Uit een vorig najaar gehouden enquete blijkt dat een grote meerderheid van de Palestijnen wil dat religie de bron van alle wetten is. Bijna 90% vindt dat vrouwen eerst toestemming moeten vragen aan een man (partner of familielid) om alleen te mogen reizen, driekwart wijst verkoop van alcohol aan volwassenen af, eveneens driekwart wijst de Europese democratie als model voor de toekomstige Palestijnse staat af, en 58% vindt dat Joden geen staatsburger van deze staat mogen zijn.
Voor de duidelijkheid: van mij mogen de Palestijnen hun staat inrichten zoals ze willen (hoewel dat laatste duidelijk racistisch is), zolang ze zich aan het internationale recht houden en Israël met rust laten. Maar laat het wel duidelijk zijn dat die dromen over een seculier-democratische staat, waar Joden en Arabieren in vrede en veiligheid voor altijd gelukkig zullen zijn, ver af staan van de realiteit. De Palestijnse staat zal hoogstwaarschijnlijk meer gaan lijken op een van de Arabische staten, met een beetje geluk Jordanië en met een beetje pech Syrië, dan op een (Westerse) democratie.
Palestijnen zien zich meer als moslim dan als Palestijn: terwijl 41% zich vooral moslim voelt, voelt slechts 29% zich in de eerste plaats Palestijn.

Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty, the liberal German civic education organization commissioned an opinion poll on "Liberal Values in the Palestinian Society". This opinion poll was carried out by "Near East Consulting", a renowned and highly qualified research institute based in Ramallah.
The survey was carried out from the 25th of September till the 18th of October 2007. A total of 1608 (out of a total of 1900 calls) respondents were selected in both regions.
