IDF verplaatst afscheidingsbarrière rond Bil'in

Beter laat dan nooit wordt eindelijk de afscheidingsbarrière verplaatst bij dit Palestijnse dorp waar wekelijks demonstraties en rellen zijn. De reden dat het zo lang duurde lijkt te zijn dat het lastig was een precieze route te bepalen die recht doet aan Israels veiligheid en het oordeel van de rechtbank. Dit schrijft Haaretz:

The Israeli courts ruled in 2007 that the fence had to be moved after a petition from Bilin landowners two years previously. This prompted a to-and-fro with Israel's Defense Ministry until a final re-routing plan was accepted.
Colonel Saar Tzur, commander of an Israeli military brigade in the region, said moving the barrier would give Palestinians access to about 140 acres (57 hectares) of farmland, though they still remain cut off from a further 50 (20 hectares) of land.

Opvallend dat Haaretz het volgende niet opnam:

According to the IDF spokesperson, more than 200 Israeli security officers have withstood injuries from hurled rocks and other projectiles at these demonstrations.

In Nederlandse media worden deze demonstraties als voorbeelden van geweldloze actie neergezet, en als een manier van 'verzet' die nieuwe kansen biedt. Daarbij wordt graag het bekende beeld opgeroepen van het oppermachtige Israelische leger tegenover machteloze en onschuldige demonstranten. Dat de werkelijkheid minder zwart-wit is vergeet men voor het gemak graag.

IDF rerouting security barrier along Bil'in

In compliance with court order, current barrier will be dismantled and dozens of olive trees replanted; new barrier enlarges Palestinian territory.

The IDF on Sunday began a massive deconstruction of the portion of the security barrier running through the Palestinian village of Bil'in.

In compliance with a 2007 order from the Supreme Court, the IDF began dismantling a large section of the barrier in preparation for construction of a new route which will constitute a land gain for the Palestinians.
Before construction of the new route can begin, however, the IDF must uproot and subsequently replant dozens of Palestinian olive trees which grow in the disputed territory.

The new route will put the security barrier within 400 meters of Modi'in Illit and is estimated to cost NIS 26 million.

Every Friday, Bil'in has been the site of often-violent demonstrations against the security barrier. Speaking in April, Lt.-Col. Shahar Sheetrit, of the Central Command said he did not expect the rerouting to have an effect on the demonstrations.

According to the IDF spokesperson, more than 200 Israeli security officers have withstood injuries from hurled rocks and other projectiles at these demonstrations.
