"Zionist" Yeshiva students beat Israeli minister

Tamir 'deeply saddened' by mob behavior during visit to yeshiva

Education minister verbally abused, kicked and spat on by protesters angry with gov't policy in front of Mercaz Harav seminary, site of Thursday's terror attack

"The physical pain I'm feeling now is insignificant; it is the mental anguish that hurts me more," Education Minister Yuli Tamir said just hours after being attacked outside the Mercaz Harav rabbinical seminary in Jerusalem, the site of Thursday's deadly terror attack that left eight Israelis dead.

During her visit to the yeshiva on Sunday Tamir spoke to the students, some of whom told her that they felt the government was not doing enough to fight terror.

Upon leaving the seminary Tamir was verbally attacked by dozens of youths who called out "murderer," "get out of here" and "the Left is to blame for everything." She was also kicked in the back twice.

"I came to console the students and see the scene of the attack for myself. In a matter of seconds we found ourselves surrounded by dozens of rioters who kicked me and spat at me," Tamir recounted. "It reminded me of darker days."

The education minister was eventually whisked away by police officers and security guards.

"I am deeply saddened that people cannot differentiate between a condolence visit and a political one," Tamir said. Earlier the minister told Ynet that "this reminded me of the days before (former Prime Minister Yitzhak) Rabin's murder. It's unfortunate that that there is a public which cannot put limits form itself. I only came to pay my respects to the murdered, not to engage in politics."

Meanwhile it was reported that the seminary has responded negatively to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's request to pay a condolence visit of his own, but sources in the PM's Office are still hopeful.

"It is no secret that there is an ideological rift between Olmert and the yeshiva," a source in the PM's Office said, "but Olmert also said during today's cabinet meeting that no political rift can take away from the respect that he has for the Mercaz Harav yeshiva, the flagship of Religious Zionism. Despite everything, we will further examine the possibility of visiting the yeshiva and decide.

A source close to the yeshiva's directors said they were "not enthused" over the idea of hosting Olmert due to the fact that they believe he is working to divide Jerusalem and "is not fighting terror."

However, the source added that an official decision on the matter has yet to be announced.

"There is no delay, limitation, or suspension of the construction of Jewish neigbhorhoods in East Jerusalem," [housing minister] Boim told Israel Radio.
At Monday's Economics Committee meeting, however, Ma'ayan said that the Housing Ministry has postponed marketing 750 apartments in East Jerusalem's Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood and another 150 apartments in the Har Homa neighborhood.

Boim denied this, however, saying the tenders for the Pisgat Ze'ev construction were in the final stages of coordination with the Jerusalem Municipality, and that the tenders for Har Homa - which he said were for 360 units - would be published soon.

Gal did confirm that he had been ordered to freeze construction in the settlements around Jerusalem, including Efrat, Gush Etzion, Givat Ze'ev, Adam and Beitar Ilit.
MK Uriel Ariel (National Union-National Religious Party), who requested Monday's meeting, said that altogether, the Housing Ministry has halted marketing of some 2,300 apartments in and around Jerusalem.

After the meeting, Ma'ayan told Haaretz that despite this directive, the municipality is moving forward with plans to build some 10,000 apartments in Jewish neighborhoods of East Jerusalem, including Ramot, Ramat Shlomo, Pisgat Ze'ev, Neveh Ya'akov, East Talpiot, Har Homa and Gilo. The largest of these calls for building some 4,000 apartments in Givat Hamatos, in the city's southern section. That plan is currently being discussed by the regional planning and building committee.

Minister: No freeze on Jewish construction in E. J'lem

By Nadav Shragai, Haaretz Correspondent, Haaretz Service and AP

Housing Minister Ze'ev Boim denied Tuesday reports that the government is barring new housing construction for Jews in East Jerusalem, saying Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's order to freeze all construction that does not have his personal approval applies only to the West Bank.

On Monday, Jerusalem city manager Yair Ma'ayan told the Knesset Economics Committee that the government was holding up construction of hundreds of apartments in Jewish neighborhoods of East Jerusalem due to the negotiations with the Palestinians.

"There is no delay, limitation, or suspension of the construction of Jewish neigbhorhoods in East Jerusalem," Boim told Israel Radio.

Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupoliansky also weighed in on the issue Tuesday, saying he "won't allow Jerusalem to be turned into an illegal outpost.

Following the Annapolis conference last fall, several media reports about ongoing construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem angered the Palestinians and Americans. In response, Olmert ordered all building in the settlements frozen, including those settlements that are part of the greater Jerusalem area.

But with regard to East Jerusalem, which was formally annexed to Israel in 1967, he merely ordered that he be kept informed of any building plans, and he recently promised Shas Party Chairman and Industry Minister Eli Yishai that there was no freeze on construction in the capital.

At Monday's Economics Committee meeting, however, Ma'ayan said that the Housing Ministry has postponed marketing 750 apartments in East Jerusalem's Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood and another 150 apartments in the Har Homa neighborhood. In both cases, he said, the ministry told him that Olmert had not yet approved the projects.

Boim denied this, however, saying the tenders for the Pisgat Ze'ev construction were in the final stages of coordination with the Jerusalem Municipality, and that the tenders for Har Homa - which he said were for 360 units - would be published soon.

Dov Gal, deputy director of the Housing Ministry's Jerusalem District, also denied the report, saying there was no order that construction in East Jerusalem needed approval from the government.

But Ma'ayan said that Gal was behind the times - and several Knesset members said that Ma'ayan's statements had been confirmed to them by Boim himself.

In response, the Prime Minister's Office said that construction in East Jerusalem has not been frozen, but because of its diplomatic sensitivity, Olmert has asked to be informed of all building plans there, so that he will not be taken by surprise.

Negative migration

Nir Barkat, who heads the opposition in the Jerusalem city council, told the Economics Committee that the capital continues to suffer from a negative balance of migration, in part because of soaring apartment prices. This conclusion was echoed in a study by the Knesset's research division that was presented to the committee on Monday.

The study also found that while all governments talk about developing Jerusalem, few actually do anything about it.

Barkat, who belongs to Olmert's Kadima Party, also asked Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni to deny recent claims by Palestinian officials that Israel has already agreed to concessions in Jerusalem, including ceding the city's Arab neighborhoods to the Palestinians. Alternatively, if the reports are true, he demanded that she "reveal all the secret agreements on the floor of the Knesset."

Livni's media advisor, Gil Messing, responded that the minister does not comment on reports about her talks with the Palestinians, and therefore refused to either confirm or deny that the future of Jerusalem had been discussed.

But the Palestinian comments increased pressure on Shas to quit the government, as it has repeatedly pledged to leave the moment negotiations on Jerusalem begin.

Shas voorzitter eist einde aan bevriezing bouwplan Oost-Jeruzalem

Haaretz is niet altijd even duidelijk, of eigenlijk spreekt men zichzelf geregeld tegen.

Shas chair demands that PM unfreeze E. J'lem construction plan

By Nadav Shragai, Haaretz Correspondent

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/963257.html

Shas Chairman Eli Yishai has posed Prime Minister Ehud Olmert with a demand to immediately unfreeze the construction of the Kidmat Zion neighborhood in East Jerusalem, near the Arab village of Abu Dis.

The Jewish neighborhood, not yet built, is planned to house 300 apartments.

Shas on Monday credited its party members with the recent government approval granted to the construction of 750 new homes in the West Bank settlement of Givat Ze'ev near Jerusalem.

Several United States officials, including the administration of President George W. Bush, said Monday that continued construction in the East Jerusalem and West Bank settlements hinders the progress of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also urged Israel to reconsider its plan to expand construction in the West Bank.

Several Jewish families who purchased homes from Arab owners already live in the area where the planned Kidmat Zion neighborhood was to be built. Some of the lands in question were purchased at the turn of the century by Haredi Jews. Some of those Jewish-owned lands were later turned over to the Jewish National Fund.

90 percent of the lands within the Abu Dis area are defined as area B territory, where the Palestinian Authority maintains civil jurisdiction, but not military jurisdiction. In those areas under Palestinian control, there are still several hundreds of dunams of land owned by Jews.

In the parts of Abu Dis that fall under the Jerusalem municipality's jurisdiction (some 10 percent of the area) there are also lands owned by Jews. These lands are designated for the future Kidmat Ze'ev project.

Yishai said to Haaretz Tuesday that "Kidmat Zion is located one and a half kilometers from the Western Wall. Any way you look at it - we're talking about Jerusalem. There is no reason to freeze it. After eight people killed [in a terror attack in Jerusalem last Thursday], we should build 100 apartments for every person killed. I have maintained contact with the interior minister, and I will also speak to the prime minister, so that the the construction plan is approved as quickly as possible."

Safawi reiterated his hope for the "early fall of the Zionist regime," which he called – as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did before him – a "cancerous growth".
Safawi further called on all Arab nation to "join the fight" by boycotting all diplomatic and financial ties with Israel.

Some are more equal than others......

Iran issued a new state stamp Monday, carrying the image of slain Hizbullah commander Imad Mugniyah, they claim was assassinated by Israel.

Mugniyah was killed in a Damascus explosion on February 12th.

According to the Iranian news agency Fars the stamp will be "a cultural message of support from the Iranian people to the Lebanese nation against the crimes of the Zionist regime."

The stamp was revealed in an official state ceremony, attended by the heads of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, the Iranian minister of communications, representatives of Hamas, Hizbullah and family members of the Lebanese killed in the Second Lebanon War.

Yehiya Raheem Safawi, the former Revolutionary Guard commander, who is currently the senior military advisor to the Ayatollah Khamenei, said in the ceremony that "Israel must take Hizbullah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah statements seriously."

Following the assassination of Mugniyah, Nasrallah warned of coming attacks on Israeli targets in Israel and around the world.

Meanwhile, Ahmadinejad met Sunday night with Secretary General of the Islamic Jihad Ramadan Abdullah Shallah,

The two reportedly discussed the situation in Gaza Strip, with Ahmadinejad telling Shallah that "resistance is the only way to defeat the Zionists and their patrons."

According to a Sunday night report by the Iranian news agency IRNA, a radical organization called the "Islamic Student Justice Seekers" has put a price on the heads of three of the most senior members of the Israeli security establishment, Ehud Barak, Meir Dagan and Amos Yadlin.

Weinstock: Trotskyist to 'Mizrahi' historian

Nathan Weinstock is not the man he once was. The iconoclastic Trotskyist of the 1970s has had a change of heart about Israel and the Jews, claiming to have ordered all unsold copies of his controversial book, Zionism: false Messiah, to be destroyed. As explained in his Histoires de chiens: la dhimmitude et le conflict israelo-palestinien, he now believes that anti-Jewish racism, viewing Jews as inferior dhimmis, is a key factor driving the Israel-Palestine conflict. Now Weinstock, perhaps under the gentle guidance of his Moroccan-Jewish wife, Micheline, has produced a new book on the Jews in Arab countries, 'Une si longue presence'. Here is the transcript in English of an interview he gave to Information juive (February 2008).

Why do you think that the exodus of nearly all the Jews from Arab countries has been shrouded in silence?

Nathan Weinstock:
Several reasons. First, the Jews themselves were embarrassed (it is not something to be proud of, to be 'cleansed' like so much dirt). They wanted to draw a line over their past. And until recently, many Ashkenazim showed a certain contempt of all things Sephardi. Secondly, they felt 'cornered' by the prevailing, simplistic, politically-correct notion of colonialism. The exodus of the Jews from Arab lands was perceived by progressives as a 'settling of scores' with the effects of colonialism. Add to this the unwritten law that only the West can embody evil. Everything coming from the Third Word must necessarily escape criticism. The exiled Jews would therefore be ill-advised to muddy the waters of the simplistic ideology of the onward march to progress. Sympathy with the Palestinians has only reinforced this tendency.

The conditions in the countries you examine in your book are not comparable. What, if anything, do they have in common?

There is a huge range, geographical as well as chronological. Jews and Muslims lived together over 14 centuries and over three continents. You cannot generalise. On the other hand, one could venture to suggest that the Jewish condition under Islam was one of subjugation as a dhimmi. Humiliation is inherent in being 'protected': this does not exclude periods when Jews thrived under benevolent rulers. But even eminent Jews had an inferior status. For instance, during the Algerian Regency, Christian slaves were last in the pecking order to drink from the public fountains. But they had precedence over the native Jews. The Jew was worth symbolically less than a slave.

Has dhimmitude played a major role in causing the exodus?

I would put it differently. Let's say that anything relating to Jews in the Arab-Muslim world is tainted by their subjugated status. The Arab world finds it extremely difficult fully to recognise religious or national difference. The plight of Copts or Christians in Iraq provide striking examples, to say nothing of the tragedy in Sudan. It was to escape dhimmitude and benefit from (albeit limited) civic equality with Muslim colonial subjects, that the Jews looked to the West. This placed them in an existential impasse, torn between democratic western values and the nationalist Arab awakening that willingly exploited an imported antisemitism and claimed to be founded on Islam. Even the Algerian FLN shunned its original Jewish comrades-in-arms.

Despite (dhimmi) status, there was in certain Arab countries a great symbiosis between Jews and Muslims.

I have been struck and moved by signs of cultural interpenetration which went well beyond tolerating Jewish difference. When Muslim neighbours brought bread and butter during the Maimouna, they too were celebrating the end of Passover. It was not simply an acceptance of the Other's presence, but of mutual relations steeped in respect. In Tunisia, the notables went to the synagogue on Shavuoth to hear Saadia Gaon's commentary on the Ten Commandments in classical arabic. The Geniza of Old Cairo also reveals that Jewish families lived in close proximity with Muslim families in the same building, for instance. There were business partnerships where the Muslim replaced his Jewish associate on Shabbat. Many Jewish merchants in medieval Tunisia preferred to have their business disputes settled by Muslim, rather than Jewish courts. One must jettison all preconceived ideas.

How do explain that UNESCO allowed the Alexandria library (proudly, you say) to exhibit The Protocols of the Elders of Zion as one of the founding texts of the monotheistic religions?

One must not bury one's head in the sand. All international institutions where Muslims are strongly represented suffer from the gangrene of the Jewish conspiracy theory. This is the legacy of Hitler (which the Arab world supported at the time) and of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. The paranoid vision of the Protocols impregnates the Hamas charter, the Ba'athist regime in Syria, Iran and the radical Islamist movements, insidiously contaminating most of the Arab-Muslim world and its acritical leftist admirers.

The Jewish community of Iraq numbered up to 130,000. In 1917, 80,000 of Baghdad's 200,000 inhabitants were Jews. You write that if there was one Jewish community in the Arab world which could legitimately hope to find its place in national life in symbiosis with the surrounding population, it was the Jews of Iraq. Why?

Of all the Jewish communities of Arab lands, that of Iraq was undoubtedly the most deeply integrated. Thanks to the Jews, local literature blossomed, Jewish musicians played traditional music, local Jewish communist activists played a key role against British rule. In the truly Jewish city that was Baghdad, there was reason to believe that the local Jews - who had their reservations about Zionism, even after the terrible Farhoud pogrom of 1941 - would define the contours of harmonious coexistence with the Muslim majority. Nothing of the sort occurred. With hindsight one could say that Kurdish participation in the Armenian genocide and the terrible massacres of the Assyro-Chaldean Christians, as well as the Farhoud itself, were portents of the expulsion of the Jews and the dreadful massacres of the Kurds to come, and in our times, the bloodbath in the name of religion or politics which continues to ravage the country.

What would you say was the situation of the Jews of Iran?
All the reports about the Jews of Iran cannot help but remind one of Eastern Europe in the blackest days of Stalinism. The community's leaders use eulogistical cliches to affirm how happy a Jew is under the regime of the Ayatollahs in the presence of the regime's henchmen, but one senses an anxiety about the future bubbling up. And unlike the Sunni branch of Islam, Sh'ism has also had an obsessive fear of Jewish 'uncleanliness'. The atmosphere is full of menace while this regime persists.

As far as the Jewish community of Morocco is concerned, you are left with a sense of huge loss.

As it happens, my wife and I have a great number of friends and acquaintances of Moroccan Jewish origin. While many Ashkenazim struggle with their identity, I am attracted to the ease with which Jews of Moroccan origin handle and transmit their traditions in spite of their uprooting. Theirs was an exodus which has remained touchingly faithful to its roots and upheld the richness of its culture, but the Moroccan nation has suffered an enormous loss as a result. I wish (the Jews) could build bridges with the Arab-Muslim world of which they were such an integral part.

You believe the Jews of Turkey have survived due to their discretion. Was this not the case in other Islamic countries?

Yes, it's even been the key to their survival. As my friend Jacques Hassoun (who died before his time) wrote about Egypt, "they had to learn to sing less loudly in the synagogues". Although dhimmitude has been formally abrogated, it still haunts the Arab-Muslim cultural sphere and requires the Jew (and indeed the Christian) to 'know their place'. On the streets in Turkey you will note that Jewish community buildings all fly the national flag - as if to affirm their 'Turkishness', to escape being stigmatised and vaunt the secular values of Ataturk. In Turkey, a number of factors have ensured that a substantial Jewish community has survived. However, under the surface, as it were, many community leaders are worried.

What conclusions do you draw from this piece of historical research?

I would say that wonderful examples of Judeo-Arab cultural interchange should give us hope for the future. Alas, the future remains heavily mortgaged to the Israel-Palestine conflict. I am encouraged to see the rise of several young iconoclastic Arab thinkers in the Maghreb. They are not afraid to question the sacred myths of their culture. Israel is not the only country to give rise to a new generation of historians. There is a glimmer of hope for the future.

Feiglin banned from entering Britain

The UK's Home Office has banned Likud central committee member Moshe Feiglin from entering Britain.

A letter sent to Feiglin from the office of Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, and published in this week's Jewish Chronicle, says the minister has excluded him from the country, even though he had no plans to visit.

"I am writing to advise you that following the London bombings in July 2005, the home secretary announced a list of particular activities that would normally lead to a person being excluded or deported from the UK on the grounds that their presence in the country is not conducive to the public good," the letter reads.

The unacceptable activities listed in the two-page letter include "writing, producing, publishing or distributing material; public speaking including preaching; running a Web site and using a position of responsibility" to "foment or justify terrorist violence in furtherance of particular beliefs; seek to provoke others to terrorist acts; foment other serious criminal activity or seek to provoke others to serious criminal acts and foster hatred which might lead to inter-community violence in the UK."

The home secretary concluded that Feiglin should be "excluded" from the UK on the grounds that his presence "would not be conducive to the public good."

According to the Jewish Chronicle, the Home Office would not elaborate on why or how the decision was made. The letter did, however, cite a number of extracts from Feiglin's articles.

In an extract from an article posted on the Arutz Sheva Web site, Feiglin is quoted as saying: "In order to declare that we are right, we have to declare war. It's not the Arabs who are murdering mothers, but those merciful people who gave weapons to the murderers. It's not the Arabs who are burning babies, but the peaceniks who recognized the justice of the Arabs' cause. It's not the cruel people who are bombing us, but the merciful people who showed them mercy. War now! A holy war now."

In another extract, on the Israel Science and Technology homepage, Feiglin is quoted as saying: "The basis of Islam is not the quality of mercy, but of justice. If Christianity bridges the gap between sin and morals by automatic benevolence and absolution (that over long periods were sold by clergy), Islam does this in a far simpler way. It abolishes both benevolence and morals - their holy Muhammad is strong, cruel and deceitful."

These comments brought the leader of the Likud's dissident Jewish Leadership faction "within the scope of the list of unacceptable behaviors," the letter read.

"It is considered that you are seeking to provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred which might lead to inter-community violence in the UK," the letter added.

There is no right to appeal the ban, but such decisions are reviewed every three years.

Feiglin told the Jewish Chronicle: "This is all very strange, because I have no plans to visit Britain either in the short or the long term. I have never been banned from anywhere else, in fact I am giving a lecture in Canada at the end of this month."

Earlier this month, British authorities granted permission to Ibrahim Mousawi, chief foreign new editor for Hizbullah's Al-Manar television station in Lebanon, to enter the UK to participate in a number of political events.

Accused of anti-Semitism and incitement, and recently banned from entering Ireland, his television station aired a 29-part "documentary" in 2004 in which it depicted stereotypical Jews hatching a plot for Jewish world control and domination.

Following the 9/11 attacks, Al-Manar alleged that 4,000 Jewish employees did not turn up to work at the World Trade Center that day and that the attack was masterminded by Israel.

Bovendien worden Hamas activisten in Iran getraind in guerrilla taktieken a la Hezbollah.

PM: There's no cease-fire agreement with Hamas

By Barak Ravid and Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondents, Haaretz Service and Agencies
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/962403.html

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday denied a cease-fire agreement with Hamas, even though Qassam fire and Israel Defense Forces strikes have subsided recently.

Coming out of a meeting with the Czech prime minister, Olmert said that "there is no cease-fire agreement with Hamas, and nor are there direct or indirect talks."

Similarly, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that Israel would continue to operate against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

"The fighting is ongoing and will continue and will at times increase and decrease," he said.

"There is not at this point any agreement," Barak said. "But if today people go to school in Ashkelon without Grad-type [rockets], or sit in Sderot and Sapir College without Qassams, I wouldn't propose complaining about any quiet day, but at any moment in which we need to act, we will."

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri also said Monday that no comprehensive cease-fire had been reached. Hamas officials said their leaders would, however, continue Egyptian-led efforts to secure a truce.

The government recently ordered the IDF to exercise restraint in operations in the Gaza Strip, pursuant to what a senior government official termed new rules of the game forged in the aftermath of last week's military operation in Gaza.

The official credited these rules, under which Israel will not attack Gaza as long as Hamas does not fire at Israel, with the recent lull in violence. Yet at the same time, he charged, they completely contradict last week's cabinet decision, which stated that Israel should keep up the military pressure on Hamas.

The volume of rocket fire from Gaza has declined sharply in recent days: Since last Friday, Palestinians have fired only three Qassam rockets at Israel, compared to some 50 a day during the previous week. The IDF, for its part, has withdrawn all ground troops from the Strip and also halted aerial assaults.

The government official stressed that there is no formal agreement with Hamas. Rather, he said, unofficial rules were formulated during U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's visit last week, via a series of messages, both open and secret, exchanged by Israel and Hamas.

Rice apparently relayed a proposal for resuming the lull that Hamas had transmitted via Egypt, and on her departure last Wednesday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert responded publicly, saying: "If they don't fire Qassams at us, we won't attack in Gaza." Since then, both sides have sharply reduced the volume of fire.

A military source said that while the rules of engagement in Gaza have not officially been altered, "the general trend was made clear to us. For now, we are not really fighting Hamas. There is restraint, even if undeclared. Where things are really heading, we'll know only later."

The senior government official said that in effect, the unofficial ground rules covered three possible scenarios:

* If the rocket fire stops completely, so will IDF operations in Gaza.

* If Palestinians fire only at Sderot and other communities near Gaza, Israel will respond primarily with aerial assaults.

* If rockets hit Ashkelon, Israel will respond with ground operations like last week's, in which over 100 Palestinians were killed.

However, the official warned, "beyond the temporary lull, the new tacit arrangement does not advance Israel toward its goals." This arrangement, he added, "completely contradicts the cabinet's decision [of last week], without proper procedure or cabinet approval."

That decision called for continuing the military pressure on Hamas, in an effort to stop both the rocket fire and the organization's ongoing arms build-up.

"It's very unfortunate," the official added. "We don't gain anything by this. How will this prevent the next clash, or the resumption of Grad [rocket] fire on Ashkelon? Tomorrow, there could be 60 Qassams on Sderot, and we have not advanced one centimeter toward achieving the goals we set for ourselves in the cabinet."

In particular, the official said, the new "rules of the game" do nothing to prevent Hamas's ongoing arms build-up. "Now that a lull has been achieved in practice, the Egyptians have gotten what they want, so they have no motivation to take action against the [arms] smuggling," he argued. "Our lever for pressure has been greatly weakened."

But the Prime Minister's Office denied that any arrangement with Hamas existed. "We hold to our position that if they don't shoot at us, we won't shoot back," a senior official in the office said.

Arabische leider in Jeruzalem ontkent bestaan Joodse tempel

"They want to build their temple at a time when our blood is on their clothes, on their doorsteps, in their food and in their drinks. Our blood has passed from one 'general terrorist' to another 'general terrorist.'"

Arab leader denies temple ever existed

JPost.com Staff , THE JERUSALEM POST

The al-Aqsa mosque was never the site of a Jewish temple, Sheikh Raed Salah, the head of the Islamic Movement's northern branch, said Monday during a press conference he convened in Jerusalem to respond to voices calling for the expulsion of Israeli residents of the city who participate in terror activities against Israel.

"Those calling for the expulsion of Palestinian residents of east Jerusalem are hysterical and stupid and belong in the trash can," Salah said at the conference.
He went on to deny any Israeli or Jewish historical claim to the city, denying that there ever existed a Jewish temple on the Temple Mount.

"The claims of the Jews are big lies and they have no right to any speck of dust here," he said.

Israel, he claimed, was carrying out extensive digs under al-Aqsa mosque, and was hiding destructive tunnels under the compound which had already caused damage to the mosque and several houses in the Muslim Quarter.

"I think that we are at a critical time. We believe that al-Aqsa is in danger and that it is under occupation, and we believe that Jerusalem is in danger because it is under occupation," Salah said. "Jerusalem is not only houses - it is faith, it is history, it is a culture, it is a present, a future and an eternal right that we will not relinquish."

In January, Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz filed an indictment against Salah, charging him with incitement to violence and racism in a speech he made last year protesting the archeological dig carried out at the Old City's Mughrabi Gate.

During his sermon in Jerusalem's Wadi Joz neighborhood on February 16 of last year, Salah urged supporters to start a third intifada in order to "save al-Aksa Mosque, free Jerusalem and end the occupation."

Salah's speech also attacked Jews, saying, "They want to build their temple at a time when our blood is on their clothes, on their doorsteps, in their food and in their drinks. Our blood has passed from one 'general terrorist' to another 'general terrorist.'"

He also said, "We are not those who ate bread dipped in children's blood."

Hamas admits that its fighters are trained in Iran

The Sunday Times March 9, 2008
Marie Colvin, Gaza City
www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article3512018.ece

THE Palestinian group Hamas, blamed for last week's massacre of eight students at a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem, has revealed that hundreds of its fighters have been trained in Iran.

A senior commander interviewed by The Sunday Times said 300 of the group's "best brains" had been secretly sent to Tehran.

Half are still being trained by Revolutionary Guards. They are learning how to make explosives from everyday items and produce deadlier rockets.
The rest have already returned from a Revolutionary Guard base in Tehran. Some have been trained as snipers. Others have learnt to use tunnels in attacks on Israeli forces.

"Iran is our mother," the commander said. "She gives us information, military supplies and financial support."

Seven separate groups of Hamas militants have spent up to six months in Tehran since the training began in 2005.

The scale of Iran's operation exceeds Israeli intelligence suspicions that Hamas had dispatched "tens" of fighters to Tehran. Yuval Diskin, the head of Shin Bet, the Israeli internal security service, said last week: "I see this as the strategic danger, more than any weapons smuggled into Gaza."

Israeli officials believe that Iran is waging a "proxy war" against their country on two fronts - through Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The Hamas commander said Iranian-trained instructors had also taught more than 700 fighters at a base in Syria.

Al Aqsa Martelaren Brigade juicht aanslag Jeruzalem toe

"Palestijnse vredesorganisatie veroordeelt aanslag in Jeruzalem

Fatah group hails 'heroic' J'lem attack

Khaled Abu Toameh , THE JERUSALEM POST

Fatah's armed wing, the Aksa Martyrs Brigades, on Sunday welcomed the killing of the eight yeshiva students in Jerusalem and lashed out at Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas for condemning the shooting attack.

In a statement issued in Ramallah, the group, which was reportedly dismantled several months ago, also called on Abbas not to resume peace talks with Israel. It also called on him to halt security coordination with Israel.

Referring to Thursday's attack at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva, the group said the "option of resistance remains the only method to restore our rights, free our prisoners and liberate all our lands."

Expressing its full support for the attack, the Aksa Martyrs Brigades described it as an "heroic" operation that came in response to "Israeli atrocities." The group also called for carrying out more attacks against Israel.

The group expressed "astonishment" over a statement that was issued by Abbas condemning the Jerusalem attack. It urged him to release all the Aksa Martyrs Brigades gunmen who were being held in PA security installations in the West Bank and to hand them back their weapons so they could resume their attacks on Israel.

IDF captures 70 liters of acid used to make explosives in W. Bank

JPost.com Staff , THE JERUSALEM POST

IDF forces in the West Bank on Sunday captured 70 liters of acidic materials which can be used to produce explosives.

40 liters of sulfuric acid and 30 liters of nitric acid were discovered in a truck which was stopped at a checkpoint near Kalkilya.

Due to a recent increase in incidents where security forces captured chemicals used to manufacture bombs, the Civil Administration said it would distribute notebooks with details of 27 banned chemicals among soldiers, to help them catch dangerous contraband.

Palestijnse ex-terroriste wil vredeswerk gaan doen

"I'm not sorry about what happened," al-Qudsi said defiantly. She wanted the world to know about the suffering of the Palestinians under occupation, but said: "At the time, I didn't think as a human being. I thought only of revenge.
"If I had thought it through better, I might not have made this decision."

Just released from prison at age 30, the former hairdresser insists she has no regrets, but says times have changed. "I hope to join a peace group," she says. "I am ready to talk to Israelis, to get closer."

Her startling transformation mirrors broader changes in Palestinian society in the West Bank, where enthusiasm for armed conflict against Israeli occupation has been eroding.

Failed Suicide Bomber Seeks To Make Amends
Palestinian Served 6 Years In Prison For Plotting To Blow Self Up Among Israelis

TULKAREM, West Bank (AP) ― Six years ago, Shifa al-Qudsi was plotting to strap on explosives under a maternity dress and blow herself up among Israelis. Now she says she wants to meet them.

Al-Qudsi's story also provides a glimpse of the motives of a suicide bomber and how easy it was at one time for militants to recruit young Palestinians -- mostly men but also a few women -- for 131 bombings that have killed hundreds of Israelis.

For al-Qudsi, the personal appeared to intersect with the political. While she said she wanted to avenge the suffering inflicted on Palestinians by Israeli troops, her former employer said al-Qudsi also felt depressed and stigmatized by her divorce.

Interviewed recently in her parents' home in the West Bank city of Tulkarem, al-Qudsi wore a tailored leather coat, pants, stiletto-heeled boots and a headscarf that seemed more a nod to social norms than a sign of religious piety. She appeared confident and optimistic.

One of 10 children, she married a cousin at 16, gave birth to a daughter, Diana, and divorced after two years when her husband took up with another woman. Returning to her parents' home with her daughter, al-Qudsi started working at a beauty parlor.

Her former boss, Zahwa Zakallah, described her employees as a fun-loving group that would occasionally take day trips, including several to the beach at Netanya, an Israeli city 10 miles west of Tulkarem that would become al-Qudsi's target.

Life changed after the uprising broke out in 2000. As a wave of bombings and shootings by Palestinian militant groups crested, Israeli forces reoccupied West Bank towns in a major military offensive. Troops also ringed the headquarters of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, effectively putting him under house arrest.

Al-Qudsi said she was increasingly driven by a desire for revenge, and was particularly upset by Israel's humiliation of Arafat, a Palestinian icon.

In early 2002, her 16-year-old brother, Mahmoud, was caught with a suicide belt and sentenced to 18 years in prison. And a 27-year-old West Bank paramedic became the first female suicide bomber, killing an elderly Israeli man in Jerusalem.

Al-Qudsi said she sought contact with the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent Fatah offshoot. She said she was told to reconsider and come back in a month. She persisted and was eventually accepted.

"I was waiting for the moment I could push the button and see the bodies flying," she said.

Her handlers wanted to send her to the town of Hadera, but al-Qudsi said she insisted on Netanya because she knew her way around the town. She was fitted for a vest meant to hold 33 pounds of explosives under the maternity dress.

The plan was for her to be accompanied by a male bomber disguised as an Israeli medic who would detonate his explosives minutes after she did, in order to kill Israeli rescuers.

But informers tipped off the Israelis and al-Qudsi was arrested.

Troops barged into her parents' home one night in April 2002 and drove her away. She said they beat her with fists and rifle butts until she reached the local army lockup. She quickly confessed, but spent 42 days being questioned about who else was involved in the plot.

In a plea bargain, an Israeli military court sentenced her to six years in prison.

Her lawyer, Khaled Dazuki, said the sentence was relatively light because no suicide belt was found. Dazuki believes the plan was in its early stages and his client wouldn't have gone through with the attack.

Al-Qudsi described the Israeli prison as a warren of dirty, vermin-infested cells where guards sometimes tear-gassed troublesome inmates, including herself.

Now she has a job with a prisoners' aid group, plans to study social work, and talks about her eagerness to tell ordinary Israelis her story and hear theirs.

She also struggles to explain her decision to become a bomber.

Asked how she could leave her young daughter motherless, she said, "God would have taken care of her." Yet she also said the worst part of being in prison was being away from her child. She and Diana, now 13, are inseparable. The teenager says she's thankful her mother is alive, wants nothing to do with politics, and dreams of going abroad to study law.

What made her change her mind after her arrest? She said that times are different now.

"I'm not sorry about what happened," al-Qudsi said defiantly. She wanted the world to know about the suffering of the Palestinians under occupation, but said: "At the time, I didn't think as a human being. I thought only of revenge.

"If I had thought it through better, I might not have made this decision."

Hamas leiderschap Damascus mogelijk achter aanslag Jeruzalem

Palestinians: Hamas, Hezbollah cooperated on Jerusalem terror attack
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/962055.html
By Avi Issacharoff, Amos Harel, Jonathan Lis and Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondents and AP

The gunman who murdered eight students at Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem last Thursday was acting on instructions from Hamas leaders in Damascus, in coordination with Hezbollah, Palestinian defense sources said.

Over the weekend, eight East Jerusalem residents were arrested in connection with gunman Ala Abu Dhaim's shooting attack. Abu Dhaim's father, two of his brothers and two cousins are among those detained.

The father also removed Hamas and Hezbollah flags from a mourners' tent the family had erected, after being instructed to do so by police. According to the Palestinian news agency Maan, Abu Dhaim's father had in the past been a member of Hamas.

Abu Dhaim, 25, was killed at the scene of the attack by an off-duty Israel Defense Forces officer who lives near the seminary.

So far no Palestinian or Arab organization has claimed responsibility for the attack, although Palestinian sources have said that the attack had been planned by a Hamas network in the West Bank acting on orders from its leaders in Damascus. Hamas' leadership in Gaza was not privy to the plan, which was drawn up in coordination with Hezbollah, the sources said.

The Palestinian Authority believes this was the first of a number of planned attacks by both Hamas and Islamic Jihad, independent of each other.

The Shin Bet security service said the gunman was not known to them. Major General Ilan Franco, the commander of Jerusalem's district police, told Channel 2 that the attacker was "not known to the security forces."

An initial police investigation has revealed that the shooting was not a spontaneous attack, but had been planned in advance. Police also learnt that Abu Dhaim had personally chosen the location and time for the shooting. To this end, he carried out extensive reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering work on the yeshiva.

The gunman had also stockpiled weapons and ammunition, only some of which he took to perpetrate the attack - an AK-47 assault rifle, two pistols and a few magazines.

Since Abu Dhaim, an East Jerusalem resident, had a blue identity card, and since he transported people in the area, he was able to move freely in the city's western part, too, and seems to have been well-acquainted with the attack site. The key question is where he obtained his AK-47 assault rifle, which he used to attack the yeshiva.

Investigators were seeking to establish whether Abu Dhaim had acted alone or was connected to any militant group, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. Abu Dhaim never worked in the yeshiva and the police dismissed the assumption that he had planned to stage a standoff inside the yeshiva, while taking students hostage.

In a television interview in Lebanon, a Hezbollah man on Saturday denied any connection to the attack. Hamas spokespeople in the Gaza Strip said they were checking whether their organization was connected to the attack.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Saturday that just as Israel has managed to stop Hezbollah from "firing a single missile for the past year and a half," so it will stop the terror organizations, too.

Palestinian Authority Daily:

Killer of eight young men is

Holy Martyr- Shahid

Action should cost PA $150 million in US aid

by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook

terrorist

Mahmoud Abbas's official Palestinian Authority daily newspaper has honored the killer of the eight high school students gunned down this week with the status of Shahid - Holy Islamic Martyr. In so doing, the PA is sending its people a straightforward message of support for the terror murders and the murderer. According to the PA interpretation of Islam, there is no higher status that a human being can achieve today than that of Shahid.

The official PA daily Al Hayat Al Jadida prominently placed a picture of the killer on the front page, with the caption, "The Shahid Alaa Abu D'heim." In a Page One  article on the terror killings, his act is again defined as a "Shahada achieving" action.

[See below - a review of religious teachings regarding the supreme status of the Shahid by Palestinian religious leaders on PA (Fatah) television and radio.]

This honoring of terror and terrorists by the PA has significant financial ramifications, particularly at this time. Last week the US Administration sent a request to Congress to allocate $150 million to the Palestinian Authority. In response to earlier PMW reports on the widespread Palestinian honoring of terror, Congress made it illegal for the US to give money to entities that "advocate" terror, as follows:

"[The US] shall terminate assistance to any individual, entity... which she has determined to be involved in or advocating terrorist activity." Congress further legislated that "none of the [US] ... assistance under the West Bank and Gaza Program may be made available for the purpose of recognizing or otherwise honoring individuals who commit, or have committed acts of terrorism."

-2008 Foreign Operations Bill Sec. 657.B - C.1

Since a society's honoring of terrorists is one of the greatest terror promotions, and as the budget for the PA newspaper comes from the PA's general budget, the incessant honoring of this and all recent terrorists by Abbas's PA as Holy Islamic Shahids should render the Palestinian Authority ineligible to receive any American money under the terms of US law.

The following are examples from five different Palestinian religious leaders, all teaching of the supreme status of the Shahids, from 2001 - 2006:

Sheikh Yusu Abu Sneina, Al Aqsa Mosque

"Shahada [Islamic Martyrdom] is an honor, only those who Allah desires, attain the privilege."

-Friday Sermon, Palestinian Authority Radio, Dee. 28, 2001

Dr. Isma'il al-Raduan:

"When the Shahid meets his Maker, all his sins are forgiven from the first gush of blood, and he is exempted from the torments of the grave. He sees his place in Paradise. He is shielded from the Great Shock and marries 72 dark eyed [maidens]. He is a heavenly advocate for 70 members of his family. On his head is placed a crown of honor, one stone of which is worth more than all there is in this world."

-Friday Sermon, PATV, Aug 17, 2001

Sheikh Ahmad Abdul Razak:

"The believer was created to know his Lord to fulfill Islam... to be a Shahid [Islamic Martyr] or intend to be a Shahid. If the believer does not hope for Shahada he will die as in the Jahiliya [pre-Islam]... We must yearn for Shahada and request it from Allah. If we truthfully request it from Allah, he will grant us its rewards even if we die in bed."

-PA TV Friday Sermon, March 22, 2002

Sheikh Ibrahim Mudyris:

"We are not like you, because we do not desire life. If you threaten to kill President Arafat, we will pray to Allah: 'Grant the President Shahada [Islamic Martyrdom] for you."' Yes, we do not pray - like other preachers pray - for longevity for the rulers; here in Palestine we pray: "Lord, grant the President Shahada for you."

-PA TV Friday Sermon, April 30, 2004

Sheikh Imad Hamato:

"When a man sees one of his brothers being killed for Allah, a person with no head, no legs, his body completely burned. Intestines outside, fingers are gone... The most difficult thing which we fear is what the Shahids [Islamic Martyrs] wish for most of all. They ask Allah: 'Oh God, bring us back [to earth] to be killed by the Apache, so the planes will blow us up, that our heads will be cut off...'

We shouldn't forget that Allah, praise him, in blessing the blood of the Shahid, He forgives him from the first gush of blood. And he sees his place in Paradise. He is shielded from the Great Shock and marries 72 Dark-Eyed Maidens (virgins)."

Egyptian official: Syrians preventing truce in Gaza

Cairo official: Gaza Strip conflict serves Syrian interests

By Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent
Last update - 17:51 08/03/2008

An unnamed senior Egyptian official on Saturday said that the possibility that Syria is influencing Palestinian factions Hamas and Islamic Jihad to reject Egyptian offers to mediate a cease-fire between them and Israel, the London-based Arabic language newspaper Al-Hayat reported.

According to the report, Egypt's intelligence chief Omar Suleiman offered the Palestinian factions an Israeli commitment to cease its operations against Palestinian militants in Gaza if the factions made a commitment to halt the rocket fire from the Strip into Israel. The offer, made at a meeting between Egyptian officials and Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders in Egypt on Thursday, was rejected.

According to Egyptian sources, the heads of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, currently based in Damascus, are the only ones authorized to make a decision regarding a cease-fire with Israel, and it is possible that the Syrian government is behind the failure of truce negotiations thus far. "All the evidence points to the fact that Syria wants to divert attention from Lebanon and point the spotlight on Gaza," the Egyptian official said.

"The current escalation [of violence] in the Palestinian arena serves the Syrian interests," they said, explaining that the embarrassment caused by continuing violence in Gaza to Arab Leaders may prompt the Arab nations to send high-level representation to the upcoming Arab summit hosted by Syria later this month, after having threatened that state leaders will not attend if Syria continues to interfere in the political crisis in Lebanon.

The Egyptian accusations against Syria are directly linked to rising tensions in the Arab world currently. The absence of Arab leaders from the Arab summit will cause great embarrassment to Damascus, as the host country, and likely prevent the success of the summit.

The Egyptian officials added that they had frozen efforts to mediate a truce between Israel and the Palestinians until after the Arab summit at the end of March. They said that Suleiman, who is responsible for the mediation efforts, will accompany Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak this week to Poland and Dakar, which will prevent him from advancing truce negotiations.

The officials also said that the terrorist attack in Jerusalem on Thursday, which left eight yeshiva boys dead and several others wounded, placed a "shadow" on the cease-fire negotiations.

Jordan was one of the few Arab countries to condemn the shooting spree at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem.

Laat me niet lachen.

Jordan stops public mourning of gunman

Khaled Abu Toameh , THE JERUSALEM POST

Jordanian security forces have prevented relatives of Ala Abu Dhaim, the man who carried out the terrorist attack in Jerusalem last Thursday, from publicly mourning him.

The relatives, who live near Amman, tried Friday to erect a large tent to receive mourners, but were ordered by Jordanian security officers to dismantle it immediately.

The officers handed the relatives an order signed by the governor of Amman banning them from erecting the tent or publicly mourning Abu Dhaim.

They were also instructed to remove Hamas and Hizbullah flags that were hanging on rooftops and electricity poles.

Muhammed Abu Dhaim, the terrorist's uncle, said he decided to open a mourning tent as soon as he heard that his nephew had been killed in the attack.

"We were hoping that people would come to congratulate us on the martyrdom of my nephew," he said. "This is a heroic operation that must be celebrated by everyone here."

The uncle said that after he dismantled the tent he decided to receive mourners in the yard of his home in the Sweileh suburb of Amma, but was once again threatened by the Jordanian authorities.

"Jordanian security agents and policemen cordoned off the area and prevented people from coming to my house," he complained.

"The Jordanian authorities' decision is unjustified and doesn't make sense. My nephew carried out a heroic operation against an extremist Zionist college that calls for killing Palestinians."

Another family member living in Jordan said it was ironic that the Jordanians had banned the public mourning while Israel was allowing Abu Dhaib's family in Jerusalem to receive mourners and hoist Hizbullah and Hamas flags.

"We saw on TV that the family in Jerusalem was holding a public event," he said. "We didn't see the Israeli police prevent people from arriving at the family house there."

A source in the Jordanian Ministry of Interior said the decision to ban the public mourning in Amman was taken for "security considerations." The source said Jordan would not permit any group or individual to harm its national security by holding events that publicly support violence against civilians.

The source pointed out that in the past the Jordanian authorities prevented the family of slain arch-terrorist Abu Musab Zarqawi from holding a similar event in the town of Zarqa.

Jordan was one of the few Arab countries to condemn the shooting spree at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem.
