Hamas heeft afgelopen maanden duizenden raketten gemaakt en ontvangen

In de Hebreeuwse editie van Haaretz stond gisteren een alarmerend bericht:

 

Hamas zou de afgelopen duizenden raketten hebben ontvangen en gemaakt, met een bereik van 30 km, waardoor een aantal Israelische steden binnen 'striking range' liggen. Terecht merkt Aaron Lerner op dat het niet alleen ondoenlijk, maar ook niet voldoende is om gebouwen en appartementencomplexen te verzwaren/beschermen/raketveilig te maken. Hij staat een grote militaire operatie voor, maar dit soort raketten, opgeslagen in woonwijken, zijn niet te vernietigen zonder dat daarbij vele, vele doden vallen.

It is clear to the IDF that Hamas has received and manufactured thousands of additional rockets in the last months, some with a relatively long range. "It is possible to fortify Nachal Oz, maybe even Sderot," says a senior officer, "but what about Ashkelon? And beyond that, what about Ashdod and Kiryat Gat?

If Hamas received, as we suspect, rockets with a range of 30 kilometers, then these are also within striking range.  But if we start to reinforce multistory buildings in Ashkelon we will never finish.

On the other hand, if the rocket threat isn't removed, it is clear to us that the civilians will demand that the state does exactly that,"

Question: Why the working assumption that it would be acceptable for Israeli civilians within the extended striking range of the Gaza Strip to live out their lives restricted to the safety of their apartments?

What about destroying the Palestinian rocket threat instead of pouring billions of dollars in partial protection?
