Analysis: Yusuf al-Qaradawi – a 'man for all seasons'

Addressing millions in Tahrir, cleric who has supported suicide bombings in Israel calls for pluralistic democracy in Egypt.

A disparate mix of Egyptians packed into Cairo's Tahrir Square for Friday's prayer service-cum-political rally: young and old, secular and devout, Muslims and Christians.

At least a million people filled the now-emblematic square, but the event was most remarkable for the presence of one man – Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, arguably the most influential Sunni Muslim cleric in the world, making his first public appearance in Egypt in 50 years.

"Don't fight history," he urged the assembled crowd, and the millions more watching the televised address live. "You can't delay the day when it starts. The Arab world has changed."

As often in the past, Qaradawi spoke of democracy and pluralism. He urged the army officers temporarily ruling Egypt to deliver on their promises of handing power to a civil government founded on principles of pluralism and freedom, and cleanse the cabinet of former Mubarak cronies.

"Don't let anyone steal this revolution from you – those hypocrites who will put on a new face that suits them," he said. "The revolution isn't over. It has just started to build Egypt… guard your revolution."

Born in 1926 to a devout peasant family in the Nile Delta, Qaradawi had memorized the Koran by age nine and later enrolled at Cairo's Al-Azhar University, the foremost theological institution in the Sunni world.

By the 1940s and '50s, he had fallen afoul of Egypt's secular rulers, and was imprisoned three times in the country before fleeing for Qatar in 1961.

His professed embrace of progressive values has earned the cleric a reputation as a moderate.

"Qaradawi is very much in the mainstream of Egyptian society. He's in the religious mainstream, he's not offering something that's particularly distinctive or radical in the context of Egypt," Shadi Hamid, research director at the Brookings Institute's Doha Center in Qatar, told the Christian Science Monitor on Friday.

"He's an Islamist and he's part of the Brotherhood school of thought, but his appeal goes beyond the Islamist spectrum, and in that sense he's not just an Islamist figure, he's an Egyptian figure with a national profile."

Qaradawi is widely seen as a source of intellectual inspiration for the banned Muslim Brotherhood. As a young religious scholar, he was a follower of the movement's founder, Hassan al- Banna, and has long been a member of the organization.

Twice – in 1976 and 2004 – he turned down offers to lead it.

In 2006 he told the Brotherhood website IkhwanWeb that the Islamist group "asked me to be a chairman, but I preferred to be a spiritual guide for the entire nation."

Today he is best known in the Arab world for his program Shari'a and Life, broadcast on Al-Jazeera to an estimated audience of 40 million. A 2008 Foreign Policy magazine poll put Qaradawi third on its worldwide list of public intellectuals.

In his 2001 article for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, "Al- Qaradawi: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," Reuven Paz noted the contradictory nature of the cleric's statements.

He was one of the first Islamic scholars to have condemned the September 11 attacks – but has supported attacks on US forces in Iraq and suicide bombings against Israelis.

"There is no enmity between Muslims and Jews," he told rabbis from the radical anti-Zionist sect Neturei Karta visiting Qatar in 2008. "Jews who believe the authentic Torah are very close to Muslims," he said, adding that "Muslims are against the expansive, oppressive Zionist movement, not the Jews."

On several other occasions, however, the cleric has made comments critics denounced as anti-Semitic incitement.

"Oh Allah, take this oppressive, Jewish Zionist band of people. Oh Allah, do not spare a single one of them," he said during the Gaza War in January 2009, in remarks translated by the press monitoring organization MEMRI. "Oh Allah, count their numbers, and kill them, down to the very last one."

Later that month, he said on his Al-Jazeera program, "Throughout history, Allah has imposed upon the Jews people who would punish them for their corruption.

The last punishment was carried out by Hitler. By means of all the things he did to them – even though they exaggerated this issue – he managed to put them in their place. This was divine punishment for them.

"Allah willing, the next time will be at the hand of the believers."

In a 2005 BBC interview, Qaradawi said of suicide bombings: "Allah Almighty is just; through his infinite wisdom he has given the weak a weapon the strong do not have, and that is their ability to turn their bodies into bombs, as Palestinians do." In the same interview, he said, "I consider this type of martyrdom operation as an evidence of God's justice."

Qaradawi's stance on Jewish claims to holy sites in Jerusalem is unambiguous. In a 2004 statement about the Western Wall on Islam- Online, the website he founded, he wrote: "The Jews' claim to Al-Buraq Wall [dates back] only to recent times. The longest reign of the Jews lasted for 434 years. Their reign in Palestine dates back to the times of Kings Saul, David and Solomon.

"Solomon's sons split after his decease: Jude [sic] headed for Jerusalem while the state of Israel was established in Shakim, that is Nablus. The Jewish state in Nablus lasted for 298 years and the former for 434.

This is the longest period that the Jews reigned. So those who claim that they have a long history in Israel are liars."

Close observers say that, more than anything, the cleric is shrewd.

"Qaradawi's ability to be 'the man for all seasons,'" Paz wrote, "should not mislead the West in its efforts to attract Arab states into positive support for the coalition against global jihad."

The Jerusalem Post
PA: We'll turn to UN General Assembly to stop settlements
By KHALED ABU TOAMEH
02/19/2011 17:38
http://www.jpost.com/International/Article.aspx?id=208925

Palestinians call for "day of rage" to protest against US decision to veto UNSC resolution condemning settlements as illegal.

Palestinians on Saturday called for a "day of rage" next Friday to protest against the US Administration's decision to veto a United Nations Security Council resolution that would have condemned Israel for building in the settlements.

Expressing outrage over Friday's veto, the Palestinian Authority threatened to reassess its position toward the Middle East peace process. The PA said it was now considering going to the UN General Assembly with a request to issue a similar resolution condemning construction in the settlements.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas came under heavy pressure from the US Administration to withdraw the resolution, but refused to comply, a senior PA official in Ramallah said.

Abbas, meanwhile, was more cautious in his response to the US veto. He told a group of Palestinian academics on that Palestinian diplomacy had scored a real victory after 14 members of the Security Council had voted in favor of the controversial resolution.

He said that the PA had faced immense pressure to withdraw the resolution, but chose to put the interests of the Palestinians above all considerations.

"We are not seeking to boycott the US Administration and it's not in our interest to boycott anyone," Abbas stressed. "But just want to protect the legitimate rights and interests of our people in accordance with international law."

Hamas calls veto 'immoral'

Hamas on Saturday described the US step as an "immoral behavior and a disregard of the international community."

Hamas added in its statement that the veto shows the American administration's bias towards the "occupation."

Hamas urged the Palestinian Authority to stop all forms of security coordination with Israel.

Obama warns Abbas against resolution

US President Barack Obama phoned Abbas hours before the Security Council session on Friday and urged him to withdraw the resolution, which was presented on behalf of the PA by a number of Arab countries, the official said.

In response, Abbas called an emergency meeting of the PLO Executive Committee and the Fatah Central Committee to discuss what some officials described as Obama's "threats."

The two committees rejected Washington's demand and gave the PA leadership a green light to go ahead and bring the resolution for a vote to the Security Council.

The committees also called on the US to refrain from vetoing the resolution, saying the Palestinians would not succumb to pressure from any party.

PLO Secretary-General Yasser Abed Rabbo said that in addition to Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and some EU leaders also attempted to persuade the PA to withdraw the resolution, but to no avail.

Hanna Amireh, member of the PLO Executive Committee, said that the Palestinian leadership had unanimously rejected US and EU pressure regarding the resolution. He said that the Palestinians were determined to pursue their diplomatic efforts to hold Israel responsible for the failure of the peace talks.

PA leadership organizes street protests in support of position

The PA leadership also organized street protests in support of its position. Dozens of Fatah activists demonstrated in Ramallah, Kalkilya, Hebron and Jenin and condemned the US for being "biased" in favor of Israel.

The protesters hailed Abbas for resisting American pressure to withdraw the resolution against the settlements.

Some Palestinians, including Tawfik Tirawi, a former Fatah security commander, called for organizing a "day of rage" against the US next Friday.

Tirawi said that the veto "exposed America's real face and the extend to which it is biased in favor of oppression and occupation."

In response to reports that the US had threatened to cut off financial aid to the PA if it insisted on presenting the resolution to the Security Council, Fatah spokesman Ahmed Assaf said that the Palestinians "want to get rid of occupation and are not only waiting to earn their living."

The US Administration should support the Palestinians and not block freedom and independence, Assaf said. He added that Fatah was planning more anti-US demonstrations in the West Bank in the coming days.

A statement issued by the Fatah leadership in the West Bank criticized the US Administration for allegedly threatening to cut off financial aid to the Palestinians.

"US threats to cut off the aid shows that that the Americans are ignorant of our people's moral and national values and aspirations," the statement read. "The US veto is a victory for occupation and settlements."

Fatah said that the veto harmed Washington's status as a major broker in the peace process and encourages Israel to continue building in the settlements.

Hamas also condemned the US veto, saying it exposed Washington's bias in favor of Israel.

"The US veto is an award to the occupation government for its violations against the Palestinians," said Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum.

Stabiliteit

Arabieren in Israel welteverstaan.

"[The veto] proves for the thousandth time that Obama is worse than his predecessor Bush in his loyalty to Israel, his bias and double standards on the Middle East conflict, and in ignoring the ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people, land and holy places," Sarsour wrote.

Angry Arab MK: 'Obama can go to hell'

Ibrahim Sarsour says Arab world should punish US economy after the US vetoes UNSC resolution condemning settlements.

US President Barack Obama betrayed the Palestinians and the Arab world by instructing the American delegation to the United Nations to veto a Security Council resolution condemning Jewish settlements in the West Bank as illegal, United Arab List MK Ibrahim Sarsour wrote in an open letter to Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas Saturday.

In the letter, Sarsour accused Obama of surrendering to Israel, blind bias toward the Jewish state and directing undue pressure and threats against the Palestinian leadership.

"After the exposure of lies from the US, we must say frankly to Obama: You no longer scare us and you can go to hell," Sarsour wrote.

"Obama cannot be trusted. We knew his promises were lies. The time has come to spit in the face of the Americans."

Sarsour condemned former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali as American agents in the Middle East.

He was more forgiving when it came to former US president George W. Bush.

"[The veto] proves for the thousandth time that Obama is worse than his predecessor Bush in his loyalty to Israel, his bias and double standards on the Middle East conflict, and in ignoring the ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people, land and holy places," Sarsour wrote.

In an interview with The Jerusalem Post Saturday night, Sarsour said that all Israelis should be upset with how Obama has handled the Middle East conflict. He said the UN decision was bad for Israel in the long run, because it would mislead Israelis into thinking that there was not a consensus that the settlements violate international law and are an obstacle to peace.

"We had hope in Obama but his unwavering defense of Israel has left him in an unexplainable coma when it comes to the peace process," Sarsour said. "He gave into threats from Jews in Congress and stopped seeking true peace, so we have no choice but to tell him that he is no longer wanted in the Middle East and that he can go to hell.

The Arab world should persuade the US to change its Middle East policies by any means necessary, including by use of economic pressure."

By contrast, even the MKs on the Right that are usually the most critical of the president of the United States praised Obama on Saturday night.

"I welcome his veto and I hope that it will be the start of a new, pro-Israel Obama for the first time since he took office, though I have my doubts," Likud MK Danny Danon said.

Halve Commissie Buitenlandse Zaken bezoekt Midden-Oosten

Commissie Buitenlandse Zaken bezoekt Midden-Oosten

* Dhr. H.J. Ormel (CDA; delegatieleider)

* Dhr. A. Nicolaï (VVD)

* Dhr. R. De Roon (PVV)

* Dhr. J. Voordewind (ChristenUnie)

* Dhr. K. Van der Staaij (SGP)

Overdag Palestijnse mensenrechtenactivist, 'snachts terrorist?

Al Haq - Received SEK 3.2 million between 2006 - 2010, as part of Diakonia's IHL program (also funded by NDC - see below). Al Haq is a leader of the "lawfare" movement, initiating lawsuits in Canada and the UK, and preparing "ready-to-be-used case files" for use against Israeli officials in foreign courts. Al Haq lists boycotts among its goals and objectives, and lobbied the EU to annul the upgrade of EU-Israel bilateral relations. General Director Shawan Jabarin has been denied exit visas by Israel and Jordan on account of his alleged ties to the Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror group. Co-founder Charles Shamas is a member of the Middle East-North Africa advisory board of Human Rights Watch, and has "advised the PLO/PNA on IHL-related diplomacy," and publically compares Israeli policy to "apartheid" and "genocide."

NGO Monitor: HRW Appoints 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' to MidEast Advisory Board

February 16, 2010

HRW Appoints 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'
to MidEast Advisory Board
Shawan Jabarin Appointment Infers Illegitimacy of Israeli Supreme Court

JERUSALEM – Signaling the continuing decline of the organization, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has appointed Shawan Jabarin, an alleged senior activist in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist organization, to its Middle East Advisory Board. This appointment, as first reported in the Daily Beast, is further evidence of the moral collapse and corruption in HRW, says Jerusalem-based NGO Monitor, a research institution that tracks NGOs.

"This appointment ends any façade that Human Rights Watch is a moral 'watchdog' organization," says Prof. Gerald Steinberg, president of NGO Monitor. "Mr. Jabarin has ties to the PFLP terror group, which specialized in aircraft hijackings and carries out suicide bombings and political assassinations. He also heads an organization, Al Haq, which is among the leaders of delegitimization campaigns targeting Israel. This appointment is a slap in the face from HRW Executive Director Ken Roth and Chairman James Hoge to terror victims, Israelis, Jews, and others who seek to uphold universal human rights."

With this appointment, HRW blatantly disregards decisions by the Israeli Supreme Court and other countries that have affirmed Jabarin's terror links. Jordan also has denied him exit visas because of his alleged ties to the PFLP.

As reported by NGO Monitor, the Israeli Supreme Court in June 2007 referred to Jabarin as a "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," a human rights worker by day and a terrorist by night. In 2008, the Supreme Court upheld a visa denial because of his terror connections.

"By appointing Jabarin, HRW has contemptuously dismissed the widely respected Israeli Supreme Court" Steinberg adds. "The assault on the courts is a key component of the strategy of demonizing Israel, as developed at the NGO Forum of the 2001 Durban Conference. HRW played a central role in Durban, and this is another step in the organization's implementation of this strategy."

This appointment is the latest of numerous moral failings, scandals and biases that have exposed HRW as a political advocacy organization. In May 2009, as NGO Monitor exposed, Middle East and North Africa (MENA) division director Sarah Leah Whitson went to Saudi Arabia to raise funds, selling the message that HRW counters "pro-Israel pressure groups." Last year, the revelation of HRW "senior military analyst" Marc Garlasco's Nazi memorabilia obsession further damaged the organization's credibility. (Garlasco was fired, but an investigation never occurred.)

"Unfortunately, Jabarin's appointment is the latest and most egregious immoral act for an organization that already lost its moral compass," adds Steinberg. "HRW founder Robert Bernstein has denounced the biases and failures of his own organization, lamenting the organization's failure to hold accountable closed societies and oppressive regimes. The appointment of an individual with ties to terror reinforces Mr. Bernstein's assessment of HRW."

As donations decreased amid the scandals, George Soros rescued HRW with a 10-year, $100 million donation. Mr. Soros also funds Al Haq.

"Perhaps Mr. Soros and his cohorts should reevaluate their contributions, particularly as these groups strengthen ties with individuals linked to terror," Steinberg adds. "This is the antithesis of advancing universal human rights."

Revolutie in Bahrein kan problematisch zijn

Bahrain's revolution more problematic

http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/2011/02/bahrains-revolution-more-problematic.html

The protests in Bahrain are not the same as in Egypt or Tunisia. Rather than protesting rising prices or freedom, it appears that the Bahrain protests are mostly by the Shiite majority against the ruling Sunnis.

But it is not as if Bahrain is a wasteland of human rights. It actually has one of the best human rights records of any Arab country and it has a diverse population. Bahrain even publicly called for the Jews who fled the country to come back. (It is not thrilled with gays, though.)

In fact, the major Shiite party wants to have more discrimination! From Wikipedia:
Al Wefaq, Bahrain's main Shia Islamist opposition party, has for several years tried to introduce racial segregation, calling for the removal of third world immigrants from predominately Bahraini areas. In 2004, the head of Manama City Council, Al Wefaq's Murthader Bader, called for the introduction of racial segregation in the city with the removal of South Asian nationals to other parts of the country.
So far, this has not morphed into an anti-US protest, but Bahrain is the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, and concern is rising there. The Fifth Fleet helps keep the Gulf safe from disruptions of oil shipments that have been threatened by Al Qaeda - and Iran.

Iran is of course supporting the Shiites and denouncing the ruling government. Iran considers Bahrain to be a part of Iran proper and an Iranian takeover of the country to "redeem" it is not out of the question.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is very nervous and there are reports that it has sent its own tanks in to help Bahrain fight the protesters. Saudi Arabia has many Shiites that live in areas of the country where oil is pumped, and a revolution that spreads to the kingdom could be disastrous to the world energy supply.

The knee-jerk reaction to support every seemingly popular revolution can have far-reaching consequences.

During the last few months, we have witnessed some bizarre conspiracy stories in the Arab world. Towards the end of last year some in Egypt called the shark attacks on tourists in the Sinai Peninsula a Mossad plan. This was closely followed last month by the "arrest" of a vulture in Saudi Arabia as an alleged Israeli agent. Unfortunately, these are just two recent examples of those in our region that identify Israel's hand in almost everything that happens in the Middle East.

While these conspiracy theories have long been part of an authoritarian diversionary tactic from the true ills of their societies, some in the West are led by this Israel-blinkered trend, if not the actual details.

While few European or American analysts believed or paid any credence to these Zionist Dr. Doolittle stories, some still see every event in the Middle East, minor or major, as connected to Israel. Many of these analysts are so preoccupied with Israel or the so-called "Middle East conflict", a term that ignores or dismisses all other conflicts in the region as irrelevant and non-newsworthy, that they have no understanding of the region beyond Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

One would think that the recent events in Tunisia, Cairo, Yemen and elsewhere would demand soul-searching and humility on the part of these talking-heads who pontificate from their comfortable think-tanks and self-appointed analyst positions in Washington, London and Brussels.

Some of these analysts have not amended their tired and outdated thinking even after the recent events, merely stating the relationship of the unrest to Israel and the peace process. They have become the dinosaurs of international affairs and foreign policy analysis and will not be shaken from their ideological foundations by facts that contradict their thinking.

Many of these analysts, some who claim experience in Middle East affairs, like those who claim to have been part of a peace process negotiating team when they did little more than make the tea, lack a keen understanding of the region. They fundamentally ignored the UNDP Human Development Report for Arab states report in 2009 which was a virtual roadmap for the events that took place during the last few weeks.

This report stated that the Arab world is lacking in all areas of human development, such as freedom, women empowerment and education. In addition, nearly 40% of the Arab world lives below the international poverty line. For the Arab world to merely maintain its current position, which is at the lowest rung on the development ladder, it will need to create 51 million jobs in the next ten years.

The report, co-authored by Arab scholars was a scream in the dark for many western analysts to wake up and face the very real problems affecting the Arab world. In addition, the free Arab press relates to these issues on a daily basis. However, this patronizing and perhaps even chauvinistic approach by some analysts tells the people of the region what they should be thinking rather than learning and listening.

Nevertheless, they cling to the tired and discredited claim that building a few apartments in Ariel is what drives the so-called "Arab street" to distraction. For those who don't read Arabic, many of those demonstrating in their capital cities wrote slogans in English to give a voice to their frustrations that the rest of the world could understand.

I didn't see any signs about settlements, the Palestinians or the stalemate in the peace process on the streets of Tunis, Sanaa or Cairo. The few signs that did mention Israel were so monstrously antisemitic that they can be dismissed as the rantings of those who can not tolerate a Jewish presence anywhere in the Middle East and are hardly interested in any sort of peace process.

If this ideological indifference to the wider Middle East beyond the borders of Israel, which makes up around one seven hundredth of the total area of the Arab world, were contained solely within research institutes and academia then perhaps it wouldn't be so dangerous.

However, these analyses are determining the thought processes of the decision-makers and opinion-shapers who scrambled for a coherent policy to a situation that they knew far too little about.

For a few short weeks the world was shown that there is a wider Middle East beyond the western Mashriq and that the hundreds of millions of Arabs of the region do not vent their frustration at Israeli policy, but rather seek to better their lives in a region where greater human development is urgently necessary.

The recent debate about what is more important, security and stability or democracy and freedom, is irrelevant. We hope that the region will reach a point where all elements are satisfied. This can only be achieved if we focus on the Middle East as a whole and not look for simplistic and one-dimensional solutions for all the ills of the Middle East through Jerusalem.

To ensure this the dinosaurs, those who did not have the basic framework to understand the recent events or have not adapted to the new reality and are still quixotically searching for Israeli sharks and vultures in every Middle Eastern event, must be challenged.

Only then can the trials and tribulations of the region, of which there are many, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, be properly identified and resolved.

"Against us stood the most intelligent people on earth ? a people that controls the international press, the world economy and world finances. We succeeded in compelling the Jews to do what we wanted; we received all our land back, up to the last grain of sand! We have outwitted them, and what have we given them in return? A piece of paper ... We have established sophisticated machinery to control and limit to the minimum contacts with the Jews."

Under that system, Israeli leaders would visit Egypt, but Mubarak, with the exception of Rabin's funeral in 1995, never reciprocated. The resident Egyptian ambassador was embraced by Israel's social set; Israel's ambassador to Cairo was treated as a diplomatic leper. Egyptian intellectuals who explored ties with Israel were visited by Mubarak's Mukhabarat ? a serious disincentive to continued contacts.
Egypt used every international forum to condemn Israel, and allowed anti-Semitism to flourish in the local press and in government-controlled media, as per the recent charge that Israeli GPS-guided sharks were working to destabilize Egyptian tourism. When occasionally pressed on the matter of incitement, Mubarak would disingenuously argue that his country had a free press.

Israel could become the scapegoat of Egypt's new democracy
We do not fear Egyptian democracy; we fear people who believe that Israel and its interests are dispensable for the 'greater good,' such as Egyptian democracy.

By Amiel Ungar

It was discomfiting, in recent days, to have Israel and, specifically, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, portrayed as shareholders in Mubarak, Inc., and to see the ex-ruler described as Israel's ally. Actually, the originator of the thesis that Arab dictatorships could promote peace was none other than Yitzhak Rabin, who argued that Arab strongmen could rein in terrorism more efficiently than Israel.

They didn't have to contend with judicial intervention and human rights meddlers. Arab leaders, treated with indulgence because, after all, boys will be boys, could employ the requisite brutality against terrorism in their countries, while the enlightened world would be aghast at far less repressive tactics employed by Israel.

This mode of thinking is perpetuated by opinion leaders who beseech Israel to make peace with the even more oppressive Syrian hereditary republic of the Assad clan. I fully subscribe to Prof. Efraim Karsh's assessment of Mubarak: "He [Mubarak] has also fostered a culture of virulent anti-Semitism in Egypt, a culture whose premises he himself evidently shares."

Writing in Commentary Magazine in April 2002, the historian cited a passage from Mubarak's speech to students at Cairo University in 1991, in which he gloated over Egypt's victory at Camp David: "Against us stood the most intelligent people on earth - a people that controls the international press, the world economy and world finances.

Egyptian intellectuals who explored ties with Israel were visited by Mubarak's Mukhabarat - a serious disincentive to continued contacts.

I shed no tears for Mubarak, but I have a disagreement with supporters of his overthrow who contend that Israel had no right to be alarmed about a worse alternative, or, like British Foreign Secretary William Hague, lecture us about lowering our belligerence when warning of such an alternative, or about how this is not about Israel.

James Traub, writing in Foreign Policy (February 10), attempted to whitewash the Muslim Brotherhood, though he acknowledged: "The Brothers with whom I spoke were not only anti-Israel, but pro-Hamas. Israel has every reason to fear the prospect of a Muslim Brotherhood government."

Traub, however, argued that the United States and Israel cannot "stand athwart history shouting, 'Stop!' The only possible answer is to accept the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a state of their own."

Egypt's government is an internal Egyptian matter. Israel merely expects that any such government honor the treaty obligations of its predecessor, as pacta sunt servanda (agreements must be kept) is a cornerstone of international law and stable international relations.

The peace with Israel was, as Mubarak correctly acknowledged, the cut-rate price that Egypt paid to get Israel to cede the Sinai and destroy the thriving communities of the Yamit district. Israel signed this one-sided treaty because of peace millenarianism and the pressure applied by that dishonest broker Jimmy Carter, who, as former National Security Council official William Quandt revealed, secretly ganged up on Israel with Egypt. The treaty was the greatest disaster of Menachem Begin's premiership, but at least, as political scientist Dore Gold has pointed out, Begin insisted that the treaty, by way of Article 6, stand on its own, regardless of external events.

We do not fear Egyptian democracy; we fear people like Traub, who believe that Israel and its interests are dispensable for the "greater good," such as Egyptian democracy, and who, when pushed to the wall, are ready to exonerate Egypt's treaty abrogation because Israel insists on certain minimal conditions for Palestinian statehood. By Traub's logic, if the Palestinians had accepted Ehud Barak's or Ehud Olmert's delusional peace offerings in 2000 and 2008, they would be entitled to revoke the deal if they were dissatisfied with the treatment of Arabs in what would be left of Israel - say, in Jaffa or Nazareth.

Mubarak has left a toxic legacy. Even the most competent, altruistic Egyptian government will have to cope with major problems, most notably overpopulation and job creation for a swollen youth cohort. Job creation is no easy matter - ask Barack Obama - particularly for the young, as Jose Zapatero and Nicolas Sarkozy will attest to. I don't suppose that The New York Times' Thomas L. Friedman, with his enthusiasm for things Chinese, will recommend that Egypt, a la China, limit families to one child.

Faced with these difficulties, it will be far easier for an Egyptian leader to blame the Jews. Israel, in its yearning for peace precipitation, has wrongly resigned itself to such spittle, but it does insist that both sides honor the peace.

Otherwise, be kind enough to return the Sinai.

http://www.depers.nl/binnenland/545696/Leegte-na-t-bommetje.html

Door: Peter Wierenga
Gepubliceerd: dinsdag 15 februari 2011 22:42
Update: woensdag 16 februari 2011 07:48

Gerstenfeld: 'Dat is fantasie, zonder enig bewijs!'
