Bethlehem - Ma'an - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will ask Syria to cancel a summit it has planned in protest of the Annapolis peace conference in November, an Abbas aide said Sunday.
Aide Nimir Hammad said Abbas will send a high level delegation, including former Palestinian Legislative Council Speaker Rawhi Fattouh, to Damascus to officially request the suspension of the alternative summit, which Hammad says will worsen the intra-Palestinian conflict.
Some Palestinian factions, such as Islamic Jihad, have announced that they will attend the Damascus summit in protest of the US-convened international conference in Annapolis. US officials plan to exclude the Hamas-controlled government in the Gaza Strip from the Annapolis meeting.
The Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday will ask Syria officially to cancel the Palestinian factions' conference scheduled to be held in Syria in protest against the US-sponsored peace conference in November, said Abbas aide Nimir Hammad.
Hammad said the conference would only harm Syria's position because it implies opposition to the Arab League Peace Initiative, which is in part the basis for planned negotiations in Annapolis.
