Barak: Israël moet met eigen vredesinitiatief komen

Goed idee, al begrijp ik niet precies wat hij met het volgende bedoelt:

He stressed that with Syria, "the price is known and the outcome important."

Betekent dat, dat hij op voorhand al de gehele Golan, tot aan het Meer van Galilea, 'weggeeft'? Waarom niet de oude internationale grens tussen het Mandaatgebied Palestina en Syrië aanhouden? Syrië heeft immers een deel van de Golan in 1948 met geweld ingepikt.

"Why not have an Israeli initiative?" Barak asked his aides. "Why shouldn't we stipulate out interests, what we want, what we are willing to give, and then launch our own peace plan as a starting point for negotiations?"

Een betere vraag was wellicht geweest: "Waarom hebben we niet allang ons eigen vredesinitiatief gelanceerd, en duidelijk gemaakt wat we te bieden hebben, maar ook waar absolute grenzen liggen?" Olmerts uitspraak over erkenning van Israël als voorwaarde voor verdere onderhandelingen heeft al een veelzeggende reactie opgeleverd. Israël zou op dezelfde manier duidelijk moeten maken dat alleen over Jeruzalem gepraat kan worden als de Palestijnen Joodse rechten in de Oude Stad erkennen.

In oorlog alsook in vrede geldt dat het belangrijk is het initiatief in handen te houden.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak supports a comprehensive peace initiative that would include promoting a peace agreement with Syria, Ynet has learned Monday evening.

Barak has told his associates in recent days that only such an initiative could stop other peace plans, like the Arab peace initiative, from being forced on Israel.

According to the defense minister, the issue of talks with the Syrians should be reexamined, and a change of policy may lead to positive results. He stressed that with Syria, "the price is known and the outcome important."

"Why not have an Israeli initiative?" Barak asked his aides. "Why shouldn't we stipulate out interests, what we want, what we are willing to give, and then launch our own peace plan as a starting point for negotiations?" he added.

Meanwhile, the preparations for the Annapolis peace conference continued in full speed. On Monday night, three members of the Israeli negotiating team left for Washington in order to coordinate expectations with the Americans ahead of the summit.
