http://www.republiekallochtonie.nl/tijd-voor-een-neutraal-meldpunt-discriminatie-internet

tekst: Mohamed Aissati

http://www.republiekallochtonie.nl/mdi-reageert-op-beschuldigingen

06 januari 2011 | 10:21

"The Right was right, but the Right was also wrong. It understood the latent dangers in withdrawal, but completely failed to understand its necessity... The Right failed to grasp five years ago exactly what it refuses to grasp today... Israel must take its fate in its hands and act wisely to create a border between itself and Palestine. Only thus can it ensure its identity and legitimacy as a Jewish and democratic state."

Our status as a Western democracy will not survive our ruling over the Palestinians.

We appear to have reached the end of the latest fruitless attempt at resolving this too-long and too-bloody conflict. There's plenty of blame to go around. The Americans' early focus on a settlement freeze ensured that the Palestinians would have a perfect excuse to avoid direct negotiations – even though this had never before been a condition for peace talks. Meanwhile, the revelation that Mahmoud Abbas had rejected Ehud Olmert's parting offer of a two-state solution that went beyond anything previously offered in its crossing of supposed red lines was not a promising sign that the Palestinians were even ready to do a deal.

Binyamin Netanyahu responded to the US request by trying to appease Barack Obama while not alienating the settlers, ordering a 10-month moratorium but insisting it would be a one-time event. He ignored the advice of wiser heads in his government, such as Dan Meridor, who urged him to take the opportunity to make a distinction between the settlement blocs which, according to all previous peace proposals, would remain part of Israel, and settlements that would have to be evacuated as part of any future peace agreement.

However, far more depressing than this entirely predictable failure is the unavoidable feeling that, for some members of the government (possibly including the prime minister), the situation simply means we can go on as before.

They are surely familiar with the arguments for reaching a two-state deal. For the past decade or more, politicians on the Left and, increasingly, the center and even the Right have understood that Israel is fast heading toward a situation where the number of Arabs living in all the territory that it controls will outnumber the number of Jews. It would then face a demand for a one-state solution which would force it to either lose its Jewish character demographically or become an apartheid state.

This country needs to end the occupation, not for peace, not for the cause of Palestinian statehood, but for itself.

The reasons for this go beyond the demographic argument.

We should not underestimate how much we gain internationally by virtue of being part of the West. As much as we complain, justifiably, about the double standards in the Western media and among certain European "liberal" institutions, Israel is a close ally of not just the US, but the EU states, Canada, Australia and the liberal democratic world. This status is manifested in numerous ways, from preferential trade agreements, to diplomatic support at the UN, to cultural ties and more.

However, as Ehud Barak said just a few days ago: "The world is changing before our eyes, and is no longer willing to accept, even temporarily, our continued control over another people."

Quite simply, our status as a Western democracy will not survive our ruling over the Palestinians indefinitely. Security-based arguments for not returning to the pre-1967 borders are sound, but no Western government will accept that historical and religious ties to Judea and Samaria can justify Israel remaining in control there while denying the Palestinians equal rights.

IF YOU need another argument, how about this one: If we don't act to change the status quo, the Palestinians will. Threats to give up on a negotiated settlement and to go to the international community for support are not idle. If the world perceives us to be primarily to blame for the hold-up in negotiations (for example by continuing to build settlements in areas of the West Bank that will definitely be part of a future Palestinian state), there could be widespread support for an imposed solution, with the world – including our allies – recognizing the state of Palestine within the 1967 borders.

The final reason to end, finally, our control of the Palestinians is the simplest of all. It is wrong. Eitan Haber, who served as Yitzhak Rabin's bureau chief, has described how Rabin understood "that we could not continue to rule 2.5 million Palestinians against their will. The indications of moral deterioration that had appeared as part of our rule over the Arabs in the territories led him to recognize that we must not continue to dominate another people. The scenes of what the occupation was doing to the IDF and the behavior of soldiers at roadblocks or in the pursuit of demonstrators concerned him greatly."

Rabin was steeped in the founding values of the IDF. For him, young men and women should be donning the uniform with the pride that comes with defending one's country, not preparing to serve as the policemen of a military occupation.

There was a time not so long ago when unilateral withdrawal in the absence of a peace partner was a winning political platform. It was Kadima's avowed agenda when it finished as the largest party in the 2006 Knesset elections. The public was persuaded that we had to draw permanent borders which would be secure and defensible, separate from the Palestinians and leave to them the majority of the West Bank.

Before long, though, that bubble had burst, pricked by the precedents set in the two areas already vacated unilaterally – Gaza and southern Lebanon. Hamas and Hizbullah rained down rockets, and the vindicated Right punctuated its told-you-sos with grim assurances that an evacuated West Bank would quickly become yet another base for genocidal Iranian proxies.

However, as Haaretz commentator, Ari Shavit, recently pointed out, to cite the increased Kassams following disengagement is to miss the point: "The Right was right, but the Right was also wrong.

A withdrawal from part of the West Bank in the absence of a peace agreement need not be entirely unilateral. Earlier this year, Ehud Ya'ari, the country's most prominent Arabaffairs journalist, proposed an "armistice agreement," whereby we would evacuate settlers and soldiers from the vast majority of the West Bank, keeping enough territory to "thicken" the country at its most vulnerable points, but leaving contiguous territory for the Palestinians to establish a state with provisional borders. The question of final borders, as well as the thorny issues of the refugees and Jerusalem, would be left until the Palestinians were ready and willing to negotiate. Ya'ari believes the Palestinians could be persuaded to agree to this if the Western states that bankroll their economy endorse his plan.

This is not the cry of a utopian peacenik. Ya'ari's extensive sources in the Arab world tell him that the Palestinians will soon be pushing for one state-of-all-its-citizens – that is, one state on all the land, where Arabs would outnumber Jews. There would be no Jewish state here, just the latest Arab state: "The process of rethinking the goal of Palestinian statehood within the '67 borders is already at work, and Israelis have become so apathetic to anything that happens on the other side of the security fence that we as a society are way behind in reading the writing on the wall."

Does this apathy extend to the country's leaders? We must hope not. For one way or another, with or without a negotiating partner, we need to act. Netanyahu's principal focus on stopping Iran going nuclear is understandable, but continuing to rule over the West Bank poses no less of an existential threat to our Jewish and democratic state.

Zoals Elder of Ziyon terecht opmerkt:

And while he mentions that it looks like a video game, that is one great idea that someone could do - a video-game that shows the difficulty of fighting the IDF way, trying to avoid civilians while hitting terrorists pretending to be civilian. While, at the same time, worried that the rockets you are targeting don't end up hitting your own family.

The Israeli Way of War (Totten)

http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/2011/01/israeli-way-of-war-totten.html
His writings might meander, but they never fail to inform. A small sample:

God only knows how Hezbollah trains its fighters, but I have a pretty good idea what the Israelis are up to because Abe Lapson, an IDF director of combat engineering, hosted me at the urban warfare training center in the northern Negev near the border with Gaza.
They built a scale model city out there in the desert where Israeli soldiers engage in sophisticated combat exercises. They fight each other in these exercises, so it's always a challenge. Trained Israeli soldiers are far more dangerous than any army—even Hezbollah—the modern Arab world has yet produced.
I saw the skyline of the "city" as we approached on a road through desert, and from a distance it almost looks real. Up close it's different.
"It almost looks like a set for a video game," I said.
Lapson chuckled and said, "But it's real."
I could see everything from the control tower. The buildings are smaller and farther apart on the outskirts than they are in the center, just like a real village or town in the West Bank, Gaza, or Lebanon. And I have to say they did a pretty good job with the realism. Pyrotechnic teams set off explosions. Vehicles emit different colors of smoke depending on what kind of damage they've supposedly taken. Walls have simulated blast holes because doors and windows are often booby-trapped, forcing soldiers to create alternate entrances.
I've never been to a Hezbollah training camp, although I did ask Hezbollah officials if I could see one before they blacklisted me for "writing against the party." They refused. Still, I'm certain they don't have dummies representing civilians who aren't to be touched.

The Israelis do, though. They place mannequins on the grounds dressed in the clothes of civilians and peacekeepers as well as enemy soldiers and terrorists.
"The other side includes both hostiles and civilians," Lapson said, "and the hostiles will often embed themselves among the civilians. We go over a large number of what-if scenarios. We imbue an ethical and moral backbone in all our soldiers from the very beginning, and we have humanitarian officers with our infantry troops. We take extra precautions, even when it puts our own troops in danger."
Read the whole thing.

Janet Mikhail, Mayor of Ramallah, says it is "a human right for citizens to know where they are."

As political analyst Khalil Shaheen explains, "anyone who was killed by the Israelis, even in a car accident, is considered a martyr".

Sign of the times: Palestinian city's streets honor heroes and "terrorists"

Published: 06 January, 2011, 11:49

The West Bank city of Ramallah is naming its streets to mark its 100th anniversary, but some of the choices are causing controversy as they honor people involved in planning terrorist acts.

This naming is part of a regeneration scheme started two years ago, but it is already being seen by some as a sign of growing extremism.

Before the scheme was launched, there were no street names, street signs or house numbers that could help people navigate around the city.

Janet Mikhail, Mayor of Ramallah, says it is "a human right for citizens to know where they are."

Thus Yasser Arafat gets a square. And a street is called after the neighbourhood Al-Nuzha that used to exist in Arab Jaffa in the 1930s. Another street called Al-Awdeh, meaning 'return', is a call for Palestinian refugees to return to Israel.

The criteria for choosing a name are simple: heroes, places, and ideas supported by the Palestinian people.

"We don't differentiate between Hamas or Fatah," explains Janet Mikhail.

If anything, the opposite, as members of both organizations fighting for liberation are glorified. Which might surprise those who think the modern city of Ramallah would shy away from praising stalwarts of Hamas, an organization considered by many world powers as terrorist.

One of the thoroughfares is named after chief Hamas bomb maker – Yahya Ayyash, dubbed "the engineer". For three years he was Israel's most wanted man for masterminding suicide bombings that killed 90 Israelis, until he himself was killed.

As political analyst Khalil Shaheen explains, "anyone who was killed by the Israelis, even in a car accident, is considered a martyr".

Yahya Ayyash was killed by the Israeli internal security service after they tricked a friend of his into giving him a cell phone that was booby trapped. Fourteen years on his family is as proud as ever.

"I'm very pleased they've named roads and streets after him," says Yahya Ayyash's mother, Aisha. "My son is in my heart and I miss him. He's the hero of Palestine."

Surprisingly, not all the streets names are Palestinian. One street is called after Rachel Corrie, an American activist who was killed by an Israeli bulldozer during a demonstration in Gaza in 2003. Rachel was part of the International Solidarity Movement, a group that, as Israelis charge, aids Hamas and other Palestinian extremist groups.

The decision to name a busy street in Ramallah after her was anonymous.

Such attention, even to extremist groups, may be explained by the growing desire among Palestinians to change the current course of events.

"People in the West Bank are fed up with the way they have been ruled during the past 15 years and they're eager to try something else," believes Khalil Shaheen.

Polls show Hamas growing in popularity in the West Bank, while talks between rival Palestinian faction Fatah and Israel deadlock.

"Hamas is changing, Hamas is trying to speak in the language the West understands," argues Shaheen.

And as the new street signs go up in the city, it is becoming more and more clear that Hamas is also speaking in a language Ramallah Palestinians understand.

RP
------------

"Jewish" does not seem to describe a religion today (See:  What is "Jewish?" 1. Is it a religion?) since many Jews do not believe in god or follow any religious practices. This is true regardless of how the term is used in ordinary language.

If "Jewish" described members of a religion, the statements "Albert Einstein was Jewish", "Benjamin Disraeli was Jewish," "Baruch Spinoza was Jewish" would be instantly recognizable as incorrect.Einstein practiced and professed no religion. Disraeli was baptized and Spinoza was excommunicated. "Jewish" does not refer to a religious identity. both in Israel and the United States, but probably for different reasons.

In the United States, even the adherents of the different religious "Judaisms" cannot claim to belong to a single religion. Adherents of Reconstructionist Judaism may make pictures of their God and speculate about his multiple natures. Adherents of Neturei Karteh Judaism insist that being against the state of Israel is part of the Jewish "religion"  and fundamental to their "Judaism."  How and why did we get that way?

Jewishness was born a very long time before the concepts of religion and nationality evolved in Europe. Jews are one of a kind – a group that has survived for thousands of years, a religion centered about a non-existent homeland, a people detached from national life. In the days of the first Temple and before, there was probably no concept of "Jewishness." The Bible generally refers to "Bnei Yisrael"and separately to the people (am) Yisrael. The earliest reference to "Yehudi" – Jewish may be in the writings of the prophet Zechariah after the return from the Babylonian exile:

ZECHARIAH 8:23 Thus saith the LORD of Hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.

Hasmonean coins, about 100 B.C.E.  referred to "the Community (Chever) of the Jews (Yehudim)." The scroll of Esther  refers extensively to "Yehudim" and "Yehudi," but the date of this book is uncertain. "Jewish" as a syncretic national and religious identity seems to have been established some time in the Second Temple period. The name "Yehudi" is borrowed from the name of the surviving tribe of Judah, but this obvious semantic derivation is os less interest than the concept of Jewishness.

At this time there was both a Jewish community under Jewish sovereignty in the land of Israel, and at least two concentrations of Jews in exile – in Iraq and in Alexandria. The Diasporas of Iraq (Babylonia) and Alexandria were not passive aggregations of Jewish individuals, but organized and recognized self-sufficient communities under centralized direction.

The Babylonian community was ruled by an elected or appointed Exilarch, an institution that began with the exile of the First Temple and continued into the tenth century CE. Alongside the Exilarch and his scholars, the heads of the Sura and Pumbedita academies provided exclusively religious guidance, but the rule of the Exilarch had to be in accordance with Jewish law. insofar as concerned the internal workings of the Jewish community.   The Alexandrian community was ruled by  an appointed or elected ethnarch. All of the organization of Jewish religious observance was predicated on the existence of a Jewish community.  Kosher food required the existence of Kosher slaughterers, prayer required a quorum (minyan) of ten, marriage required the availability of suitable Jewish mates, education required community supported teachers who were knowledgeable in Hebrew and in the law.

The pattern of self-contained communities was emulated and extended after the final destruction of the Temple, both in Christian Europe and in the Arab world. In exceptional cases, such as Shmuel Hanagid of Granada, the ethnarch also had power in the state government.

Even before the fall of the Temple, Judaism came to be defined as a community religion and the Jews came to be identified, and to identify themselves, as members of that community. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the Talmud and Mishnah did not need to revolutionize the Jewish religion after the fall of the Temple, because the Jewish religion had in fact been practiced outside the land of Israel for hundreds of years in the Jewish mini-states of the Diaspora. The religion of the Mishnah shows distinct departures from ancient Jewish belief, such as belief in an afterlife, which probably was a product of contact with Babylonian and Persian thought. Small wonder then, that the rabbis of Babylonia could  quickly codify the practice of Judaism outside the Jewish state, and put this code in the Babylonian Talmud. They had already been practicing Judaism of this sort for almost a millennium. They did not sacrifice in the Temple, nor did they go to Jerusalem three times each year. All the regulations that applied to civil law could not apply to them if they conflicted with laws of the host state.

Jews did not exist anywhere as individuals, but as members of a community. This was true legally as well personally. The authorities granted rights to communities (for example, here). Individual Jews interfaced only with Jewish authorities, the Dayanim (religious judges) in some communities, or as they were called in England, the "Jewish Bishops."

Their "Jewish"  identities came to be molded around the local Jewish community. A network of rabbinic correspondence  and responsa assured that the scattered communities would remain synchronized, and allowed the dissemination of innovations such as monogamy, the Passover Haggadah and new prayers. Communities that were cut off from communication maintained their internal cohesion and identification as Jews, but generally  drifted away from the  practical observance of Jewish ritual.

"Jewries" were probably not the only autonomous communities in pre-modern life. The organization of monarchical entities without a modern bureaucracy for enforcement of the law and collection of taxes, required that the "state" consist of numerous essentially feudal relations with different communities. However, the organization of Jewish community life took advantage of this circumstance to establish a semi-autonomous community life pattern that did not change in its essentials from the ancient Babylonian and Persian empires, in the Roman and Muslim empires, and in the early European monarchies. In some places in Eastern Europe, the autonomy of the Jewish communities seems to have increased after the supposed end of the Middle Ages and extended to civil jurisdiction and corporal punishment.

It was not possible to be a Jew outside the Jewish community or in opposition to it. Excommunication, which was not the only weapon of the Jewish community, was a fearsome punishment. It also assured, in most cases, that there would would be no non-conforming Jews. Baruch Espinosa was a first and perhaps singular exception. The "Jewish community" and "Jewry" were not names given to abstract collections of individuals, but real organizational entities that collected taxes and paid taxes, issued decrees, demanded loyalty and provided essential services.

This world of Jewry was rudely disrupted by the changes in European society that were already beginning in the Fifteenth century, and were always evident in the United States, a revolutionary transformation that will be examined here.

Palestijnse families trots op hun martelaren

"Today he is a groom. I've sounded a joyous cry. He is a groom. He wanted to become a Martyr for a long time. When I told him: 'Find a job,' he said: 'I want to be a Martyr.'"

"By Allah, we welcome every Martyr as if he were a groom among us."
"If I were young and could bear children who would fight the way my children fought, and another generation of my children could arise, I would do it," said a mother of one Shahid (Martyr) and five prisoners, expressing pride in her children.

"I know that my son, praise Allah, died as a Shahid, and all the glory and honor is that my son is a Shahid."

Martyrs and terrorist prisoners source of pride for Palestinian families
http://palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=157&doc_id=4119

by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik

Dying as a Martyr for Allah - becoming a Shahid - continues to be presented as a positive achievement in Palestinian society. As documented by Palestinian Media Watch, for years the Palestinian Authority has promoted Martyrdom as an ultimate value and goal both to adults and children. Still today, aspiring to become a "Martyr" is considered an honor and praised by society. Often the death and funeral of a "Martyr" is referred to as a wedding and he himself is considered a "groom" who marries the virgins of Paradise.

When a Palestinian was killed by Israel last week while placing a landmine by the security fence in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, a female relative explained:
"Today he is a groom. I've sounded a joyous cry. He is a groom. He wanted to become a Martyr for a long time. When I told him: 'Find a job,' he said: 'I want to be a Martyr.'" Click to see video

Emphasizing the idea of the "Martyr" becoming a groom, a woman earlier this year exclaimed on PA TV:
"By Allah, we welcome every Martyr as if he were a groom among us."

Parents who themselves have lost children, encourage others to also "sacrifice" their children. A mother of a "Martyr" said about her dead son: "Praise to Allah, he sought Martyrdom, and he achieved it. My message to every mother is to sacrifice her child for Palestine." Click to view

"If I were young and could bear children who would fight the way my children fought, and another generation of my children could arise, I would do it," said a mother of one Shahid (Martyr) and five prisoners, expressing pride in her children.

Another mother, whose son died in prison said: "I know that my son, praise Allah, died as a Shahid, and all the glory and honor is that my son is a Shahid."
All sources and translations below.

Palestinians who have killed Israelis or aided others in doing so, and who are serving time in Israeli prisons, are likewise considered heroes of Palestinian society.

Recently, the weekly PA TV program At the Fighter's Home chose to honor terrorist prisoner Sanaa Shehadeh by visiting her home and family. Shehadeh is serving 3 life sentences in prison for transporting a suicide terrorist to Jerusalem in 2002. Three civilians were killed and dozens wounded in the attack.
Her father told PA TV:

"I am proud of my daughter Sanaa, and say that she is a heroine... I call her the 'heroine of Jerusalem', and sometimes 'the heroine of Palestine'."
[PA TV (Fatah), Dec. 22, 2010]

Previously PA TV had already honored prisoner Sanaa Shehadeh by visiting her home and broadcasting her two nieces singing her a song. Click to see PMW's report on her nieces singing her an anti-Israel war song.

Last month, the Ministry of Prisoners' Affairs chose to honor two prisoners, Sami Younis and Hadil Abu Turki. Sami Younis is convicted of planning and carrying out a kidnapping in 1980 of an Israeli soldier who was later killed. Hadil Abu Turki tried to stab an Israeli soldier in Hebron in 2009. The PA Minister of Prisoners' Affairs, Issa Karake, bestowed her family with an "award of honor" (see picture.)

The PA Minister for Prisoners' Affairs also recently decided to honor a woman because she is the mother of four sons who together are serving 18 life sentences in Israeli prisons for murdering 18 people.

PMW has documented the policy of the PA to honor terrorists by naming permanent structures and events after them in the report
From Terrorists to Role Models (pdf).

PMW has documented the
success of the PA's Shahada promotion, including parents celebrating their children's death.

Following are excerpts of various family members expressing pride and joy over their "Martyr" and prisoner family members:

The weekly PA TV program At the Fighter's Home visits prisoner Sanaa Shehadeh's home. Shehadeh is serving 3 life sentences in an Israeli prison for transporting a suicide terrorist to Jerusalem in 2002. On PA TV, her father explained how proud he is of his daughter:
"I am proud of my daughter Sanaa, and say that she is a heroine... I call her the 'heroine of Al-Quds' [Jerusalem], and sometimes 'the heroine of Palestine'."

Ministry of Prisoners' Affairs honors prisoners who killed Israelis and aided terrorists:
"Marking the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Ministry of Prisoners' Affairs yesterday at the El-Bireh municipality honored the oldest prisoner in the occupation's prisons, Sami Younis (Abu Nader) from Ara, inside the Green Line, who is over 80, and the [youngest] female prisoner Hadil Abu Turki of Hebron (15). ... [Minister of Prisoners' Affairs, Issa] Karake emphasized: 'Our position, in the Palestinian Authority, is that the prisoners of Jerusalem and of Palestine occupied in 1948 must be a basic and fundamental part of any political solution, and they must not remain outside of any agreement, as Israel wishes [them to], claiming that it regards them as Israeli citizens, while it denies them elementary civil rights.' Karake called upon those responsible on the Palestinian side for a prisoner exchange deal for Shalit, not to submit to the Israeli wishes, and to insist on including the prisoners of Jerusalem and Palestine occupied in 1948 in this deal."

PA TV news report:
Mother upon news of son's death in an IDF airstrike: "We had always hoped for his [my son's] Martyrdom (Shahada), knowing he wanted to die as a Martyr (Shahid). Every time he went out, we would say to him, 'May Allah be with you.' We knew that he wanted to die as a Martyr. Praise to Allah, he sought Martyrdom, and he achieved it. My message to every mother is to sacrifice her child for Palestine.

"It's not just a disgrace against the owners, it's a disgrace against history," said Adnan Abdul Razeh, a resident of Bab e-Zahara, a neighborhood south of Sheikh Jarrah. His wife was a niece of Haj Husseini.
"They're trying to erase this, but it will stay in people's minds, they can't erase a whole nation. No imperial power has ever stayed in Jerusalem, not the Ottomans, not the British, and not Israel."

Erekat accused Israel of conducting a policy of "ethnic cleansing" against Arabs in Jerusalem.
"Israel is demolishing Palestinian buildings one after the other in an attempt to ethnically cleanse Jerusalem from its Palestinian inhabitants, culture and history," he said. "Israel is targeting east Jerusalem in general and Sheikh Jarrah in particular through a fierce campaign to expel Palestinian residents from their homes and replace them with Jewish settlers."
Erekat said such actions, which he dubbed illegal, were designed to undermine the two-state solution and the peace talks.

Clinton criticizes east Jerusalem Shepherd Hotel demolition

Construction of Jewish homes in Sheikh Jarrah gets underway after hotel built by former mufti of J'lem, Haj Amin al-Husseini, is demolished.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton strongly criticized Israel for the demolition of a vacant but historic hotel in an Arab neighborhood of east Jerusalem, saying that the move undermines US efforts to restart stalled peace talks.

In a statement released from Abu Dhabi, where she was beginning a tour of the Persian Gulf, Clinton said Sunday that the destruction of the Shepherd Hotel to make way for a new Jewish housing development "contradicts the logic" of Israel and the Palestinians negotiating a solution to their differences over Jerusalem, one of the most explosive issues in Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking. Clinton said the United States is "very concerned" about the demolition.

Demolition of the Shepherd Hotel, in east Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, began at dawn on Sunday.

It came after a long battle over construction rights that drew condemnation from US President Barack Obama and other leaders around the world over the past few years.

The hotel, which was built in the 1930s by the mufti of Jerusalem Haj Muhammad Amin al-Husseini (1921- 1948), was bought in 1985 by American millionaire Irving Moskowitz, who has bankrolled other Jewish housing projects in Arab neighborhoods in the capital. Moskowitz, partnering with the Ateret Cohanim organization, plans to turn the complex into 20 apartments for religious Jewish families.

The building received a construction permit from the municipality six months ago, the last stamp of approval needed before construction can begin.

Construction was delayed for six months over a dispute with a son of Faisal al-Husseini (1940-2001), a cousin of Haj Husseini and a former Palestinian Authority minister for Jerusalem affairs, who claimed that the family owned part of the parking lot that will serve as an entrance to the future complex. They lost the court case about a month ago, allowing Moskowitz to start demolishing the building.

On Sunday, only the right side of the building was demolished. Because of its historical value, the façade of the left part will be remain intact.

The first bulldozers arrived around 5 a.m.; by noon the right half of the four-story structure was a pile of rubble.

Chief PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat condemned the project. "As long as this government continues with settlement and acts such as the demolition of the Shepherd Hotel there will be no negotiations," Erekat said.

City Councilor Elisha Peleg (Likud), who sits on the Local Planning and Construction Committee that gave the plan the building permit half a year ago, defended the Jewish right to build in east Jerusalem.

"It's a very simple thing, people are just trying to make a provocation," Peleg told The Jerusalem Post at the demolition site on Sunday. For several hours he was a lone voice defending the construction against an angry crowd of Arab activists and residents.

"Jews building in Jerusalem is routine. Arabs are building all the time in east Jerusalem, and no one comes to photograph them," Peleg said.

Around 50 left-wing activists, mobilized by the Sheikh Jarrah Solidarity Movement, protested the demolition at the site on Sunday afternoon. The Solidarity Movement has also organized weekly protests in the neighborhood to protest the eviction of three Arab families from Jewish-owned apartments.

Resident Nasser Ghawi, who was evicted in August 2009, said he expects the hotel to become a new focal point for protests.

"It's magnificent, this is beautiful," Ateret Cohanim spokesman Danny Luria said, watching the dust rise from the bulldozers and passing out pamphlets highlighting Haj Husseini's connection to the Nazis and to the death of thousands of Jews in pogroms that he encouraged.

"Call it poetic justice, call it historic justice, this is something special... The symbolism of destruction of the house of a Nazi is rather unique," Luria said.

Moskowitz's original plan included 100 apartments, but it was scrapped because it would have needed to go through a lengthy approval process by the Local and District Planning and Building committees.

Since the plot had been zoned for up to 20 residential units under the a master plan for Sheikh Jarrah, by not exceeding the zoning plan Moskowitz was able to bypass the regular approval process, which includes approval from the Interior Ministry.

Nabil Abu Rudaineh, a spokesman for PA President Mahmoud Abbas, said Israel had no right to build in any part of east Jerusalem or the Palestinian territories that were captured in 1967.

By demolishing the hotel, Israel had destroyed all US efforts to revive the peace process, Abu Rudaineh. The Obama administration should put an end to Israel's practices if it wanted to maintain its credibility, he said.

The PA was determined to seek a UN Security Council resolution condemning construction in the settlements, he said. Yasser Abed Rabbo, a senior PLO official and adviser to Abbas, said the razing of the hotel would have "grave repercussions" for the region.

"The actions of this Israeli government prove that it does not want peace," he said. "Israel is only interested in creating new facts on the ground."

Abed Rabbo too said that the demolition of the hotel would accelerate the PA's plan to seek a Security Council resolution condemning the settlements.

The PA-appointed mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Hussein, said that the demolition of the historic hotel was in the context of Israel's "arbitrary actions to Judaize Jerusalem and wipe out its Arab and Islamic character."

Earlier, PA negotiator Nabil Shaath said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu did not want peace.

"Netanyahu is a dangerous man," Shaath said. "He doesn't want peace and stability in the region. He doesn't want the Palestinians to have their own independent state."

Obama first condemned the Shepherd Hotel project in July 2009, followed by similar complaints from Britain, France, Germany, Sweden and Russia.

The British Embassy condemned the demolition anew on Sunday.

"The British government reaffirms its strong, long-standing opposition to the creation of this new illegal settlement in occupied east Jerusalem and condemns today's demolition in Sheikh Jarrah. The establishment and expansion of settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories are illegal," said Alistair Burt, minister for the Middle East and South Asia.

"This latest settlement activity does not help – on the contrary, it raises tensions unnecessarily."

The British Consulate in east Jerusalem is next to the Shepherd Hotel property.

Catherine Ashton, the European Union's foreign policy chief, said, "I strongly condemn this morning's demolition of the Shepherd Hotel and the planned construction of a new illegal settlement. I reiterate that settlements are illegal under international law, undermine trust between the parties and constitute an obstacle to peace."

IDF commander: We will deal with those that fired mortars

Armed wing of Islamic Jihad claims responsibility for attack on Kibbutz Sha'ar Hanegev in which 3 foreign workers were hurt; al-Quds Brigades: "We will take path of Jihad until all our lands are freed."

The armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the al-Quds Brigades, took responsibility for mortar fire that injured three agricultural workers on Saturday.

In a statement on its website, the group said that "it is the resistance's right to act against any Zionist aggression against our people." It continued, "We will take the path of resistance and jihad until all our lands are freed," Channel 10 reported.

OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Tal Russo Saturday evening visited the kibbutz struck by the mortar shells that injured the agricultural workers earlier in the day.

Russo, speaking at Kibbutz Sha'ar Hanegev, said that the IDF is currently dealing with the event on an operational level. "We will deal with those who fired the mortars and those who sent them," he clarified.

Four mortar shells fired by Palestinian terrorists in Gaza landed in the kibbutz, injuring three foreign agricultural workers on Saturday - one of them seriously.

One shell struck a building housing the workers, who were employed by the kibbutz. One man is in serious condition and has been taken for surgery with shrapnel wounds to his chest.

Two others were moderately and lightly injured by shrapnel, the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva, which treated the injured, said.

A number of people suffered shock as a result of the attack and were treated on the scene by paramedics.

Police in the Negev said a total of four mortar shells with a diameter of 181 millimeters were fired at the western Negev on Saturday afternoon.

Towards the evening, an additional mortar shell fired from Gaza landed in an open area in the Eshkol Regional Council. No injuries or damages were reported.

On Friday, one IDF soldier was killed and four injured, apparently from friendly fire, when their patrol was ambushed by terrorists along the central Gaza border fence. A number of mortars were also fired into Israel by Palestinians throughout the day.

On Thursday, two Palestinians were shot and killed by the IDF while attempting to penetrate the border fence and enter Israeli territory.

The same day, The IAF carried out two air strikes in the Gaza Strip. The IDF spokesman said that a terror base in the northern Strip and a smuggling tunnel in southern Gaza were struck.

"Chile has recognized the Palestinian state as a free, independent and sovereign state," Chilean President Sebastián Piñera announced. "In this way we contribute to that end may exist in the Middle East, a Palestinian state and a state of Israel that can live in peace and prosperity and recognized frontiers with secure borders."

More nations will recognize Palestinian state, PA says

After Chile's recognition, Foreign Ministry says move does not promote negotiations; MK Shai: Israeli foreign policy "paralyzed."

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki praised Chile for its decision to recognize a Palestinian state, Army Radio reported on Saturday.

Maliki added that he believed other states would also recognize a Palestinian state despite Israel and US efforts to prevent such recognition.

After a day of conflicting reports, Chile joined a growing number of Latin American nations on Friday night officially recognizing Palestinian statehood.

The Foreign Ministry expressed regret over the Chilean government's decision to recognize the existence of a Palestinian state.

The statement from Jerusalem said such acts of recognition do not promote negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

MK Nahman Shai (Kadima) criticized the government and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman specifically, for its treatment of the growing phenomenon of countries recognizing a Palestinian state.

Following Chile's announcement, Shai said "Chile's decision accelerates Israel's diplomatic downfall. Chile is the fifth nation to take this decision, despite the prime minister's last minute appeal to Chile's president. Israel's foreign policy is paralyzed, but the foreign minister is busy with forming investigative parliamentary committees and internal politics."

While the Chilean proclamation was nuanced, stressing Israel's right to security, it is considered a stinging defeat for Jerusalem which argues the creation of a Palestinian state should only be part of a comprehensive peace agreement.

Over the past few weeks pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian lobby groups have been battling to influence Santiago's decision regarding Palestinian statehood. Leaders of Chile's Palestinian community, which numbers 400,000 people and is the largest on the continent, declared their support for the Palestinian cause while leaders of Chile's 10,000-strong Jewish community lobbied on behalf of Israel.

Despite the outcome, Gabriel Zaliasnik, president of Chile's Jewish community, said he was "satisfied" with the wording of the proclamation because it did not refer to borders.

"Israelis and Palestinians will eventually define all the core issues like borders," he said. 'For the Jewish people, Jerusalem and borders of the state of Israel can not be provided to third parties."

Unlike the five previous Latin American countries which have recognized a Palestinian state in the past three months, including Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia and Ecuador, Chile has a right-leaning government whose politics are not necessarily critical of the US, and by extension, of Israel. Some believe Chile's decision may pave the way for other right-leaning governments in the area like Colombia, Mexico and Peru to recognize a Palestinian state.

„Niets is minder waar", aldus De Ruiter.
