"According to an army spokesman, the IDF received a report of three Palestinians who had crossed the border fence between Re'im and Kissufim. IDF forces, including a tank unit, were summoned to the scene.
Three soldiers descended from the tank and approached the fence by foot due to a regulation forbidding them from firing shells in the area for fear of hitting civilians."

Dat zij daardoor een hoger risico lopen gedood te worden moge duidelijk zijn, maar is geen reden van deze procedure af te wijken.

Two Israel Defense Forces soldiers were killed Friday in clashes with Palestinian militants near the Kissufim crossing on the Gaza border, the IDF spokesperson confirmed. One of the soldiers killed was the regiment's deputy commander.

The soldiers have been named as Major Eliraz Peretz, 31, from Kiryat Arba and First Lieutenant Ilan Sviatkovsky, 21, from Rishon Lezion.

Peretz' brother, First Lieutenant Uriel Peretz, was killed in south Lebanon in 1998.

Two more soldiers were wounded in the incident, one of whom is in serious condition.

During the incident, IDF troops shot and killed four Palestinian militants near the Gaza security fence as they allegedly attempted to plant an explosive device near the border.

According to the Palestinian news agencies, heavy crossfire was held between the IDF soldiers and the Palestinians near the Kissufim crossing east of Khan Yunis, during which the two Palestinians were killed.

"Hamas is accountable for any activity that takes place from Gaza to Israel. It doesn't matter if it took responsibility or not," an IDF spokeswoman told reporters in a briefing.

The incident began on Friday morning when IDF troops identified Palestinian militants moving towards the security fence north of Kissufim crossing. After several hours the Gaza military command decided to send IDF troops into the Gaza strip to scan the area.

From an initial military investigation, the troops under Peretz' command encountered the terrorists and opened fire from short range, GOC Southern Command Yoav Galant said Friday.

Apparently, one of the bullets fired in the soldiers' direction hit a hand grenade lodged in First Lieutenant Sviatkovsky's vest, who was then killed by the detonation.

Hamas said its gunmen fired on Israeli soldiers who crossed into the Gaza Strip.

"An Israeli army force raided 500 metres (yards) into Palestinian territory, and was confronted by our gunmen," said Abu Obeida, spokesman for the Hamas armed wing. "This was our work, but was carried out for defense."

Witnesses said Friday's exchange of fire began when an explosion, possibly caused by a anti-armor rocket fired from the nearby Palestinian town of Khan Yunis, hit an Israeli army patrol on the central Gazan border.

Backed by tanks, the troops fired back at their assailants and entered Gazan territory, the witnesses said. Such pursuits are common practice for the Israelis, who try to maintain a buffer zone within the border fence off-limits to Palestinians.

Tensions have run high along the Gaza frontier this month, with Israel launching repeated air strikes in response to Palestinian rocket attacks, one of which killed a Thai worker in a kibbutz last week.

Earlier this week, an IDF soldier Sergeant Gabriel Cepic from Zikhron Ya'akov was killed by friendly fire on the border with the Gaza Strip.

According to an army spokesman, the IDF received a report of three Palestinians who had crossed the border fence between Re'im and Kissufim. IDF forces, including a tank unit, were summoned to the scene.

Three soldiers descended from the tank and approached the fence by foot due to a regulation forbidding them from firing shells in the area for fear of hitting civilians.

At the same time, a jeep of soldiers from the army's Golani brigade also arrived in the area. Believing the tank troops to be terrorists, the Golani soldiers opened fire.

One soldiers was killed before the troops realized their error and ceased firing.

The three Palestinian infiltrators were captured and brought in for interrogation. During questioning, it became clear that the three were not terrorists but had attempted to enter Israel to look for work, the army said.

The IDF has opened an inquiry into the incident.
