategies realistically. Obama, according to Brom, is bringing the sides together in an effort to reach an agreement for two primary reasons: first, since in his world view the Israel- PA conflict has a "negative effect on overall stability in the Middle East, from Morocco to Afghanistan" and second as a way to increase the chance of a Democratic victory at the polls in November.

The obstacles to the success of the talks were presented to all of the sides: what Israel will decide regarding the pending expiration of the freeze on settlement construction; Hamas's potential destabilizing role in Gaza; and Iran's reaction to success, including the possibility that it will advance with its nuclear program and put Israel before a difficult decision – either attack Iran and knowingly torpedo the talks or continue the talks and allow Iran to go nuclear.

Obama will demand as early as their meeting on Wednesday, according to Brom, that Netanyahu extend the freeze on construction in the West Bank.

Sharoni, a former head of the IDF Planning Branch, who was playing Israel, said that Netanyahu was likely to agree to a continuation of the freeze within the isolated settlements but to lift it within the settlement blocs, in places like Ma'aleh Adumim and Gush Etzion.

A continuation of the talks, Netanyahu will also likely argue, will enable him to make greater concessions and minimize domestic political risks that could affect his coalition.

The PA and Abbas – played by Arieli – said they would not accept any continuation of building, even within the settlement blocs or east Jerusalem.

"This is not something we will be able to live with," he said.

As for the crisis that will come up as early as September 26, when the freeze ends, all sides looked to the US for direction.

Brom, playing Obama, stepped up to the task and did his best to convince Abbas to stay at the negotiation table, pointing out that the US's original moratorium proposal was for Israel to freeze construction only in isolated settlements and not in the blocs. Netanyahu was the one who had rejected this idea, not wanting to seemingly make a distinction at the time between types of settlements.

In addition, Obama will be able to promise Abbas that he will firstly hold Netanyahu to a strict timetable for the talks – around a year – and will also, if the talks falter, be prepared to make his own recommendations and proposals to solve disagreements that will naturally be closer to the Palestinian position.

"We will promise real US involvement, including proposing ideas how to bridge gaps," Obama will say.

Even with such aggressive US intervention in the talks, it is not clear that Abbas will be able to deliver, due to his weak political standing in the PA. Last week, for example, Abbas failed to convene the PLO executive committee and has weak support within his own Fatah party. As a result, part of Abbas's strategy, as presented by Arieli, will be to show Netanyahu's true face as the side unwilling to abide by international agreements and guidelines, and then call upon the UN Security Council to take up the Israel- Palestinian issue.

Assuming the sides are able to overcome the moratorium obstacle, other challenges that awaits them are the right of return, Jerusalem, final borders and of course, the Gaza Strip and Hamas's control over the territory.

Regarding Gaza, Egypt and Jordan, played by Zohar, both expressed willingness to accept a recommendation made by the US player and establish a pan-Arab military force that will deploy in Gaza and the West Bank to firstly provide Israel with a sense of security and secondly to enforce PA rule in the territories.

"This is possible for Egypt if we receive assurances that Gaza will not become part of Egypt," Zohar said in his role as President Hosni Mubarak.

Hamas, however, will not agree to such a deployment and will challenge the force, understanding that it could lead to the end of its rule over Gaza. At the same time, though, Hamas will be reluctant to launch a large-scale offensive against Israel, so as not to be blamed for derailing the talks by forcing Israel's hand.

Iran will likely behave the same way, but could decide to activate its proxies – Hizbullah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza – if it feels that a deal is in the works that would strengthen the Sunni and moderate alliance that it is challenging for regional dominance.

Netanyahu could also find himself in a dilemma if intelligence assessments change and indicate that Iran has gone for the breakout stage and is enriching uranium to military-grade levels.

Will he order an attack against Iran's nuclear facilities, which will likely lead to a collapse in talks, or will he continue talking and count on the US to deal with Iran, as Obama has assured Israel it will do? Neither player could provide a clear answer as to what Netanyahu would do in such a case.

An observer would have dully noted that the simulation could have carried on for hours, as each member of the council played his role impressively, at times even using rhetoric similar to that used by the leaders scheduled to meet in Washington on Wednesday.

Ultimately, however, the question of sincerity is something that cannot be simulated. Questions such as "Has Netanyahu crossed the Rubicon?" and "Is Abbas capable of implementing a deal?" could not be easily answered by the players.

With talks scheduled to begin Wednesday, the answers will likely be provided soon.

Een extreem geval van media bias: tien jaar geleden stond deze foto op de voorpagina van de New York Times, met als onderschrift: een Israelische politieman en Palestijn op de Tempelberg. De implicatie is overduidelijk dat de politieman de Palestijn zo heeft toegetakeld. De foto is echter een uitsnede van dit beeld, en de 'Palestijn' is een Joodse Amerikaan die door een Palestijnse menigte was belaagd en richting een groepje Israelische politieagenten vluchtte. Zo simpel werkt media manipulatie, en zo sterk gekleurd denken veel journalisten, dat ze voetstoots aannemen bij het zien van een dergelijk beeld dat de dader wel een Israeli zal zijn en het slachtoffer een Palestijn. Dat is niet veranderd, en we hebben meer foto's gezien waarin is geknoeid of bewust een verkeerd beeld wordt gegeven, zoals tijdens de tweede Libanon oorlog en het Gaza vloot incident.

On September 30, 2000, The New York Times, Associated Press and other major media outlets published a photo of a young man -- bloodied and battered -- crouching beneath a club-wielding Israeli policeman. The caption identified him as a Palestinian victim of Israeli brutality -- with the clear implication that the Israeli soldier was the one who beat him.

That young man was, in fact, Tuvia Grossman, a Jewish student from Chicago, who was beaten within inches of his life before being rescued by the Israeli border policeman in the photo.

The resulting outrage generated by the gross distortion of the photo "launched" HonestReporting.

Now, ten years later, we caught up with Tuvia in an exclusive interview.

HonestReporting: How have things changed for you since your picture appeared in the NY Times?

Tuvia Grossman: Ten years ago, I was a single American 20-year old, in Israel temporarily as a student. Today, I am nearly 30, married, have a beautiful nearly three-year-old daughter, a practicing attorney at a corporate law firm in Tel Aviv and a proud citizen of Israel.

While the memories of 10 years ago haven't faded, it's often difficult to picture myself in the state I was in. I remember feeling mixed emotions of anger, fear and hopelessness. The misrepresentation of my story in the global news exacerbated my feelings.

However, I am proud to say I have overcome many of those feelings, and, in a way, won the battle the terrorists started. By settling in Israel, raising a family, advancing my career and becoming the person they tried to destroy, I beat the terrorists simply by being alive.

HR: What was your reaction when you heard about the NY Times caption?

TG: The truth is I was not very surprised at all. This was not my first encounter with media bias. I had always been an avid reader, even before my attack, and had come across many instances of blatant bias against Israel.

When hearing about the picture, my initial thoughts went to the soldier. It's much worse to be accused of beating the person you actually helped protect, than to be accused of being a Palestinian when you are in fact a Jew.

HR: Did you try to find the soldier in the picture?

TG: No. First, there were five or six soldiers stationed at the gas station I ran to as I was being pursued by the Arabs. One particular soldier happened to be standing behind me when the picture was taken; however, I owe my gratitude to all the soldiers equally, to the one in the picture, as well as to the less famous ones not photographed -- such as the soldier who ripped off his uniform and tied it around my head to stop the bleeding.

I have also been reluctant to find the soldier from the picture precisely because of the misrepresentation. What do you say to someone who helped save your life, but was portrayed across the globe as a vicious animal?

HR: Your ordeal has inspired groups like HR to fight media bias against Israel. Has coverage of Israel improved in the past ten years?

TG: Media bias against Israel is as strong as ever.

However, public awareness to such bias has increased exponentially, which is the first and most crucial step to stop the actual bias. Organizations like HonestReporting may not be able to force media outlets across the globe to reflect the unbiased truth, but they have been very successful in raising awareness.

Eerste avocado's uit Israël deze week bij Verdi Import

Tholen - Deze week start het Israëlische avocadoseizoen. Verdi Import krijgt 9 september de eerste verlading binnen. De oogst is dit jaar naar verwachting groot waardoor de maten wat kleiner uitvallen dan vorig seizoen. Het grootste gedeelte van de oogst groeit in het hogere Galilea, waar de klimatologische omstandigheden ideaal zijn voor de avocadoteelt.

Verdi ontvangt eerst avocado's van de variëteit Tig, waarna begin oktober de Ettinger avocado's worden verwacht. Vanaf week 50 zal de variëteit Pinkerton worden aangevoerd die tot week 7 in het nieuwe jaar beschikbaar zullen zijn.

Voor Verdi Import is de avocado uit Israël een nieuw item. "Het product past goed bij het huidige assortiment en mede door het nieuwe partnership met Kedem Hadarim hebben we prima verwachtingen voor het komende seizoen", aldus Jacob Visser van Verdi Import.

Palestijnse ambassadeur in Iran Zawawi wil strijd tegen 'zionistisch regime' voortzetten

 

De Palestijnse ambassadeur in Iran heeft op 'Al Quds day' gezegd dat de gewapende strijd met de 'zionistische bezetters' zal doorgaan totdat Jeruzalem is bevrijd. Hij had meer fraais voor Israel in petto, waarmee zijn regering sinds kort weer directe vredesbesprekingen voert:

'Late Imam Khomeini expelled the representatives of the Zionist regime from Iran, cut export of oil to the (then) apartheid regime of South Africa and established the first-ever Palestine Embassy on ruins of Israeli embassy in Tehran.'

The ambassador said that the Zionist regime will be annihilated if it fails to win support of big powers.

He said that the Zionist regime was established by western powers to harm unity of the Arab nations and the world Muslims to help materialize their sinister goals.

'As our struggles with the Zionists will get tougher in the future, we hope more support from the Islamic Ummah,' he said.

On Iran's peaceful nuclear activities, he said the Western countries have toughen sanctions against Iran but have ignored the Zionist regime which possesses over 200 warheads and advanced military apparatus such as F-35.

"With reliance upon Grace of Almighty God and through solidarity of world Muslims, we hope to witness complete eradication of the fabricated regime in due course," Zawawi said.

 

Palestijnse gevangene haalt zijn PhD in Israelische cel

Van het leven in een Israelische gevangenis worden Palestijnen niet dommer. Ze leren er niet alleen Hebreeuws, maar vormen vaak ook een soort commitees die met de leiding van de gevangenissen over zaken die hen aangaan onderhandelen, en kunnen er studeren. We hadden op deze blog ooit een bericht dat sommige Palestijnen zich expres lieten oppakken om ongestoord te kunnen studeren in de gevangenis. Nee, de gevangenis is geen luxe hotel waar het de gevangenen aan niets ontbreekt. Maar men heeft er de middelen om te studeren, om invloed te blijven uitoefenen op de Palestijnse politiek (Barghouti) en zelfs om aanslagen voor te bereiden.

Gilad Shalit daarentegen, meer dan vier jaar geleden ontvoerd door Hamas, heeft geen enkel contact met de buitenwereld en mag tegen de internationale afspraken in geen bezoek ontvangen van het Rode Kruis. Het is onduidelijk in wat voor conditie hij verkeert en hoe hij wordt behandeld, en of hij nog daglicht heeft gezien sinds zijn ontvoering.

Prisoner awarded PhD in jail

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian prisoner held in the Negev prison was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Administration from the American World University, the Center for Detainees' Studies announced Sunday.

Abdel Hafez Saadi Gaithan's doctoral thesis was entitled Strategic Planning in Qabilia, a Palestinian village in the northern West Bank district of Nablus, a statement issued by the center's director Rafat Hamdouna said.

Hamdouna said prisoners celebrated Gaithan's success by distributing sweets, biscuits and soft drinks, with many describing his achievement as "a victory over the occupation."

"[Gaithan's] Phd was a challenge to break the policy of occupation, which attempts to abuse the captive and isolate him from the world," the statement read.

The PhD was awarded to Gaithan by AWU in conjunction with Birzeit University.
 

Palestijnse journalisten afhankelijk van Israelische media voor nieuws vredesoverleg

 

De meeste Palestijnse kranten zijn niet onafhankelijk, maar worden betaald door de PA die ook hun politieke lijn bepaalt en de redactie benoemt. Deze kranten worden zelfs door het eigen PA leiderschap niet erg serieus genomen, zo blijkt, dat liever met Israelische en pan-Arabische media praat dan met de Palestijnse.

Onafhankelijke, kritische en goed geinfomeerde media zijn een belangrijk en noodzakelijk onderdeel van een democratie.

'PA journalists depend on Israeli media'

PA media did not have enough information on the launch of direct talks in Washington; Palestinian officials preferred to talk to Israeli and Western reporters.

Israeli journalists are more informed about developments in the Palestinian territories than their Palestinian colleagues, Abdel Naser Najjar, chairman of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate in the West Bank, said over the weekend.

Palestinian Authority officials have always preferred to talk to the Israeli and foreign media, Najjar complained.

The PA media were forced to rely heavily on Israeli reporting of last week's ceremony to launch direct talks in Washington. Some Palestinian editors said that PA officials who traveled to Washington preferred to talk to Israeli and Western journalists, as well as to popular pan-Arab TV channels such as Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya.

"Palestinian officials must start providing the Palestinian media with information and news scoops," Najjar said. "They must have confidence in the Palestinian media."

The Palestinian officials believed that dealing with Israeli and foreign media would bring more exposure, he said. "The Israeli media have more sources among Palestinians than the local Palestinian media. We hope this situation will change and Palestinian journalists will be the first to publish scoops."

The journalists syndicate in the West Bank is dominated by Fatah loyalists who refrain from reporting anything that may anger the PA leadership or reflect negatively on it.

Two of the three main Palestinian newspapers – Al-Hayat al-Jadida and Al-Ayyam – are directly funded by the PA, which also appoints reporters and editors.

Al-Quds, the only privately-owned newspaper, has become over the years a semi-official publication reflecting the views of the PA leadership.

Van Arafat was bekend dat hij in het Arabisch andere dingen zei als in het Engels, en terroristische aanslagen veroordeelde terwijl hij de bomgordels voor ze betaalde. Ook werden ze in door de PA gecontroleerde media als helden geportretteerd. Van Abbas is dit minder bekend, maar hij doet, zij het minder extreem, hetzelfde. Terwijl men aanslagen officieel veroordeelt, gingen Abbas en Fayyad onlangs naar de begrafenis van een van de planners van de aanslag in Munchen in 1972. De aanslag was uitgevoerd door de 'Black September' dat nauw gelieerd was aan Fatah. Fatah heeft nooit afstand genomen van haar terroristische verleden, dat niet eens echt 'verleden' genoemd kan worden. De planners en uitvoerders van de aanslagen die men officieel zegt te veroordelen, worden als helden van het Palestijnse volk geëerd, krijgen prijzen, van alles wordt naar ze vernoemd, en ze worden consequent als rolmodel neergezet voor de jeugd. Vandaar dat nogal wat mensen, ook zij die voor een tweestatenoplossing en tegen de bezetting van de Westoever zijn, nogal sceptisch zijn over de hervatte vredesbesprekingen tussen Israel en de regering onder leiding van president Abbas. Abbas geldt in het Westen als gematigd, maar daar kun je nogal wat vraagtekens bij zetten.

As I wrote previously, I have no desire to rain on the Israeli-Palestinian "peace" parade. We must all hope against all rationality that the negotiations in Washington will end the seemingly eternal state of belligerence of the entire Arab world against Israel, no matter what the cost in territory.

But Tuesday night's terror attack cannot be set aside or spun away. It has a profound significance. Not surprisingly, it is therefore being studiously ignored by fashionable opinion-makers. In the Huffington Post, Israel Policy Forum's Peter Joseph was ecstatic about the prospects for peace. Writing after the attack, he gushed:

...violence is down because security cooperation between Israel and the Palestinians is at an all-time high.... With such cooperation already in place, these talks will have a distinct advantage over all other previous efforts.

The Hebron area attack of Tuesday night is very dangerous to "peace." It demonstrates at the very least that Mr. Abbas's Palestinian Authority "government" has no authority a few kilometers from Ramallah, and certainly not in Gaza. Therefore, the attack has become a non-event. It never happened. Histories of this round of negotiations will omit that terror attack,

More ominously, the earlier report that the Al Aqsa Martyrs brigades of "moderate" Fatah claimed responsibility for the attack has simply vanished. It is a non-datum. If it is not found anywhere, it never happened, right? Here it is again, so that if it wiped off the Web everywhere else, it will still remain in at least this one place:

Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, Fatah's military wing, claimed responsibility for the West Bank shooting attack that killed four Israelis on Tuesday.

Fatah and Palestinian Authority senior officials estimated that the declaration was meant to cover for the true perpetrators and mainly embarrass Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as Fatah's leader. An additional group known as al-Haq also claimed responsibility for the attack. (Ali Waked)

There is an explanation, you see. The Palestinian Authority officials "estimated that the declaration of their own organization was a fake intended to embarrass them!" How very clever! It must be another "Zionist" plot. How entangled in wishful thinking about "peace" does one have to be to believe that transparent lie?

Of course, the attack has been roundly (and routinely) condemned by the Palestinian Authority (PA). But dare I suggest that these condemnations have less sincerity behind them than one might think? Before you explode with self-righteous anger at this ''right wing" "propaganda," remember how the PLO, father of the Palestinian Authority, dissociated itself from the Munich Olympics terror attacks and the Black September movement that took "credit" for them. The Palestinian Authority and the PLO have a long history of denying, and later admitting, culpability or taking "credit" for terror attacks.

Recently, officials of the Palestinian Authority mounted and attended the state funeral of Amin el Hindi one of the planners of the Munich attack. Al-Hayat al-Jadida, the official PA daily, noted that al-Hindi was "one of the stars who sparkled... at the sports stadium in Munich..." Attending the funeral were the "moderate" Salem Fayyad and the "moderate" Mahmoud Abbas, who sang the praises of al-Hindi. Abbas himself has been accused of masterminding the finances of the Black September movement that "took credit" for the Munich Olympics massacre.

"Black September," was a fiction, like the Fatah al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades that took "credit" for Tuesday's cold-blooded massacre in their conveniently forgotten statement. The al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades were invented as an address for the terror organized by the Palestinian Authority in anticipation of their sabotage of the 2000 peace talks. The Black September Movement was a fiction of the 70's.

The known leaders of "Black September" were Salah Khalef ("abu Iyad") who was Yasser Arafat's chief of security, Mohammad Daoud Oudeh (abu Daoud) and Amin el Hindi. They were all key members of the PLO and Fatah. Abu Daoud and Amin el Hindi died recently and were suitably honored by the Palestinian Authority.

In 1999, the Palestinian Prize for Culture was granted to abu Daoud for his book Palestine: From Jerusalem to Munich, in which he describes how he planned and executed the Munich terror attack. Abu Daoud was awarded 10,000 French Francs by the Palestinian Authority for this masterpiece. In the same book, abu Daoud admitted that "Black September" was a front for the PLO and the Fatah. But he, as well as abu Iyad, had admitted all this previously, in the 70's.

In his book Stateless, Salah Khalaf (abu Iyad) a founding member of Fatah, wrote that,"Black September was not a terrorist organization, but was rather an auxiliary unit of the resistance movement, at a time when the latter was unable to fully realize its military and political potential. The members of the organization always denied any ties between their organization and Fatah or the PLO."

Abu Daoud went further. He told Jordanian police: "There is no such organization as Black September. Fatah announces its own operations under this name so that Fatah will not appear as the direct executor of the operation." A March 1973 U.S. State Department document seemed to confirm the Fateh -Black September link.( source).

The U.S. document was released only in 1981. It also implicates the Fatah and the PLO in the Khartoum massacre of U.S. diplomats. The U.S. knows, and has known for a long time, the nature of the PLO and the Fatah.

In a condolence letter to Daoud's family following his death, the "moderate" Mahmoud Abbas wrote, "He is missed. He was one of the leading figures of Fatah and spent his life in resistance and sincere work as well as physical sacrifice for his people's just causes."

The PLO and PA have always invented ghost organizations that could be blamed for terror attacks. But Tuesday's attack did not require the invention of a Black September fiction. It was not even necessary to resuscitate the transparent fiction of the "al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades," though the quickly scuttled statement indicates that such a revival was contemplated and discarded.

There is no longer a need to invent "dissident factions." The "moderate" Palestinian Authority now has a very convenient villain in the form of the Hamas, a group that can be blamed for every manifestation of violence and extremism, leaving the PA pure as the driven snow in the eyes of all who want to believe.

But is Hamas really the all-culpable arch-fiend? Who is behind the boycott initiatives? The Hamas? Are you sure? Who has been threatening those who have any contact with Israelis? Not the Hamas, but rather the PACBI, which is located in the land of the "moderate" Palestinian Authority, not the Hamas, surely, but officials of the Fateh and of the Palestinian Authority. Nobody else has the power to strike terror in the hearts of the West Bank residents and organizations. No Hamas organization exists in the West Bank. There is nobody to scare people, and nobody to carry out terror attacks. Only the PA, the Fatah and the organizations they permit could exist in the West Bank.

Can anyone believe that anything happens in the West Bank without the knowledge of the Palestinian Authority?

Can anyone believe that the "Fatah al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades" took "credit" for the terror attack "by accident," without the knowledge and approval of the head of the Fatah himself, namely the very same Mahmoud Abbas, who is also chairman of the Palestinian Authority? This then, is Israel's peace partner.

Can anyone really believe that the Fatah al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades took "credit" for the terror attack in order to embarrass their bosses, and if this is really true, what does it say about the chaotic nature of the state that the Palestinians are supposed to be building?

Surely all right-thinking people want peace, and share President Obama's vision of a Palestinian state living in peace, side by side with Israel.

But no decent person can stand by silently as the foundations are laid for a nightmare Palestinian terror state founded on deniability. A Palestinian state that will use its state apparatus, international recognition and resources to delegitimize Israel. A state that will allow fanatics to murder innocents and explode themselves in the public places of Israel. A Palestinian state that fools whoever wants to be fooled by enacting a farcical melodrama on the theme of "good cop - bad cop," staged with mythical villains of its own invention. That Palestinian state will not bring us peace, nor will it end the miserable epic of the Palestinian people.

Verschillende groeperingen uit de Gazastrook, waaronder de islamitische terreurgroep Hamas, hebben besloten samen te werken tegen Israël in een poging de donderdag begonnen vredesonderhandelingen te dwarsbomen.

Dat hebben de groepen donderdag bekendgemaakt, meldt de Israëlische krant Ha'aretz. Ze zijn van plan het aantal aanvallen op de Joodse staat te vermeerderen en sluiten daarbij zelfmoordaanslagen niet uit.

Een Hamas-woordvoerder: 'We verklaren dat de verzetsdaden een nieuwe fase van samenwerking zijn ingegaan, ter voorbereiding op effectievere aanvallen tegen de vijand. We houden alle opties open.'

Vernietiging
De verklaring kwam op de dag dat Mahmoud Abbas, leider van de Palestijnse Autoriteit, en de Israëlische premier Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington DC begonnen met directe vredesonderhandelingen, die moeten leiden tot een onafhankelijke Palestijnse staat en een veilig Israël. De gesprekken staan onder leiding van de Amerikaanse president Barack Obama.

Hamas, dat sinds 2007 aan de macht is in de Gazastrook, wil onder geen beding vrede sluiten met Israël. De terreurbeweging streeft zelfs naar vernietiging van de staat.

Oost-Jeruzalem
Woensdagavond dineerde Obama in Washington DC met Abbas, Netanyahu, de Egyptische president Hosni Mubarak en Koning Abdullah II van Jordanië. Ook Clinton en Midden-Oosten-gezant Tony Blair waren aanwezig. 'Ik heb hoop,' sprak Obama voorafgaand aan het etentje, 'voorzichtige hoop, dat we het doel kunnen bereiken waar al deze vier leiders naar streven.'

Een van de moeilijkste issues die de Amerikanen moeten zien te tackelen, is het voortdurende conflict over het betwiste Oost-Jeruzalem. De Palestijnen zien dit als de hoofdstad van hun toekomstige Palestijnse staat, terwijl Netanyahu Oost-Jeruzalem niet wil opgeven.

TEHERAN - De volkeren van het Midden-Oosten kunnen het zionistische regime van het wereldtoneel laten verdwijnen als leiders in de regio dat niet durven. Dit zei de Iraanse president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vrijdag.

Hij deed dat in een rede op de laatste vrijdag van de vastenmaand ramadan, in Iran tevens de Dag van al-Quds (Dag van Jeruzalem), de dag voor solidariteit met het Palestijnse volk.

Ahmadinejad heeft het over Israël, wanneer hij over het zionistische regime spreekt. Hij zei een dag na de start van nieuwe rechtstreekse onderhandelingen tussen Israëli's en Palestijnen onder auspiciën van de Verenigde Staten, dat die onderhandelingen gedoemd zijn te mislukken.

Nasrallah derides peace talks as dead on arrival in "Jerusalem Day" speech after explosions erupt from suspected Hizbullah arms cache.

 

The current round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks will not succeed, Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said during a "Jerusalem Day" commemoration speech on Friday.

Nasrallah characterized the talks as "stillborn" and said, "Jerusalem, and not even one of its streets, can not be the capital of the state called Israel."

The Hizbullah chief's comments came hours after explosions ripped through a building Friday in southern Lebanon that might - according to Lebanese security officials - have been used to store weapons for the terrorists group.

It was not clear whether there were any casualties from the blasts, which set off a large fire, the officials said. Rescue crews responded to the scene.

The three-story building is in the Hizbullah-dominated village of Shehabiyeh, part of a volatile border zone south of the Litani river in which Hizbullah has been banned from having weapons under a UN resolution that ended the 2006 war between the terror group and Israel.

Een paar dagen geleden was er in Zuid-Libanon een explosie in een wapenopslagplaats van Hezbollah, waarbij zeven mensen gewond raakten. De wapens waren opgeslagen in een luxe villa in een dorp, niet op een legerbasis zoals dat hoort.

This increase  may be attributed to the low maintenance level of the weaponry in private homes. It should be emphasized that these buildings are located near civilian houses and other public areas (schools, mosques, hospitals etc).

Third Explosion at Hezbollah Weapons Storage Facility in Southern Lebanon

Earlier today, at around 12:45, an explosion occurred at a known Hezbollah weapons storage facility in Southern Lebanon. This is the third explosion of its kind just this year. Several people were injured in the explosion, possibly members of the Salum family (known to be linked to Hezbollah), which owns the building. The facility is located in a three-story building, several hundred meters away from a mosque.

The building is a luxurious villa owned by a Hezbollah terrorist in one of the neighborhoods of Al- Shahabiya. This emphasizes the use made by Hezbollah of civlians to hide its activity in Southern Lebanon, contradciting UN resolution 1701. The building was known to the IDF as a weapons storage facility.

After the explosion, several trucks and transport vehicles were seen evacuating weapons. Hezbollah militants prevented the arrival of UNIFIL and Lebanese Army Forces to the scene, until the evacuation has ended. The weapons were transferred to other Hezbollah centers in nearby villages.

It should also be noted that following violent clashes between UNIFIL and Hezbollah militants at the end of June, both sides have agreed on limitations regarding UNIFIL activity inside the villages and in certain areas.

The weapons storage facility that exploded today is located in the heart of Hezbollah's operational apparatus in a wealthy Shiite area controlled by the organization. The building adjacent to the facility (from the south-west side) was used as a Hezbollah headquarters building up until the Second Lebanon War, during which it was destroyed.

During the past year, several similar incidents of weapon explosions in South Lebanon took place (some of them haven't been published yet). Europees commissaris De Gucht 'excuseert' zich voor antisemitische uitspraken

 

Het is een 'excuus' van niks (vandaar dat Joods Actueel ook helemaal niet van een excuus spreekt; zie tweede artikel), want hij suggereert dat het probleem slechts de interpretatie van zijn woorden is door Joodse organisaties (die, maar dat zei hij er wijselijk niet bij, natuurlijk overgevoelig reageren op kritiek en overal de Holocaust bijhalen). De Gucht had het niet alleen over de machtige Joodse lobby in Amerika die de vredesbesprekingen zou bemoeilijken, maar beweerde ook dat met Joden niet te praten is over het Midden-Oosten, dat ze onredelijk en irrationeel en gelijkhebberig zouden zijn. Ik begrijp niet echt wat je daar verkeerd aan kunt interpreteren.

 

En wat betreft de krachten die het vredesproces proberen te doen mislukken: laat hij eens kijken naar allerlei Palestijnse groeperingen, Hezbollah en Iran. Zij hebben allen reeds luid van zich doen horen. De meeste Joodse organisaties daarentegen steunen de onderhandelingen en zijn voor vrede en een tweestatenoplossing.

 

Ik ben blij dat ministers in Nederland nog niet zover gaan, al zou oud-minister van buitenlandse zaken Van den Broek in de buurt kunnen komen.

De Gucht excuseert zich voor "antisemitische uitspraken"

14:53 Het Europees Joods Congres (EJC) is kwaad op Europees commissaris voor Handel Karel De Gucht. Die hekelde gisteren in het Radio 1-programma 'De Ochtend' de rol van "de joodse lobby in de Verenigde Staten" in het huidige vredesproces. Het EJC eiste dat de voormalige minister van Buitenlandse Zaken zich excuseerde voor die "antisemitische" uitspraken en die laatste heeft dat inmiddels ook gedaan.

Tijdens het radioprogramma werd er gepeild naar de mening van De Gucht over de gesprekken tussen de Israëlische premier Netanyahu, de Palestijnse president Abbas, de Jordaanse koning Abdullah en de Egyptische president Hosni Moebarak.

De EU-commissaris vertelde dat hij niet overtuigd is van de slaagkansen van de gesprekken. Zelfs met "gematigde joden" is het volgens hem niet mogelijk om een rationeel gesprek te hebben over de toestand in het Midden-Oosten omdat die nog altijd verbonden zijn met Israël. Bovendien zijn joden, "gelovige of vrijzinnige", volgens De Gucht altijd overtuigd van hun eigen gelijk.

"Joodse lobby"

Daarnaast gaf De Gucht zijn mening over de rol van de Verenigde Staten in het vredesproces. "Het siert Obama dat hij het Midden-Oosten al in het begin van zijn eerste ambtstermijn hoog op de agenda zet", zegt de EU-commissaris. "Zijn voorgangers lieten de kwestie telkens liggen tot op het einde van de tweede ambtstermijn."

"Maar onderschat de rol van de joodse lobby op Capitol Hill, het Amerikaanse congres, niet. Dat is de best georganiseerde lobby die daar bestaat en die heeft dus een vat op de Amerikaanse politiek, of dat nu gaat over Republikeinen of Democraten", aldus De Gucht.

"Antisemitische karikaturen aangepast"

Vooral die laatste zin is in het verkeerde keelgat geschoten bij de EJC. In de Jerusalem Post reageert EJC-voorzitter Moshe Kantor erg kwaad. "Dit is een deel van een gevaarlijke aansporende trend tegen joden en Israël in Europa. Die trend moet meteen worden uitgeroeid. De oude antisemitische karikaturen worden aangepast aan de 21e eeuw", zegt hij.

"Voor de zoveelste keer horen we schandalig antisemitisme uit de mond van een belangrijke Europese functionaris komen", gaat Kantor verder. "De joodse macht belasteren wordt blijkbaar aanvaard in de hoogste regionen van de Europese Unie. En op een of andere manier wordt het ook aanvaard dat joden worden aangevallen door kritiek te hebben op Israël. Dit zou iedereen die een tolerant Europa wil moeten verontrusten", aldus de voorzitter van het EJC.

Ook het Forum der Joodse Organisaties in België eiste onmiddelijk excuses van De Gucht voor wat zij "stigmatiserende uitspraken" noemen.

"Geen plaats voor antisemitisme"

De EU-commissaris bood donderdag dan ook meteen zijn verontschuldigingen aan. "Ik wil duidelijk maken dat antisemitisme geen plaats heeft in de wereld van vandaag en dat dat fundamenteel tegen onze Europese waarden is", zei hij.

"De opmerkingen zijn op een manier geïnterpreteerd die ik niet bedoeld heb. Ik had geenszins de bedoeling de Joodse gemeenschap te beledigen of te stigmatiseren", aldus De Gucht.

Karel De Gucht, de Europese Commissaris voor Handel, was gisteren duidelijk niet van plan om enig commentaar te leveren naar aanleiding van zijn  omstreden uitspraken tijdens zijn VRT- radio-optreden  en zei woordelijk tegen onze redactie:  "Doe u geen moeite".

Wij van onze kant doen ons wel de moeite om het persbericht dat de heer De Gucht  vandaag de wereld instuurt hieronder  te plaatsen.

Personal Statement of Karel de Gucht "I gave an interview yesterday to the Flemish radio. I was also asked about the Middle East peace talks. I gave my personal point of view. I regret that the comments that I made have been interpreted in a sense that I did not intend. I did not mean in any possible way to cause offense or stigmatise the Jewish Community. I want to make clear that anti-Semitism has no place in today's world and is fundamentally against our European values."

Volgens onze bronnen  is het op dit ogenblik niet duidelijk of het European Jewish Congress  (EJC) dat  er op aandringt dat De Gucht zijn uitspraken terugtrekt genoegen zal nemen met het feit dat hij verklaart ten persoonlijke titel te spreken terwijl hij voor het VRT-interview  wel degelijk werd geïntroduceerd  als Europees Commissaris van Handel.  Het wordt dus wachten op een reactie van Moshe Kantor, de voorzitter van het EJC.

Een journalist die aan de woordvoerder van De Gucht vroeg hoe een persoonlijke mening van een commissaris racistische trekjes  kan vertonen kreeg daarop een onduidelijk antwoord.  We citeren letterlijk: "Commissioners are foremost politicians. They of course express the view of the Commission and sometimes they also express personal views". "There is a difference between the two". " De Gucht's comments were "personal views".

Het CCOJB (de koepelorganisatie van de Franstalige Joodse verenigingen in België) gaat ook  niet in  op het statement van De Gucht en laat in een communiqué weten dat het aandringt op overleg met het Centrum voor Gelijke Kansen en Racismebestrijding over  "het antisemitische discours " van EU- commissaris  Karel De Gucht.

 

Fatah prominenten tegen vredesonderhandelingen met Israel

 

Niet alleen Hamas, ook Fatah is zeer sceptisch over de onderhandelingen, en belangrijke figuren binnen deze partij uiten openlijk kritiek op Abbas. Daarmee ondermijnen zij zijn toch al niet geweldige aanzien en autoriteit verder, en verkleinen daarmee de kans op succes van de onderhandelingen.

 

Marwan Barghouti, nog altijd in een Israelische gevangenis vanwege het beramen van verschillende aanslagen op Israelische burgers, zei:

 

"The talks won't achieve any results without popular support," he said. "The alternative to the talks should be national reconciliation and popular resistance against the occupation."

 

Die steun van de bevolking verkleint hij echter met zijn uitspraken. Hij kan zich ook juist inzetten om de steun voor de onderhandelingen te vergroten. In plaats daarvan roept hij op tot 'verzet' tegen de bezetting.

 

Mohamed Dahlan, zeer invloedrijk in Fatah, zegt: 

 

"In Fatah, we believe that going to the talks in this way won't lead to any positive results," he said. "All that Abbas can do now is say no to any issue that contradicts the national interests of the Palestinians."

 

Het kenmerk van onderhandelingen is nu juist dat je niet alleen dingen binnenhaalt, maar ook concessies doet. Hij lijkt tegen iedere concessie te zijn, en vindt bovendien dat Abbas nog meer eisen had moeten stellen voordat hij aan de onderhandelingen begon. Er is zoiets als je hand overspelen, en de Palestijnen zijn er erg goed in.

Prominent Fatah figures criticize Abbas for entering into peace talks unconditionally under international pressure.

 

As the direct talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority were launched on Wednesday, two of Fatah's prominent figures have come out against the talks, criticizing PA President Mahmoud Abbas for abandoning his preconditions for entering into negotiations.

Jailed Fatah operative Marwan Barghouti said that the talks were doomed to fail and called on the PA leadership to focus on ending the power struggle with Hamas.

Barghouti was quoted by Reuters as saying that he supported the talks in principle, but was worried because the Palestinians went to Washington under international pressure.

Barghouti said that Abbas was forced to go to the talks because of pressure from the Americans, Europeans and some Arab countries, and not because he believes in the efficiency of the negotiations.

Barghouti also pointed out that Abbas did not have enough backing from the Palestinian population to hold direct talks with Israel.

"The talks won't achieve any results without popular support," he said. "The alternative to the talks should be national reconciliation and popular resistance against the occupation."

Former Fatah security commander Muhammad Dahlan also criticized the PA leadership for going to the talks unconditionally. He said that Abbas also made a mistake by agreeing to go to the talks before receiving assurances from the US administration.

Dahlan said that the Palestinians only received "verbal assurances" from Washington.

He added that under such conditions, the talks would not produce any positive results.

Dahlan accused the US administration of abandoning its role as mediator and becoming "managers of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's PR campaign."

Dahlan also expressed disappointment with some Arab countries for putting pressure on the PA leaders to move from indirect to direct talks with Israel.

"In Fatah, we believe that going to the talks in this way won't lead to any positive results," he said. "All that Abbas can do now is say no to any issue that contradicts the national interests of the Palestinians."

 

 

Hamas gaat door met 'verzet tegen bezetting'

 

Niet alleen Trouw, ook de Telegraaf spreekt van de 'islamitische verzetsbeweging Hamas' en van 'verzet tegen de bezetting'. Wat Hamas doet zijn aanslagen tegen burgers, zowel in Israel als op de Westoever. Sinds wanneer heet dat 'verzet'?? Ik dacht dat dat terrorisme heette, net als de aanslagen die we in Europa hebben gehad op onschuldige burgers door radikaal islamitische groeperingen en net als de acties van de Taliban in Pakistan waarbij vandaag wederom meer dan 50 doden izjn gevallen. Is dat soms ook 'verzet' tegen de regering die volgens de Taliban een te Westerse koers vaart? Zijn de Taliban en Al Qaida ook 'verzetsbewegingen'?

GAZA-STAD/JERUZALEM -  De Islamitische Verzetsbeweging Hamas heeft donderdag laten weten door te gaan met acties tegen de bezetting van de Westelijke Jordaanoever. Hamas-woordvoerder Sami Abu Zuhri zei dat het verzet doorgaat ondanks de maatregelen tegen sympathisanten van Hamas die zijn genomen na het doodschieten van vier Israëlische kolonisten dinsdag op de Westoever.

 

De bezettingsmacht en Fatah kunnen het verzet niet dwarsbomen, aldus de zegsman die doelde op de Israëlische bezettingsmacht en de milities van Fatah, de partij die een aantal Palestijnse enclaves op de bezette Westoever domineert. Die zijn in staat van verhoogde waakzaamheid na het doodschieten van de vier kolonisten en een schietpartij woensdag waarbij twee Israëli's op de Westelijke Jordaanoever gewond raakten. Hamas claimt daarvoor verantwoordelijk te zijn.

Hamas stelt donderdag dat al vijfhonderd van haar leden op de Westelijke Jordaanoever zijn opgepakt naar aanleiding van de aanslagen. Een Israëlische woordvoerder sprak van honderden arrestaties en een Palestijnse zegsman van 150 aanhoudingen. De Israëlische zegsman loofde de samenwerking met de Palestijnse veiligheidstroepen in de enclaves. Volgens hem is de samenwerking sinds de Israëlisch-Palestijnse akkoorden van Oslo (1993) niet zo goed geweest.

Aangenomen wordt dat de aanslagen verband houden met de nieuwe rechtstreekse onderhandelingen in Washington tussen Israëli's en Palestijnen. Daarbij spreekt de Palestijnse president Mahmoud Abbas, een van de oprichters van Fatah, met de Israëlische premier Benjamin Netanyahu. De onderhandelingen beginnen donderdag onder auspiciën van de Amerikaanse president Barack Obama. Hamas, de radicale beweging die in 2006 de laatste Palestijnse parlementsverkiezingen won, is opnieuw niet aanwezig bij de wederom door de VS aangestuurde Israëlisch-Palestijnse onderhandelingen.

Precies die nuance mist den Boer in de media. 'De berichtgeving over Israël gebeurt steeds eenzijdig, en ook nooit zonder het standpunt van de journalist zelf. Die subjectiviteit is begrijpelijk, maar net daarom draait elke dialoog nog steeds op niets uit.'

ANTWERPEN - Help, een jonge maker die nog gelooft dat theater de wereld kan veranderen! ILAY DEN BOER werkt dan ook rond een brandend thema: Israël en de joodse identiteit.

De Nederlander van joodse afkomst is deze maand in Vlaanderen te zien met twee producties: Dit is mijn vader en Janken en Schieten. Je herkent er meteen dezelfde hand in. Ze mikken op een grote intimiteit met het publiek: je zit er met je lip op, het is onmogelijk je eraan te onttrekken. Zelf put den Boer uit zijn eigen biografie, waarover hij innemend vertelt, prullaria presenteert en liedjes laat horen. De joodse cultuur trekt in het publiek zoals thee in een pot: traag op smaak. Tot die ontspannen stemming plots een wereldse draai om de oren krijgt. 'Ik hou van heftige eindes', bevestigt den Boer.

Voetbal en antisemitisme

Dit is mijn vader, geselecteerd voor het Nederlandse Theaterfestival, toont den Boer op scène in confrontatie met zijn eigen, niet-joodse vader. Ze hebben het over voetbal en antisemitisme in Nederland. In Janken en Schieten draait alles om den Boers grootmoeder. Ze ontvluchtte de nazi's tijdens de oorlog, en met twintig toeschouwers herbeleef je die tocht naar Israël in een busje. Rechtvaardigt haar traumatische én euforische ervaring van toen haar felle nationalisme jegens de Palestijnen vandaag? Den Boer, de Israëlische vlag om de schouders, sticht graag verwarring, bevraagt aangenomen overtuigingen.

Alles past in zijn zesdelige reeks Het Beloofde Feest, die hij in 2008 bij het Huis Van Bourgondië begon met de maaltijd-performance Eet smakelijk. Dat het om zelftherapie gaat, ontkent den Boer. 'Ik was daarvoor al in het reine gekomen met mijn afkomst. Wel wil ik vele eigen vragen over de joodse identiteit en mijn "thuisland, vertalen op politieke schaal. Ik voel woede, pijn en verdriet over wat daar vandaag gebeurt, en tegelijk heel veel liefde voor het land. Eén zaak was meteen duidelijk: als je zo'n complexe materie aanpakt, moet dat ongelooflijk genuanceerd gebeuren, over meerdere voorstellingen.'

Precies die nuance mist den Boer in de media. 'De berichtgeving over Israël gebeurt steeds eenzijdig, en ook nooit zonder het standpunt van de journalist zelf. Die subjectiviteit is begrijpelijk, maar net daarom draait elke dialoog nog steeds op niets uit.' Zelf liet den Boer zich bij de Israëlische inval in Gaza verleiden tot een panelgesprek in het nieuwsprogramma Nova. Dat zal hij niet gauw opnieuw doen. 'Je wordt vanzelf in een zwartwit-tegenstelling geduwd, terwijl mijn eigen mening over het conflict niet zo belangrijk is. Ik vind tegelijk heel veel en heel weinig. Het ene moment zus, het andere zo.'

Zo oordeelloos mogelijk

Daarom is theater voor den Boer hét medium om over de joodse identiteit te spreken. 'Je kunt allerlei uitgesproken perspectieven met elkaar confronteren, en er mensen in meesleuren. Dat is de essentie van dialoog. Zelf probeer ik zo oordeelloos mogelijk te zijn. Ik dompel me zelfs bewust onder in een blik die me niet eigen is, zoals die van mijn oma in Janken en Schieten. Door haar dagboeken snapte ik plots waarom de oorlog nu nog steeds voortduurt. En waarom ze ooit ging picnicken op de Gazastrook, terwijl daar net vele Palestijnen vermoord waren. Tegelijk vond ik dat walgelijk van mezelf. Zo'n moment stop je dan in de voorstelling.'

Nuance en debat

Soms komen op zijn werk ook mensen af die wel een scherp oordeel huldigen. 'Zo was er ooit een pro-Palestijnse activiste, dat voel je dan meteen aan haar kille blik. Het eerste halfuur moest ik keihard werken om haar sympathie te winnen. Maar achteraf schreef ze op haar blog: 'Voor het eerst begrijp ik de complexiteit van de Joodse identiteit.' Daar doe je het voor: voor de nuance in het debat. Zo kan theater de wereld veranderen. Als ik daar niet in zou geloven, heeft wat ik doe geen zin. Dan kan ik er beter mee ophouden.'

Hamas zweert aanvallen voort te zetten om vredesoverleg te ondermijnen

Het was natuurlijk te verwachten dat Hamas op deze manier roet in het eten probeert te gooien. Wat ik echter nog steeds moeilijk kan begrijpen is dat dergelijk gedrag voor sommige mensen het bewijs vormt dat Hamas serieus moet worden genomen en moet kunnen meepraten. Dus hoe misdadiger je opereert, hoe serieuzer men je moet nemen en hoe meer invloed en zeggenschap men je moet geven?

Overigens was het al een helse toer voor de VS om Abbas naar de onderhandelingstafel te krijgen, en Hamas heeft consequent gezegd niet met de goddeloze Joden van de zionistische entiteit te willen praten. De populariteit van Hamas in de Gazastrook is flink afgenomen sinds zij er aan de macht is; en het lukt Israel en de PA tot nu toe aardig om haar macht op de Westoever in te dammen. Er is dus geen enkele reden om Hamas voor haar geweld te belonen, en te suggereren dat zonder haar erbij te betrekken vrede onmogelijk zou zijn. Het is eerder omgekeerd. Vrede en Hamas sluiten elkaar vooralsnog uit.

Hamas vows to continue attacks

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Attacks by Hamas' armed wing will continue "in any form and in any place," including inside Israel and in Gaza, a spokesman said Thursday.

The Al-Qassam Brigades claimed responsibility for killing four settlers in a drive-by shooting near Hebron on Tuesday evening, and for injuring two Israelis in a similar attack by Romodin Junction near Ramallah a day later.

Al-Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Obeida said the second attack was "a slap in the face" for those who said the deadly shooting near Hebron would not be repeated.

Abu Obeida said the Ramallah shooting was timed "according to field circumstances" but added that it conveyed a message to negotiators who "conceded and went along with the forces of the occupation and made their efforts to chase the resistance fighters in the wake of the heroic Hebron attack."

Following the shooting in Hebron, Palestinian Authority security forces launched an arrest campaign in Hebron. At a press conference in Gaza on Thursday Hamas spokesman Sami Abu-Zuhri accused the PA of arresting 550 of the Islamist movement's affiliates.

Abu Zuhri reiterated Abu Obeida's insistence that the attacks would continue, and said the shootings in Hebron and Ramallah were "an evidence of the option of resistance and its resolve" in the face of security coordination between Israel and the PA.

At the same press conference, Hamas leader Fawzi Barhoum said the success of the two attacks, despite security coordination, demonstrated that "any gambling on eliminating resistance will lose."

The attack in Ramallah came as US President Barack Obama welcomed President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington, DC, a day ahead of the first session of direct peace negotiations in 20 months.

Speaking after the Hebron attack, Obama said the "senseless slaughter" would not derail peace talks. "And so the message should go out to Hamas and everybody else who is taking credit for these heinous crimes that this is not going to stop us."

Responding to Obama's message, Abu Obeida said the president's stance was expected but that "Al-Qassam does not gamble on the stances of the United States."
