Mini-survey exposes obsession

http://fresnozionism.org/2012/01/mini-survey-exposes-obsession/

I spent a few minutes on Twitter this morning. Here are some of the things I found:

Adam Levick describes the (UK) Guardian’s fixation on Israel:

What particularly stands out is that Israel, a stable democracy, was covered more than war-torn Afghanistan, Syria (in a year which saw brutal violence in what may be the beginning of regime change), Greece (hit by nothing short of an economic Tsunami), Iraq (a year where terrorism and related inter-sectarian violence still claimed over 4,000 lives), Pakistan (where civil war in the northwest region of the country resulted in over 6000 dead for the year), and Tunisia (where longtime President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was ousted in a revolution)

Even further down on the list are countries you’d expect would receive more coverage: Turkey (326 tags), Sudan (173 tags), Bahrain (348 tags, despite an uprising against the government which resulted in many dead and several thousand arrests).  [Israel had 1005 tags - RP]

Martin Kramer relates Hamas leader Hanyeh’s cheerleading in Tunis:

So Ismail Haniya, Hamas “prime minister” from Gaza, visits Tunisia (http://goo.gl/LQTJz) to cuddle with the fairly-elected “moderate” Islamist Nahda party, and a crowd at the airport greets him (in Arabic) thus:
Cheerleader: “Kick the Jews!”
Crowd: “It’s [our] duty!”
Cheerleader: “Drive out the Jews!”
Crowd: “Duty!”
Cheerleader: “Kill the Jews!”
Crowd: “Duty!”
Oh, don’t get so worked up. They really meant the Zionists, right?

Somebody named Pat Carmeli writes (on anti-Israel scumbag Philip Weiss’ website) that police officers guarding synagogues are anti-peace:

I asked the officer if he provides security for churches or mosques and he replied that he might direct traffic after a “big football game at a Catholic school.”  This officer, it turned out, frequently works events at area synagogues.  I just wonder if the police presence at these events, serves as a constant reminder to the attendees of “Jews as victims,” and if in some small and indirect way it hinders the pursuit of a real peace based on fairness and justice for all.

This one, which defies description:

A Dubai fitness center has pulled an ad that featured train tracks to the Auschwitz death camp and the slogan,” Kiss your calories goodbye.”

Phil Parkinson, manager of the Circuit Factory in Dubai, admitted he was “not surprised people have reacted so strongly regarding the poster,” according to GulfNews.com. “The creative team got it badly wrong. I am not surprised people are upset,” he said, adding that he was “mortified” when he saw the ad. He tweeted: “Apologies for the insane poster campaign that was put up this morning. The creative guy has been told where to go.”

Egypt reportedly plans to bill Israel for destroying its air force “for no reason” in 1967, among other things.

Conspiracy nut Wayne Madsen has ‘proof’ that the Mossad was responsible for 9/11:

A Mossad unit consisting of six Egyptian- and Yemeni-born Jews infiltrated “Al Qaeda” cells in Hamburg (the Atta-Mamoun Darkanzali cell), south Florida, and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates in the months before 9/11. The Mossad not only infiltrated cells but began to run them and give them specific orders that would eventually culminate in their being on board four regularly-scheduled flights originating in Boston, Washington Dulles, and Newark, New Jersey on 9/11.

In Italy,

In the end of December, [an Italian] high school teacher posted on Facebook a picture of Mussolini shaking the hand of Hitler, and wrote a message saying: “Take a look, you dirty bastard Jews who control us from the land of shit and homosexuals called California. If you remove this picture, I will go to the synagogue next to my house, with my pistol, and gun down some parasite Jews.”

These are just items posted over a period of several hours! None of it would make sense in a rational world. There is a worldwide obsession with Jews and Israel, stupid and vicious.

C'tee passes bill banning use of Nazi symbols

http://www.jpost.com/DiplomacyAndPolitics/Article.aspx?ID=252808&R=R1

By LAHAV HARKOV

Anyone caught using Nazi name-calling, symbols in public to be fined; bill approved after "haredi concentration camp protest."

Anyone who uses Nazi name-calling or symbols in public will be fined NIS 100,000, according to a bill approved by the Ministerial Committee on Legislation on Monday.

The proposal, by MK Uri Ariel (National Union), came after a recent protest by haredi [ultra-Orthodox] groups, in which demonstrators dressed in concentration camp uniforms and wore yellow stars on their clothing.

Ariel pointed out that his bill does not differentiate between rioters in Bil’in, “price tag” attackers or haredim that “cynically and inappropriately” use Nazi imagery.

Activists protesting a number of causes have turned to the Nazi slur and symbol in order to raise the stakes on their issues, and catch the public eye.

Two men were arrested, for example,
after they uploaded a picture of the Jerusalem police chief donning a Nazi SS uniform.

Holocaust imagery, including the yellow Jewish "Juden" star,
was used by ultra-Orthodox protesters in the Geula neighborhood in Jerusalem to protest what they saw as incitement against the haredi community.

Late last year, when right-wing activists stormed an IDF base in the West Bank one vandal
called deputy brigade commander Harpaz Zur, who's grandmother survived the Holocaust, a "Nazi."

As part of his trajectory toward middle-aged respectability, the subjects of his weekly columns changed from folksy family-life fodder to weighty perorations on the main issues of the day and Israel's future. Essentially, he was building up a manifesto for a "sane" mainstream Israel.
He took care not to stray too far to either extreme. He remained secular, but also connected to Jewish roots and biblical sources, in favor of compromise with the Palestinians but full of sympathy for the settlers, projecting a vision of a westernized Israel with a Mediterranean aroma. If no man can be all things to all people, Lapid has certainly tried.

Yair Lapid's quest to be the epitome of the new Israeli

http://www.haaretz.com/news/national/yair-lapid-s-quest-to-be-the-epitome-of-the-new-israeli-1.406310

In a media career that spanned three decades, 48-year-old Lapid has done everything to epitomize the 'new Israeli' and, since there is no clear definition of what that is, he has strived to create it in his own image.

By Anshel Pfeffer

Broadcaster-columnist-author Yair Lapid is now – as of Sunday – an "official" politician. It may seem baffling to those unfamiliar with the man that, according to polls, some ten percent of Israelis would be willing to cast their vote for his new party, which has not yet even been formed. But those who have followed Lapid over the years know it is impossible to find him a parallel in the spheres of American or British journalism and politics.

In a media career that spanned three decades, 48-year-old Lapid has done everything to epitomize the "new Israeli" and, since there is no clear definition of what that is, he has strived to create it in his own image. For eight years he presented the eponymous "Yair Lapid" talk show on Channel Two prime time, in which the last question he presented to each of his guests was, "What is Israeli in your eyes?" In perhaps one of the greatest giveaways of his career, he interviewed his father, journalist-turned-politician Yossef "Tommy" Lapid, whose answer to this question was an emotional, "You."

While Lapid Junior now seems to be emulating his father by leaving media for politics, there is only a superficial resemblance between the two cases. While Tommy Lapid took pride in his Hungarian origins, writing cookery books redolent of paprika and tour-guides to classical Europe, his son yearns to be the ultimate Sabra. And while the father almost entered politics by accident, agreeing at the last moment to step in and save the nearly-extinct Shinui faction, subsequently leading it to electoral success in two campaigns, his son has been planning his platform for years and, by all reports, intends to launch his very own, resolutely middle-of-the-road party.

Lapid breathed journalism from birth: his maternal grandfather was a founder of Maariv newspaper, his father one of its most prominent writers and his mother a best-selling author and playwright. He didn't waste a minute in his pursuit of the family vocation, serving his army duty as a reporter for the Israel Defense Forces magazine "Bamahane" and, following that, launching his own meteoritic career on the pages of Maariv.

Lapid is a talented writer. Early forays in small poetry magazines showed he had a promising future in that field. But he preferred the mass-market. After fifty years of familial loyalty to Maariv, he crossed the road and flogged his popular weekend column to Yediot Ahronot, which offered both big money and a much wider audience. On television, he plowed a similar furrow, moving from the staid national broadcaster to commercial Channel Two.

Over the years, he established his credentials as a polymath for the masses. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he tried his luck in Hollywood and on the local movie scene - appearing in a couple of films and even entering the boxing ring for a few disastrous bouts - but he steadily gravitated toward more "serious" media. He wrote everything - plays, detective stories and pop songs - always with the knack of producing bestsellers. On the way, he utilized his film-star looks to make millions in advertising and was routinely voted one of Israel's sexiest men.

His most significant career move - until now - took place four years ago, when he lowered the curtain on his talk show, terminated his advertizing contracts and became a full-time political journalist, anchoring Channel Two's flagship news program, Ulpan Shishi (Friday Studio). He opened his first night with the self-regarding words "I am Yair Lapid and I am wearing a tie."

Though he frequently denied it, his columns and public appearances over the last few years were increasingly those of a politician with a plan on the stump. His prevarications in recent months sounded particularly pathetic as more details emerged of public figures planning to run with him in the next elections and a team of unofficial advisors already devising his elections strategy. Now that he has finally taken the plunge, it is clear he has already mastered the politician's art of deception.

Palestinian detained in possession of improvised gun, commando knife and ammunition. Man, three others suspected of aiding him, taken in for questioning

A Palestinian was arrested by Military Police and Border Guard officers Sunday morning at the entrance to a checkpoint in the Jenin area in possession of an improvised gun, a commando knife and 11 explosive devices of different sizes.

Three other men suspected of aiding him were also detained. According to suspicions, the four were on their way to carry out a terror attack. The checkpoint has been closed.

After being arrested at the entrance to the Salem crossing in the Jenin area, the suspects were taken in for questioning by the security forces. The explosive devices they were carrying were destroyed.

The devices were found in the Salem crossing, where Palestinians wait in line for the Jenin Military Court, located nearby. It's unclear whether the court was the target of the attack.

A Military Police soldier spotted the four Palestinians trying to enter the checkpoint and wires sticking out of the clothes of one of them. He ordered him to lift up his hands and undress and found three pipe bombs on his body.

A search of the Palestinian's bag revealed eight more pipe bombs, a knife and an improvised gun. The four Palestinians were locked in the building and police sappers were dispatched to the area.

The other three Palestinians were not carrying anything on their body, but were questioned on suspicion of aiding the man caught with the explosives.

A senior officer explained that this was an unusual incident. "Eleven devices is an exceptional amount in one time. We've had incidents this year of three or four devices seized at the same time."

Last week, a Border Guard force arrested a Jenin resident on suspicion of planning a stabbing attack in Beersheba. The man was located in a hideout in the southern city and taken in for questioning by the Shin Bet, as was another Palestinian arrested at the Shoket Junction.

Rapport OECD: Israel vijfde in levensverwachting

Infant mortality rates in Israel, like in all other OECD countries, have dropped in recent decade. The Israeli rate is relatively low, standing at 3.8 deaths per 1,000 births, compared to a 4.4 average in OECD countries.

OECD: Israel 5th in life expectancy

International economic organization's report points to significant drop in infant mortality, higher cancer survival rates, although public and private healthcare spending in Jewish state is among lowest in world

Dr. Itay Gal

Published:

11.24.11, 09:01

A new report released Wednesday by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reveals encouraging figures about the healthcare situation in Israel.

Israeli life expectancy is among the highest in the world, and fifth among OECD countries, infant mortality rate is among the lowest in the world, and a significant improvement has been recorded in the treatment of chronic diseases.

And yet, Israel's situation is not so good when it comes to the treatment of asthma and lung diseases.

According to the report, most OECD countries recorded a significant rise in life expectancy rates in recent decades thanks to the improvement in living conditions, public health interventions and the improvement in medical care.

Israel has one of the world's highest life expectancies, standing at 81.6 years in 2009 – about two years more than the OECD average of 79.5. Japan had the highest life expectancy in 2009 – 83 years.

The difference between male and female life expectancy in Israel in 2009 stood at 3.8 years in favor of women. Men live 79.7 years on average; women live 83.5 years. This difference is relatively low compared to the OECD average, which stood at 5.5 years in favor of women.

Why is it so? The answer may be found in the report's other data. Infant mortality rates in Israel, like in all other OECD countries, have dropped in recent decade. The Israeli rate is relatively low, standing at 3.8 deaths per 1,000 births, compared to a 4.4 average in OECD countries.

Living longer after heart attack, stroke

A significant drop has been found in mortality from heart disease. While in 2000 some 8.1% of heart patients died in Israeli hospitals within 30 after being hospitalized, the average in 2009 stood at only 4.1%. According to Israeli figures, heart disease mortality rates fell from 7.1% in 2000 to 4.5% in 2009.

A drop was also recorded in mortality from stroke: The death rate at Israeli hospitals within 30 days after hospitalization due to a stroke fell from 5.1% in 2000 to 3.5% in 2009, compared to a more moderate drop in OECD countries (from 6.2% to 5.2%) over the same period.

Surviving cancer

Additional encouraging figures can be found in cancer survival rates, thanks to early diagnoses and improved treatment over the years.

For example, women's survival rate five years after the diagnosis of breast cancer increased in OECD countries from 79% in 2002 to 84% in 2009. In Israel, breast cancer survival rates are even higher – up from 80.5% in 2002 to 86% in 2008.

The survival rates for colorectal cancer five years after diagnosis are higher in Israel compared to the OECD average, up from 58.7% in 2002 to 64.7% in 2008.

Better treatment of diabetes

An improvement has also been recorded in the treatment of diabetes: In OECD countries, 50 out of 100,000 adults are hospitalized every year for uncontrolled diabetes. In Israel the rate is particularly low, standing at only seven out of 100,000 adults despite a 6.5% diabetes prevalence rate among the population, similar to the OECD average.

Insufficient treatment of asthma

Nonetheless, the report's authors rebuke all countries, including Israel, for the community treatment of different chronic diseases like asthma. This disorder should be efficiently treated by a family doctor or pediatrician (in other words, in HMOs), and yet 52 out of 100,000 adults aged 15 and up were admitted to hospitals for asthma in OECD countries in 2009.

Hospital admission rates for asthma in Israel are even higher, standing at 68 per 100,000 adults. Hospital admission rates for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are also higher in Israel, standing at 229 per 100,000 adults compared to the OECD average of 198.

Obesity rate lower than world average

When it comes to obesity, Israelis have a reason to be proud. According to the report, obesity rates have doubled and even tripled in many countries since 1980. In more than half of the countries, more than half of the population is overweight, with the United States ranking first.

The lowest obesity rates were recorded in Japan and Korea, while the Israeli average stood at 14% in 2009 – lower than the world average of 17%.

State participates in 58% of health expenses

In light of the encouraging figures on life expectancy and mortality from diseases in Israel, the public and private spending on healthcare make comes as a surprise. The country with the highest healthcare spending in 2009 was the US, with $7,960 per capita, 2.5 more than the OECD average.

In Israel, on the other hand, healthcare spending per capita is 30% lower than the OECD average, totaling $2,164 in 2009. In addition, the per capita spending in fixed prices from 2000 to 2009 increased by only 1.5%, less than the average growth of 4% in OECD countries.

The national healthcare spending in Israel was also relatively low in 2009, totaling 79% of the GDP, compared to a 9.6% average in OECD countries. The highest rates were in the US (17.4%), Holland (12%) and France (11.8%).

And who funds healthcare spending in Israel? According to the report, only 58% of healthcare spending in 2009 was financed by the State – lower than the OECD average of 72% that year.

http://www.niw.nl/geen-excuses-van-opstelten/

Stop ignoring the facts about Cast Lead

It featured the lowest ratio of civilian to combatant deaths in any asymmetric conflict in the history of warfare.

Three years ago, Operation Cast Lead saw Israel send troops into the Gaza Strip in response to the thousands of rockets and mortars launched into Israeli civilian areas. Which other government in the world wouldn't defend its citizens in such circumstances? If some wish to portray this operation as a "massacre", they would have to ignore the facts to do so.

John Stuart Mill wrote in 1862 that "war is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things". Indeed today, even with laws, regulations and technology intended to lessen the horrors of battle, war is always ugly and tragic. But sometimes, it is still an essential response to something far uglier.

In 2006, following the Israeli disengagement and pullout from the Gaza Strip, there was an increase of 436 per cent in the number of Palestinian rockets launched towards Israel from that very territory. For some time, Israel resisted a large-scale military response to such acts deliberately aimed at civilians. As a result, the attacks got worse, and every country, including Israel, has the moral responsibility to defend its people from such actions.

Increased Palestinian terror attacks from Gaza were the cause of Operation Cast Lead. Yet Israel's is a conscript army. Indeed Israel goes to extraordinary lengths to protect its young soldiers (witness the efforts make to secure the release of the kidnap victim Gilad Shalit), and does not send them to war easily.

In the three years since the operation, there has been an unprecedented 72 per cent decline in the number of rockets launched from Hamas-controlled Gaza. No surprise, then, that Israel's Defence Forces Chief of Staff should call the operation "an excellent operation that achieved deterrence for Israel vis-a-vis Hamas". (However, that deterrence is still not enough to have prevented Palestinians from launching 1,571 rockets since the operation, including one attack with an anti-tank missile on a clearly identifiable Israeli school bus.)

Just as Israel's erection of a security fence to prevent homicide bombers from infiltrating Jerusalem saw a bigger than 90 per cent reduction in such attacks, Operation Cast Lead was undeniably effective in reducing terror attacks from the Gaza strip. The numbers speak for themselves.

Colonel Richard Kemp, former commander of British troops in Afghanistan, hasrepeatedly commented that, "during its operation in Gaza, the Israeli Defence Forces did more to safeguard the rights of civilians in a combat zone than any other army in the history of warfare." Furthermore, he points out that the steps taken in that conflict by the Israeli Defence Forces to avoid civilian deaths are shown by a study published by the United Nations to have resulted in, by far, the lowest ratio of civilian to combatant deaths in any asymmetric conflict in the history of warfare.

Kemp explains that by UN estimates, the average ratio of civilian to combatant deaths in such conflicts worldwide is 3:1 -- three civilians for every combatant killed. That is the estimated ratio in Afghanistan. But in Iraq, and in Kosovo, it was worse: the ratio is believed to have been 4:1. Anecdotal evidence suggests the ratios were very much higher in Chechnya and Serbia. In Gaza, it was less than one-to-one.

Since the 22-day Gaza operation, Israel has also been demonstrably fastidious in its efforts to protect civilian lives while targeting combatants. The Israel correspondent for Jane's Defence Weekly sites Israel's record this year, saying "the IDF killed 100 Gazans in 2011. Nine were civilians. That is a civilian-combatant ratio of nearly 1:10."

In fact, Israel's effort to combat the Hamas regime in the Gaza strip, while still safeguarding the rights of civilians, can be seen in her actions away from the battlefield as well. Despite the continued and sustained terror attacks from the area, around 60 per cent of Gaza's electricity comes from Israel, rather than from Gaza's other neighbour, Egypt, against whom no missiles are launched by the Palestinians.

Israel allows thousands of tonnes of goods to pass into Gaza weekly, and provides a large amount of the strip's water. If destroying infrastructure were truly Israel's aim, as some claim, this goal could be achieved without the risk to Israeli soldiers inherent in operations which see them sent into the Gaza strip.

It is time to stop blaming the Israeli government and defence forces for protecting Israeli civilians. Instead, we must demand that Palestinian leaders (and their apologists) work towards improving the welfare of their own citizens, rather than constantly attacking Israel's.

Schandaal: prenatale zorg in Israel is prima geregeld (IMO)

IMO Blog

Israel's right-wing is trying to stifle the reality of Palestinian demographics
Palestinian Authority's Central Bureau of Statistics says number of Palestinians and Israeli Jews will be equal by 2015.
By Barak Ravid

Every year, in almost every country, government reports detailing statistics and demographics of the country's citizens are published during the last week of December. The reports detail how many babies were born that year and how many people died.

Some of those reports are turned into semi-comic articles on the back page of the newspaper, or discussed on current event radio programs, and sometimes they are simply thrown to the wastebasket.

Last week, the Palestinian Authority's Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) published its report summarizing 2011. As one could expect, the conclusions of the report barely rose to Israeli consciousness, and the media almost completely ignored the findings. But a brief look over the report shows a worrying picture, which raises hopes that at least some of the government ministers were exposed to the statistics.

The report revealed that the number of Palestinians in the territories stands at about 4.2 million people: 2.6 million in the West Bank and 1.6 million in the Gaza Strip. Added to them are about 1.4 million Palestinians who are Israeli citizens and about 5.6 million Palestinians that belong to the Arab countries and the rest of the world.

Three days after the Palestinian Authority's statistics was published, the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) released its own report summarizing 2011. According to that report, the number of Israelis stands at 7.8 million people: 5.9 Jews, 1.6 million Arabs and 325,000 defined as "others."

A conclusion of the findings shows that the number of Jews and Palestinians between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea are almost even. According to the Palestinian Authority's CBS there are about 300,000 more Jews than Palestinians, while according to the Israeli CBS that number stands at 100,000.

What is especially disconcerting is the bottom line of the Palestinian Authority's report. "On the basis of the estimations presented by the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics in 2010, and provided that natural growth remains unchanged, the number of Palestinians and Jews will become equal and stand at 6.3 million [each] by the end of 2015," it said. "In addition, by 2020 the number of Palestinians living in historical Palestine will stand at 7.2 million people, while the number of Jews will stand at only 6.8 million."

One can only hope that in light of the meeting Tuesday between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's personal emissary Isaac Molho and chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat in Amman, that Netanyahu was exposed to this data. When I read through the report I was reminded of a briefing Netanyahu gave to diplomatic correspondents in Washington in September 2010, hours after the launch of the direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Those negotiations lasted exactly three weeks before they collapsed.

Netanyahu spoke of the importance of attempting to reach an agreement with the Palestinians and also pointed out the issue of demographics. "We do not want to rule over one and a half million Palestinians in Judea and Samaria," he had said. A number of reporters then reminded him that the number stands at almost 2.5 million Palestinians. He nodded and continued speaking.

Netanyahu's words during that briefing represented the right-wing approach, according to which any demographic problem is far less serious than the picture that the Israeli left-wing is trying to paint. The "guru" at the head of this approach is Yoram Ettinger, who served at numerous posts in the Foreign Ministry in the past, including that of Minister for Congressional Affairs in Israel's embassy in Washington. Ettinger knows Netanyahu well, and the two have been in close contact for many years.

Ettinger actually read the Palestinian Authority's CBS report, but completely rejects it. He nicknamed the report "a misrepresentation of demographics". According to Ettinger, the Palestinians publish misleading reports every few years in order to scare Israel. He is sure the PA is "inflating" the numbers of Arabs in the West Bank by 1 million people. This is probably where Netanyahu got his 1.5 million Palestinians in the West Bank figure from. In Gaza, Ettinger asserts, the numbers are inflated by 300,000 people. Similarly, Ettinger points out, the Palestinians "inflate" their birth rate and ignore the sharp increase in Jewish demographics.

The chances that the meeting between Molho and Erekat in Amman this afternoon will not end in failure are slim. The chances that their meeting will lead to a renewal of the peace process are nil. Based on this depressing state of affairs, the demographic data of the Palestinian Authority's CBS are an even greater cause for concern.
