"She said UNRWA had to carry on working until the refugees' problem was settled in accordance with the Assembly's resolution 194."

Kuwait lauds UNRWA efforts, stresses solidarity with Palestinians

Kuwait has emphasized the role of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), expressing full "solidarity" with the Palestinian people and demanding that Israel be committed to UN Security Council resolutions and the principle of "Land for Peace." The Kuwaiti delegation was addressing the Special Political and Decolonization Committee of the 62nd UN General Assembly. The statement was delivered late Thursday by diplomat Mona Bebehani, who underlined the role of UNRWA since it was established in providing health, educational, social and relief services for the Palestinian people.

She said UNRWA had to carry on working until the refugees' problem was settled in accordance with the Assembly's resolution 194.

The statement also urged UNRWA to carry out its operations in the five concerned areas -- the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan -- with no distinction of one area over the others.

It also pointed to financial hardships that UNRWA was facing, but at the same time hoped that it would carry on with its operations. Bebehani said Kuwait would continue support to UNRWA through its annual USD 5.1 million contribution out of the country's belief in the "just Palestinian cause."
Kuwait, government and people, has provided, and is still providing economic support to all the Palestinian refugees and has also financed many infrastructure projects through the international institutions, in addition to other project to maintain the Arab and Islamic identity of Jerusalem.
Supporting families of "Palestinian martyrs" is also a main concern, Bebehani said.

She referred to the Israeli oppressive measures and escalation against the Palestinian people, saying that Israel claimed it adopted such unjustified policies to protect its national security but the course of events proved that Israeli policies led to greater deterioration in the Palestinian territories.

In addition, the Israeli authorities hindered humanitarian activities by the UNRWA, Bebehani said.
