Extreme uitspraken PA nr. 1002: de "vermeende Joodse Tempel in Jeruzalem"

Het is moeilijk onderhandelen en concessies doen en elkaar vertrouwen als continu je geschiedenis wordt ontkend en belangrijke symbolen uit het verleden. Volgens de Palestijnen is er geen Joods volk, alleen een religie, en daar is vaak ook van alles mis mee, Jeruzalem is eigenlijk een Arabische stad waar de Joden pas na de stichting van de moderne staat Israel eens een kijkje kwamen nemen, en ook Tel Aviv was oorspronkelijk een Arabische stad. Alles wat de Joden verder doen of wat hun eigen is, is geleend van de Arabieren, ze hebben geen identiteit en geen enkele binding met het Midden-Oosten. Het is een extreme vorm van revionisme, van geschiedvervalsing, zoals in de Sovjet Unie alles wat de machthebbers niet beviel – soms letterlijk – werd weggeretoucheerd. Zolang de Palestijnen dit spel spelen kunnen ze natuurlijk niet verwachten dat Israel land aan ze overdraagt en een Palestijnse staat erkent, al erkent Israel al langer de noodzaak van een tweestatenoplossing, van een Joodse Israel naast een Arabisch Palestina.

Earlier this week, on the Jewish day of mourning known as Tisha B'Av, which commemorates the anniversary of the destruction of the Temple, the official PA daily denied the Temple's existence, referring to it as "the destruction of the alleged Temple" and "the so-called destruction."

For years, Palestinian Authority leaders have actively denied Jewish history both in ancient Judea/Israel and in Jerusalem in particular. Palestinian Media Watch has documented this ongoing PA policy of historical revisionism, which centers on the denial that a Jewish Temple ever existed in Jerusalem. PA political and religious leaders, officials, and even academics consistently refer to the Temple as "the alleged Temple." [Arabic: Al-Haikal Al-Maz'oom].

The Palestinian claims that the Temple never existed and that Jews have no history in the Land of Israel not only contradict Jewish sources, Christian sources, and the archeological record, but contradict the Quran as well. The Quran in Sura 17:2-7 mentions the "Children of Israel's" two periods of independence in the land and the destruction of both the First and the Second Temple: "...to enter the Temple even as they entered it for the first time, and to lay waste..."

The PA accuses Israel of forging a false Jewish history in the land while at the same time stealing Palestinian history, culture, and heritage. The Palestinians refer to these actions as "Judaization." The main target of this "Judaization" is the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which Israel purportedly conspires to destroy in order to build the Jewish Temple.

Advisor to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, Ahmad Al-Ruweidi, recently denied the existence of the Temple while commenting on an Israeli excavation of a tunnel:

"I personally visited the entrance to this tunnel, and it is clear that they [the Israelis] have built it modeled on the alleged Temple, as a basis for transferring the Temple in the future into the Al-Aqsa Mosque."

The following are examples from the PMW archives from April to July 2011. The examples are arranged in two categories: PA leaders refer to the Jewish Temple as "the alleged temple" and PA denial of Jewish history in the land and accusations of heritage theft.

"Since Monday morning, groups of extremist Jews have been roaming the courtyards of Al-Aqsa mosque (i.e., the Temple Mount) one after the other, under heavy police protection, on the occasion of the [week of the] so-called "destruction of the Temple"... This Sunday, the occupation's police handed the shop owners in the Market of the Cotton Merchants... which leads to the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, an order forcing them to close their shops on Monday afternoon (i.e., the eve of the anniversary of the destruction of the Temple - Tisha B'av), in order to facilitate the arrival of the settlers to the Market, for the sake of holding special Talmudic rituals on the occasion of the destruction of the alleged Temple."

Abbas' advisor: Israel wants to transfer the alleged Temple into the Al-Aqsa Mosque

PA TV News broadcast, main report the Committee to Protect Silwan's report concerning the Israeli excavation of a tunnel.

PA TV newsreader: "[The Committee to Protect Silwan] noted that some of the Israeli sources had said that a gold bell had been found in the tunnel, belonging to what they call the Second Temple Period. This once again highlights the efforts of the Israeli side to forge the history of the holy city."

Interview with Ahmad Al-Ruweidi, advisor to President Abbas, on the Committee's report:

Chairman of the Palestinian National Council calls Temple "alleged temple"

"Chairman of the [Palestinian] National Council, Salim Al-Za'anoun, yesterday demanded a halt to the works to Judaize the city of Jerusalem, ...in the vicinity of the [Al-Aqsa] Mosque, turning them into ritual baths for the 'alleged temple', and turning the surroundings of the Mosque and the Old City of Jerusalem into biblical parks."

Jews visiting the Temple Mount are "invasion," and all Israelis are "settlers"

"Israeli MP Michael Ben-Ari invaded the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Tuesday heading a group of settlers, who were on a tour of the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex, listening to Ben-Ari's explanations about the alleged Temple... Chairman of the Supreme Council for Shari'a Law, Sheikh Yusuf Ida'is, said that the invasion of Al-Aqsa had been carried out under the protection of extensive occupation (i.e., Israeli) police forces. He warned of a most dangerous plot of the Israeli establishment, including its various branches, to seize control of [the Mosque], in order to destroy it and establish the alleged Temple in its place."

[Member of the committee Fakhri] Abu Diab drew attention to the fact that the occupation authorities (i.e., Israel) are acting to falsify facts and history, by 'planting' alleged graves in the area, claiming that they are Jewish ones, and thereby conclusively seizing the area... He stated that the results of the [construction of] very prominent works being carried out by the occupation's instruments, are changes in the area's landmarks, with the aim of falsifying its history and its heritage, and [bringing about] its complete Judaization, as a service to the legend and fable of the alleged Temple. As to the parks... they will belong to the Temple, which the occupation authorities and groups of extremist Jews are hurrying to build in place of the Al-Aqsa Mosque."

Former Minister of Religious Affairs: The "alleged Temple" never existed on the site of Al-Aqsa Mosque

"'Quds.net Center for Research and Communications' recently published the book, 'The Guide to the Al-Aqsa Mosque', by speaker at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and former Minister of Religious Affairs, Sheikh Yusuf Salameh. The book... deals with the Al-Aqsa Mosque, its importance, and the religious importance of the city of Jerusalem, in order to refute what the Israelis disseminate, claiming that the Al-Aqsa Mosque was built on the ruins of their temple. Sheikh Salameh said that the book was published at this sensitive time, with the holy city in general and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in particular being subjected to brutal occupation attack, aimed at forging reality, culture and history... The book refutes the Israeli claims that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is situated upon the ruins of the alleged Temple, and states that the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall) is an authentic part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and is not the 'Wailing Wall', as the occupiers falsely refer to it."

PA distortion: Jews changed original Arabic name "Al-Buraq Wall" to "the Wailing Wall"

Official PA daily's columnist on religious affairs, Is'haq Feleifel: "The great and exalted Allah commanded the angel Gabriel to place Muhammad upon the riding beast [named] Al-Buraq, which was a cross between horse and donkey. The night journey was both physical and spiritual... Once he [Muhammad] reached the Al-Aqsa Mosque, (PMW note: the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem was not yet built in the time of Muhammad. The "night journey" mentioned in the Quran is dated to 621 CE. The mosque was built on the Temple Mount by the son of Ummayad Caliph Abd Al-Malik 84 years later in 705 CE.) the angel Gabriel removed Muhammad from upon Al-Buraq's back, and then he tied the beast to the Al-Buraq rock, which was called the 'Al-Buraq Wall'. The Jews changed its name to the 'Wailing Wall', because the Jews are always trying to change Arabic names into Hebrew names, especially when it comes to prayer sites or names of towns and villages. For example, they call Al-Quds 'Jerusalem'; Al-Khalil [they call] 'Hebron'; Atara - 'Atarot, Nablus - 'Shechem', Tel Al-Rabi'a - 'Tel Aviv'(PMW note: 'Rabi'a' is the Arabic translation of the Hebrew word 'aviv', meaning 'spring'); Askelan - Ashkelon. There is not enough room to list all the names which have been replaced with false names. Even the 'Torah' falsified, changed and forged; this is the way of the Jews - they always try to change the real names to other, false names, in order to erase the [historical] facts."

Palestinian distortion: "If I forget thee, oh Jerusalem" was Crusader expression usurped by Zionists

Palestinian researcher Dr. Hayel Sanduqa on PA TV claims that the Hebrew Bible's psalm was actually first said by a Crusader:

"[The Israelis] have acted to change Jerusalem's character. Even the expression (Psalm 137:5) 'If I forget thee, oh Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth, if I do not remember thee.'

Abbas' speech in Gaza, delivered in his name by his advisor and representative Abdallah Al-Ifranji, in honor of "nakba" day - "catastrophe" day, the day the PA mourns the creation of the State of Israel:

PA moderator of PA Gaza event: "The speech of President Mahmoud Abbas, Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee and President of the Palestinian Authority, will be delivered by the comrade, the great fighter, Abdallah Al-Ifranji, representative and advisor of the President."

"National reconciliation [between Hamas and Fatah] is required in order to face Israel and Netanyahu. Hizbullah MP, Retired Brig.-Gen. Walid Sakariya: Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Hizbullah Will Wipe Out Israel, Even at the Cost of Hundreds of Thousands of Casualties, following US Withdrawal from Iraq

Following are excerpts from an interview with Hizbullah MP Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Walid Sakariya, which aired on ANB TV on August 7, 2011.

Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Walid Sakariya: Iran is the country most hostile to Israel, but Iraq serves as a buffer between Iran and the Palestine front – from the days of Saddam Hussein and until the US military presence in Iraq. Iran supports the forces of confrontation: Hamas, Hizbullah, and Syria.

If, following the US withdrawal, Iraq becomes a bridge linking Iran to Syria, the Iranian forces could cross Iraq and arrive in Syria, in order to participate in a direct war on the Golan front.

In that case, Israel would not be fighting Hizbullah alone. It would be fighting Hizbullah, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. This is the so-called "Shiite Crescent" that they fear. Since Iran dominates this [axis], the Arab countries refer to it as the "Shiite Crescent."

If Hizbullah has 5,000 missiles and can destroy some targets in Israel, the equation will completely change when Syria and Iran join the war. You will have the strategic superiority and a force large enough to pulverize Israel, even if this war costs you hundreds of thousands of martyrs – not just 1,000 or 2,000. You will enter this war with a population mass exceeding 100 million.

If Syria, as a confrontation country, fails, America and the Zionist enterprise will be victorious.

Interviewer: Syria is that important...

Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Walid Sakariya: Of course. But if Syria is victorious as a confrontation country, Israel will come to an end. There are military balances. Hizbullah can defeat Israel, but it cannot abolish it. If Syria enters a war with Israel, it may be able to regain the Golan, but it will not be able to liberate Haifa and Tel Aviv.

However, Hizbullah, Syria, Iraq, and Iran will constitute a force that is militarily superior to Israel and will destroy it. They will wage a war and might even suffer hundreds of thousands of martyrs – because Israel might use the nuclear weapon in order to survive – but nevertheless, this war will put an end to Israel.

Antisemitisme buitensporig in paradijselijke Noorwegen

Een voorbeeld van extreem antisemitisme was een televisieoptreden van de komiek Otto Jespersen in 2008 op de grootste Noorse commerciële televisiezender, TV2. Hij zei dat hij medelijden had met de miljarden vlooien en luizen die hun leven in de Duitse gaskamers hadden verloren. Hun vergissing was dat zij zich genesteld hadden op de lichamen van Joden. Een dergelijke uitspraak had ook ergens anders kunnen voorkomen in een live-uitzending. Wat uniek Noors was, was dat ook achteraf het management van TV2 geen bezwaar zag in Jespersens tekst.

Dezelfde tv-zender nodigde in 2009 de veroordeelde Britse Holocaustontkenner David Irving uit voor een interview van meer dan een kwartier met een onwetende journalist. Hij kon dus vrijelijk zijn ideeën verspreiden. Er zijn landen in Europa waar Irving niet toegelaten wordt en het is onwaarschijnlijk dat hij in andere landen tv-tijd zou krijgen van een belangrijk station.

Dergelijke voorbeelden stemmen niet vrolijk. Het is belangrijk dat dit, geheel los van de vreselijke moordpartij door Anders Breivik, onder de aandacht wordt gebracht en dat Noorse politici en opiniemakers daarover kritisch worden bevraagd en aangesproken. Niet door mensen met rechtse en islamofobe sympathieën die ze gemakkelijk in de hoek van Breivik kunnen plaatsen en zo afserveren, maar door mensen die Noorwegen en de sociaal democratie een warm hart toedragen en er niet op uit zijn om politieke punten te scoren. Die zijn er helaas niet al teveel.

Antisemitisme buitensporig in paradijselijke Noorwegen

Volgens de VN is Noorwegen het beste land ter wereld om te leven. Het antisemitisme tiert er echter welig, schrijft Manfred Gerstenfeld.

Een centrale vraag in het internationale debat over de gruwelijke moorden in Oslo en Utoya is: waar heeft Anders Breivik zijn moordzuchtige gedachten opgepikt en in hoeverre zijn diegenen die hij in zijn teksten positief vermeldt verantwoordelijk voor zijn daden? Nu Noorwegen zo in de belangstelling staat, kan men dit debat over invloeden op extremisten in vele richtingen uitbreiden. Een daarvan is: waar komt het disproportioneel grote antisemitisme in Noorwegen vandaan en wie is daarvoor verantwoordelijk?

Noorwegen is om verschillende redenen een ideaal land om dit te onderzoeken. Het ontwikkelingsprogramma van de Verenigde Naties beweert immers dat Noorwegen het beste land ter wereld is om te leven. Bovendien wonen er nauwelijks Joden. De twee Joodse gemeenten in Oslo en Trondheim hebben samen slechts 800 leden. In totaal wonen er minder dan 2000 Joden in het land met 5 miljoen inwoners.

In juni is voor het eerst een deelrapport over racisme en discriminatie in Noorwegen gepubliceerd. Uit deze studie over middelbare scholen in Oslo blijkt dat een derde van de Joodse leerlingen minstens twee- tot driemaal per maand gewelddadig of verbaal bedreigd wordt. Bij boeddhisten is dat bij 10 procent van de leerlingen het geval en bij moslims 5 procent. Een Joodse leerlinge had eerder verklaard dat alle Joodse scholieren die zij kent bedreigd worden. Na de moorden van Breivik zei een Joodse leraar dat enkele van zijn leerlingen hun Jood-zijn verbergen om agressie te voorkomen. Bovendien is voor 51 procent van de leerlingen "Jood" een scheldwoord.

Het is gemakkelijk om moslimleerlingen alle schuld toe te schuiven. Die dragen waarschijnlijk bovengemiddeld bij aan het probleem. De meeste veroorzakers zijn echter etnisch Noorse leerlingen.

Een tweede verklaring voor het antisemitisme is dat voor veel Noren Joden en Israeliërs gelijk zijn. In het paradijselijke Noorwegen zijn de regering, de meeste media en een gedeelte van de culturele elite zeer anti-Israëlisch. De staatskerk en belangrijke niet-gouvernementele organisaties roepen op tot afbraak van de zeer effectieve Israëlische barrière tegen het binnendringen van Palestijnse terroristen, wat neerkomt op het indirect bevorderen van terrorisme.

Een derde reden is dat Noorwegen een lange antisemitische traditie heeft. In 1851 was Noorwegen het laatste Europese land waar Joden toegelaten werden. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog beroofden de Noorse autoriteiten onder premier Vidkun Quisling de Joden, waarna de Duitsers hen naar Auschwitz stuurden, de dood in.

Een andere belangrijke factor is dat de Noorse elite sterk in zichzelf gesloten is en zelden onderhevig is aan buitenlandse kritiek. Mede daardoor heeft hij weinig zelfkritiek en normbesef. Buitenstaanders, zoals evangelische christenen en rechtse politici, worden totaal gemarginaliseerd. In deze kringen vindt men veel vrienden van Israël en Joden.

Dezelfde tv-zender nodigde in 2009 de veroordeelde Britse Holocaustontkenner  David Irving uit voor een interview van meer dan een kwartier met een onwetende journalist. Hij kon dus vrijelijk zijn ideeën verspreiden. Er zijn landen in Europa waar Irving niet toegelaten wordt en het is onwaarschijnlijk dat hij in andere landen tv-tijd zou krijgen van een belangrijk station.

In 2009 gaf de Noorse regering 20 miljoen dollar uit aan een museum en festiviteiten ter herinnering aan de 150e geboortedag van Nobelliteratuurprijswinnaar Knut Hamsun. Hij had de medaille BIJ zijn prijs aan Goebbels gegeven en werd na de oorlog als nazicollaborateur veroordeeld.

Hierbij komt een onafgebroken anti-Israëlische campagne vanuit de elite. De Noorse regering heeft in 2010 zelfs een tentoonstelling van Noorse anti-Israëlische haatprenten in Damascus gesubsidieerd. Qua omvang van publieke stemmingmakerij gaat dit alles veel verder dan wat diegenen die door Breivik geciteerd worden verweten kan worden. Aldus is een atmosfeer gecreëerd waarin de Joodse gemeenschap in Noorwegen op haar tellen moet passen.

Een 19 meter hoge menora, wellicht de grootste ter wereld, staat boven op een heuvel die uitkijkt op de Indonesische stad Manado. Hij dient als bewijs van de tolerantie van het stadsbestuur. Israëlische vlaggen wapperen aan de taxistandplaatsen en in de opgeknapte synagoge waar de lokale autoriteiten betaalden voor de grote davidsster die het plafond van het gebedshuis siert.

Deze regio staat al lang bekend als een christelijk bolwerk en sinds kort ook als de thuisbasis van evangelische en charismatische christelijke groepen. Het gebied in het uiterste noorden van Indonesië getuigt van ongekende pro-Joodse sentimenten sinds een aantal mensen het geloof van hun Joodse voorouders uit Nederland terug omhelzen. Met instemming van de plaatselijke autoriteiten weten ze zich langzaam maar zeker een plaats te verwerven in het woelige religieuze Indonesische landschap, uitgerekend in het land met de grootste moslimbevolking ter wereld.

Deze nieuwe ontwikkeling gebeurt op het ogenblik dat moslimextremisten brutale overvallen plegen op christelijke en andere religieuze minderheden elders in het land. De centrale overheid doet er weinig aan om het tij te keren omdat ze bang zijn grote groepen moslims tegen zich in het harnas te jagen. Tijdens pro-Palestijnse protesten tegen de Gaza-oorlog werd de honderd jaar oude synagoge in Surabaya gesloten. Daarmee verloor de weinig bekende kleine Joodse gemeenschap haar plaats in deze stad en daarmee is de synagoge, juist buiten het centrum van Manado het laatste gebouw voor de Joodse eredienst in het land.

De synagoge wordt bezocht door een tiental mensen die zonder uitzondering van Indonesische komaf zijn en het Jodendom sinds kort bestuderen. Voor ze op buitenlandse Joodse hulp beroep deden, probeerden ze alles over het judaïsme te weten te komen in een internetcafé in de stad. Zelf zeggen ze al grappend dat ze onderwezen worden door rabbijn Google. Een Thora hebben ze zelf uitgeprint door het boek van het internet te downloaden. En om hun kennis over het davenen (bidden) te vergroten, keken ze naar YouTube filmpjes.

"We proberen gewoon goede Joden te zijn", zegt de 27-jarige Toar Palilingan die ultra-orthodox gekleed gaat in zwarte jas compleet met bijpassende hoed. "Maar als je ons vergelijkt met de Joden in Jeruzalem of Brooklyn, dan zijn we dat natuurlijk nog lang niet", zegt Palilingan die nu als Yaakov Baruch door het leven gaat.

Indonesië en Israël onderhouden geen diplomatieke betrekkingen maar het is geen geheim dat beide landen al decennialang gemeenschappelijke militaire en economische belangen met elkaar delen. De laatste jaren zoeken steeds meer Joodse zakenmensen, zowel vanuit Israël als uit de rest van de wereld, naar nieuwe mogelijkheden om er zaken te doen.

Moshe Kotel een 47-jarige zakenman die in El Salvador geboren werd, heeft zowel de Israëlische als de Amerikaanse nationaliteit. Hij komt sinds 2003 elk jaar naar Manado waar hij een groothandel in scharreleieren runt. Kotel, wiens vrouw uit Manoda komt, zegt dat hij zenuwachtig was toen hij voor het eerst op de luchthaven van de stad landde. Maar toen ik de Israëlische vlaggen aan de taxistandplaatsen zag, was ik gerust en voelde ik me echt welkom".

Het overheidsbestuur van Noord Minahasa, een overwegend christelijk district, heeft vorig jaar een gigantische menora laten plaatsen en het hoofd van de toeristische dienst Margarita Rumokoy wist te vertellen dat ze daarvoor meer dan 100.000 euro gespendeerd hadden. Denny Wowiling, die in het plaatselijke bestuur zetelt, zei dat ze de menora hadden laten bouwen nadat ze te weten kwamen dat er ook één stond aan het Israëlische parlement en dat ze hoopten om met de reuzenmenora niet alleen Europese zakenmensen aan te trekken maar ook toeristen. "Maar ook Israëli's komen kijken hoe hun heilige symbool ook buiten Israël te zien is", aldus Wowiling.

Wolwiling die lid is van een pinksterkerk benadrukte dat christenen en moslims vreedzaam samenleven in deze regio maar zei toch bekommerd te zijn dat onder druk van andere regio's daar verandering in kan komen. De pro-Joodse gevoelens zijn duidelijk een gevolg van de evangelische en charismatische christelijke activiteiten in het gebied die al tientallen jaren op steun van Amerikaanse en Europese zendelingen kunnen rekenen.

Sommige experts beoordelen deze stroming dan ook als een reactie tegen de oprukkende orthodoxe islam in grote delen van Indonesië. Theo Kamsa, onderzoeker aan de universiteit van Den Haag bestudeerde de Joodse aanwezigheid in Manado. Hij bevestigt deze stelling en zegt dat in deze regio het christendom altijd al gekenmerkt werd door de overtuiging dat het weerstand kan bieden aan de islamitische overmacht.

De menora is echter niet het enige reuzensymbool. Even verder op heeft een projectontwikkelaar een dertig meter hoog Christusbeeld opgericht; daarmee is het beeld maar een vierde kleiner dan het reusachtige exemplaar in Rio de Janeiro. En in het centrum van de stad zijn er ongelofelijk veel kerken van de meest uiteenlopende signatuur en dat allemaal op nog geen honderd meter van elkaar verwijderd.

Tijdens de koloniale periode waren er in Indonesië in vrijwel alle grote steden Joodse gemeenschappen die optraden als bemiddelaars tussen de Nederlandse kolonialen en de plaatselijke bevolking en vaak aan de kost kwamen als immobiliënmakelaars.

"De anti-Joodse gevoelens kwamen pas tussen 1980 en 1990 opzetten en vooral het Midden-Oostenconflict lag aan de oorsprong daarvan", aldus de onderzoeker. In Surabaya ligt de Joodse begraafplaats er onverzorgd bij. Het is door onkruid overwoekerd en er werden voor het laatst in 2007 nog mensen begraven. De synagoge, die in een hoofdstraat ligt, wordt al tien jaar niet meer bezocht en werd enkel nog uitzonderlijk gebruikt voor een begrafenisdienst. "Tot vorig jaar hadden we geen echte problemen", zegt Sunarmi Karti een Indonesische die nog steeds in de conciërgewoning van de synagoge woont en wiens stiefvader Joods was.

In Manado hebben de Joodse families die uit Nederland kwamen altijd openlijk hun geloof beleden totdat Indonesië in 1949 onafhankelijk werd. Toen hebben Joodse families zich uit veiligheidsoverwegingen bekeerd tot de islam of het christendom.

"We hebben onze kinderen geleerd om nooit over onze Joodse afkomst te praten", zegt Leo van Beugen, 70. Hij zegt dat hij katholiek werd opgevoed, "onze kleinkinderen weten zelfs niets meer af van hun Joodse wortels". Van Beugen is de grootoom van Palilingan. Palilingan vernam een tiental jaar geleden, tijdens een hevige discussie over de Bijbel en over Mozes, dat zijn groottante de Joodse afkomst van zijn familie verborgen hield. Ondertussen weet Palilingan, die les geeft aan de Sam Ratulangi universiteit, dat hij langs moeders kant afstamt van Joodse voorouders uit Nederland terwijl zijn vader christelijk en zijn moeder moslima is.

Palilingan is toegewijd aan wat hij zelf als "het pure karakter " van het ultra-orthodoxe Jodendom noemt en draagt zijn zwarte kleding ook op straat, zelfs als hij naar de hoofdstad Jakarta reist. "De meeste Indonesiërs hebben nog nooit een Jood gezien en denken dat ik van Iran kom", zei Palilingan. "Op een keer kwam er een groep islamistische betogers op me af en ze riepen: Salaam aleikum, vrede zij met U".

Wikipedia oprichter Jimmy Wales bezoek tentenprotest op Rothschild in Tel Aviv

Daar onze website and blog zich richten op het Israelisch-Arabische conflict, hebben we weinig aandacht besteed aan interne zaken als de demonstraties die momenteel in Israel bezig zijn. Hieronder een bericht mede betreffende de oprichter van Wikipedia.

Wikipedia mag dan wel naar neutraliteit streven, maar in de praktijk is het vrij vatbaar voor politieke opinies over zaken als het Midden-Oosten conflict, en is het ook een slagveld in de propaganda-oorlog en de strijd tussen de naratieven om de publieke opinie. De relatief kleine Nederlandstalige Wikipedia, waar de mening van slechts enkele actieve redacteuren de doorslag geeft, is daarmee vaak onbetrouwbaar als het omstreden kwesties betreft. De Engelstalige Wikipedia is iets beter, maar lijkt de laatste jaren ook steeds meer de speelbal van een politieke strijd geworden.

Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales today visited the Rothschild Boulevard protest tents in Tel Aviv, where equality is not seen on the horizon, but where the voice of the masses, just like his free online encyclopedia, is heard far away.

Wales is visiting Israel for the first annual meeting of the country's Wikipedia supporters as part of a series of Wikipedia events. "The main connection between Wikipedia and the protest in Israel is the right of people to express themselves and be heard in public," he said.

Israeli protests are nothing new to Wales. Six weeks ago, he attended the President's Conference in Jerusalem, during the height of the cottage cheese protest. "On my last visit here, Israelis were protesting against the price of cottage cheese, and some people laughed. That protest was apparently a warm-up for this one," he said, during his walk among the dozens of tents while receiving simultaneous translations of the protest signs against housing prices and the high cost of living. "People told me themselves, 'Why only protest against the price of cheese? Let's protest against more serious things, such as rent and the price of housing.'"

Amid the drops of sweat on Wales' face caused by the humidity, it was possible to see the enthusiasm that launched the free knowledge revolution. "This is an amazing time for Israel, with all the protests around," he said. "Many people around the world are watching what's happening here. This is different from what we saw in the revolutions in the Arab world - here there are no tanks surrounding us, only people using their basic right to go out and demonstrate. Yesterday, I couldn’t make it to the demonstration because of the conference, and I regret that. This is amazing."

The Israeli protests became mass protests because they went viral online. "The Internet helps people organize without large organizations. Things happen faster than in the past. There used to be mass demonstrations, but they were organized by large organizations. Today, it's much more spontaneous and faster - and that's the amazing thing," said Wales.

While the people in Israel are protesting, people in the US are mostly dealing with the unprecedented credit downgrade. Wales believes that this could bring Americans onto the streets. "Although it's a bit abstract to demonstrate over something like the credit downgrade of the US, but when it becomes necessary to balance the budget and the debt, there will be cuts. And when Americans see that the changes are unfair, we may see them hit the streets," he says.

Asked if he would set up a tent to protest the US government, Wales said, "I use my tent to go camping in the woods, so I doubt I'll set up a tent on Capitol Hill."

There are also many differences between Wikipedia and the tent protest. "At a time when we're tying to keep Wikipedia neutral, a protest cannot stay that way. When demands are made for changes in the society in which we live, it's very hard to stay outside politics and conflicts between opinions and positions," Wales said.

Before departing back to the US, Wales will attend the Israel Internet Association event, where he will discuss open Internet access. "To make the Internet accessible to everyone, it is necessary to remove market barriers and make it much more competitive," he says. "The moment there isn't one or two players making huge profits from control of the local Internet market, it will be possible to provide access to more people at a minimal price."

Agressieve kolonisten Yitzhar verbannen van Westoever wegens aanvallen op Palestijnen

Soms, maar niet vaak genoeg, wordt er opgetreden tegen agressieve kolonisten. Beter dan een (tijdelijke) verbanning zou zijn een rechtszaak en criminele veroordeling, maar schijnbaar waren er geen harde bewijzen.

13 people ordered out of Yitzhar settlement for allegedly attacking Palestinians

Twelve settlers from Yitzhar and a student at the community's yeshiva were ordered to leave the area on suspicions that they were involved in attacks on Palestinians.
GOC Central Command Avi Mizrahi issued the warrants, which ordered nine of the settlers to stay out of the West Bank, and three merely to leave the community.
The orders, which were backed by Shin Bet recommendations, are valid between three and 12 months.

Early Sunday morning, police and Shin Bet officers entered Yitzhar and handed out the warrants.
This is an unusual act: The last time so many warrants were issued was in October 2006, when GOC Central Command Yair Naveh ordered 19 persons from their homes.

Israel Defense Forces sources said the warrants were an effective tool.
"It's like a battalion commander removed from command who has to issue orders by phone," said a senior Central Command officer.

The most prominent person targeted in the warrants is Akiva Hacohen, who lives on a hilltop near Yitzhar. The Shin Bet considers Hacohen, a married father of four, to be one of the main instigators of attacks on Palestinians. He was handed similar warrants in 2009.

Others include Uriah Cohen, who was previously ordered out of the West Bank in 2006, and Eliav Eliyahu, who was removed from the area in 2009.

Efi Haikin, the yeshiva student, was recently arrested for allegedly torching the car of the Binyamin police chief during the evacuation of the outpost of Alei Ayin.

While the officers were in Itamar on Sunday, a Yitzhar resident was arrested for insulting a Shin Bet officer. He was brought in for questioning on suspicions of insulting a civil servant. He was released on bail.

Gaza is meestal op twee manieren in het nieuws. De humanitaire situatie in het gebied was lange tijd een van de meest gecoverde onderwerpen in de internationale media.
Het tweede nieuws item waarmee Gaza in het nieuws komt is de voortdurende stroom raketten die op Israel neerdaalt. Dit nieuws moet het doorgaans met heel wat minder aandacht doen.

De raketten blijven Israel echter teisteren, in juli werd er gemiddeld één per dag op Israel afgevuurd. De Israëlische minister van interne veiligheid Aharonovitch drong daardoor vorige week aan op een nieuwe grootschalige militaire actie tegen Hamas.

De humanitaire situatie in Gaza blijft de gemoederen buiten Israël echter meer bezig houden.

De Free Gazavloot mag dan gestrand zijn in Griekse havens, dat wil niet zeggen dat de activisten hun pogingen om de situatie in Gaza onder de aandacht te brengen opgeven.

Verassend genoeg stelde juist een NRC columnist deze week de obsessie met Gaza op een heldere wijze aan de kaak.

Zij schreef onder meer:

"Toch bijzonder: er zijn nog steeds mensen die aan zo'n Flotilla willen meedoen om Gaza te bevrijden. Twee weken geleden enterde de Israëlische marine nog een Frans schip dat koste wat kost via zee hulpgoederen wilde brengen naar Gaza. Zo'n schip vaart dus dwars door de Arabische Lente heen, langs miljoenen Noord-Afrikanen in opstand tegen militaire regimes, langs massale mensenrechtenschendingen, maar de wereldverbeteraars met pallets vol hulpgoederen aan boord stoppen niet. Nee, ze varen door, omdat ze nu eenmaal decennia geleden een keer hadden besloten dat de Gaza-kwestie het aller- allerschrijnendst is".

Los van het feit dat er andere gebieden zijn in het Midden-Oosten die de aandacht zouden moeten hebben van de Free Gaza mensenrechtenactivisten, zijn er nog andere argumenten aan te voeren waaruit de absurdheid blijkt van de Gaza campagne tegen Israël.

De bewering dat Israël een (land) blokkade op Gaza handhaaft is al enige tijd achterhaald door de realiteit. De invoerbeperkingen op bijna alle materialen die Gaza nodig heeft, zijn opgeheven. Slechts goederen die direct gebruikt kunnen worden voor de wapenindustrie vallen nog onder het embargo.

Juist voor de ingang van de Islamitische feestmaand Ramadan besloot de Israëlische regering ook om een begin te maken met het opheffen van de uitvoerbeperkingen op goederen uit Gaza. Een maatregel die – gezien de toenemende raketbeschietingen – opnieuw bewees dat Israel de belangen van de bevolking in Gaza scheidt van die van Hamas.

De schendingen van Palestijnse mensenrechten door Palestijnen zelf worden echter nagenoeg niet belicht door de internationale media.

De Palestijnse journalist Khaled Abu Toameh vertelde ons vorig jaar al dat het grootste deel van de internationale media nieuws dat niet vanuit een anti Israelisch gezichtspunt kan worden gebracht vrijwel negeert.

Neem bij voorbeeld een bericht op de website van het Palestijnse centrum voor mensenrechten (PCHR) vorige week. Palestijnse huizen in Gaza die illegaal zijn gebouwd, worden door Hamas zonder pardon met bulldozers verwoest, en daarbij vallen zelfs doden, zo blijkt uit het bericht.

Niettemin worden dergelijke berichten genegeerd door de media en door de Gaza activisten.

De opening van de Egyptische grens met Gaza in Rafah kreeg wel internationale aandacht. Nu blijkt echter dat Hamas zelf verantwoordelijk is voor het in stand houden van de beperking van de bewegingsvrijheid van de Palestijnen in Gaza, en dat las u waarschijnlijk nergens.

Eerst was er de Palestijnse website Gaza Youth Breaks Out die rapporteerdeover de enorme bureaucratische beperkingen bij de uitreisprocedure. Die bureaucratie weet men hoofdzakelijk aan de "great Pharoah's", dat wil zeggen Egypte.

Maar Al Jazeerah nuanceerde dat beeld vorige week aanzienlijk. In een reportage vanuit Gaza kwamen Palestijnen aan het woord die getuigden van Hamas corruptie bij het afgeven van een exit visum.

Het Palestijnse centrum voor de mensenrechten PCHR meldde dat 50% van alle uitreis visums wordt afgegeven aan mensen die connecties hebben met Hamas.

Deze omgang met de rechten van de Palestijnen weerhield de VN organisaties UNWRA en OCHA er niet van om in dezelfde week rapporten uit te brengen die uitsluitend vermeende Israëlische mensenrechten schendingen behandelen en deze zaken volkomen negeren.

Missing Peace zal deze week uitgebreider rapporteren over de wijze waarop op een structurele basis eenzijdige rapporten en halve en hele onwaarheden over Israel de wereld worden in geholpen.

Een van de organisaties die wij hierop betrapten was UNWRA en dat leidde tot een paniek reactie bij UNWRA woordvoerder Chris Gunnes.

Palestijnse terroriste Tamimi komt mogelijk vrij in gevangenenruil Shalit

We know that Malki’s murderer, Ahlam Tamimi – who planned the attack, and brought the bomb and the bomber to the target she had chosen – may one day return, triumphant, to her home in Ramallah. The act she committed, to which she confessed and of which she was convicted, is somehow not considered barbaric enough to ensure that the 16 life terms to which she was sentenced will stand.

The court’s verdict is in danger of being overturned by a handful of Israeli politicians. Media reports say Hamas demands Tamimi’s freedom, along with hundreds of other terrorists, in a deal to free kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit.

Tamimi decimated an entire family. A mother, a father and three of their eight children were among the 15 she murdered. Another victim, in the fifth month of her first pregnancy, was her parents’ only child.

Tamimi verklaarde in 2006 dat ze geen spijt had van wat ze had gedaan, en toch wel weer vrij zou komen. In een documentaire op de VPRO onlangs over vrouwelijke terroristen in Israelische gevangenissen bleek dat velen geen spijt hadden. Als Israel deze mensen vrijlaat, is de kans groot dat ze, wanneer de tijd daarvoor rijp is, weer aanslagen zullen plegen of op andere manieren aan de ‘gewapende strijd’ tegen Israel en haar burgers zullen deelnemen. Van eerder vrij gelaten terroristen bleek een flink deel inderdaad weer actief geworden bij terroristische groeperingen. Daarom ben ik tegen een gevangenenruil, al betekent het misschien dat Shalit nog lange tijd (en wellicht nooit) geen daglicht zal zien. Het alternatief is dat veel meer mensen nooit meer daglicht zullen zien.

My daughter, Malki, died in the Sbarro massacre 10 years ago. The monster who planned her murder brags that she will soon be freed. May she remain in jail for as long as I grieve – forever.

This week marks a decade since my daughter, Malki, was murdered in one of the bloodiest terror attacks of the Second Intifada.

The day began for me with a crippling migraine.

While I lay down to recuperate, Malki came to my bedroom door. She and her friend, Michal, offered to take my youngest child, Chaya (who is blind and severely disabled) for a walk. Malki was devoted to her sister. but the heat was oppressive, so I said: “Thanks, but how about later on, when it’s cooler?” The headache was so bad that I said good-bye to them without opening my eyes.

Malki phoned an hour later. “We’ve finished decorating our friend’s room to welcome her home” she said, “Now I’m going to that camp counselors’ meeting in Talpiot. I love you. Bye.”

Her last words were routine. We often ended our chats that way.

Forty five minutes later, I heard a CNN newsflash about a terror attack in downtown Jerusalem. I burst into tears, but not out of fear for Malki’s safety. After all, she had gone to Talpiot. And she had a cellphone, so I would be able reach her.

I was worried about my other two children, who had gone shopping in the capital’s Givat Shaul neighborhood without a phone.

When they returned, I hugged them tightly. Then I dialed Malki’s number again and again. I dialed while I drove to pick up my soldier son, who had been released for his first weekend furlough.

He pointed out that many cell connections were still down. Hopeful, I dialed some more.

After we returned, Michal’s mother, Avivah, called us to say she couldn’t reach Michal either. Soon afterwards, one of their friends notified us that the girls had stopped in at Sbarro’s.

Dread seized my heart.

Avivah suggested we drive to Shaarei Zedek hospital to search among the wounded. On the way, Michal’s sister called us to say Malki had not arrived at the counselors’ meeting. I burst into tears. Hope waned.

Avivah and I separated on arrival at the hospital. I was ushered into an office where I was handed a phone. Somebody at the Abu Kabir morgue - the government pathology center in Yafo - wanted a description of Malki and of the clothes she was wearing . I told the woman I hadn’t actually seen Malki that day. She said there was no-one there matching the description I gave.

I later learned that Avivah had found Michal dead on a gurney in a hospital corridor.

That night, my husband and sons worked the phones, contacting Jerusalem’s other hospitals as well as people who might help. Some friends told me tales they had heard of trauma victims who wandered the streets in shock for hours. But I knew by then that Malki was not wandering anywhere.

Still, I recited Psalms along with our family and friends.

Toward midnight, my husband followed a lead that led nowhere and came home with the message that the city’s social work department was arranging for someone from the family to go to Abu Kabir.

It fell to my two eldest sons. I have no idea why my husband and I did not go. It’s a decision I still regret.

An hour later they phoned. I watched my husband answer the call, saw his face drop, and knew our world had been destroyed forever.

THE MOURNING of parents for a murdered child never heals or fades. Forget the hackneyed jargon: “reaching closure”, “moving on”, “making lemonade from lemons,” “what doesn’t break you only strengthens you,” “celebrate the life rather than the death”, etc., etc.

They just don’t apply.

But in Israel, murder by terrorism engenders unique complications.

We know that Malki’s murderer, Ahlam Tamimi – who planned the attack, and brought the bomb and the bomber to the target she had chosen – may one day return, triumphant, to her home in Ramallah. The act she committed, to which she confessed and of which she was convicted, is somehow not considered barbaric enough to ensure that the 16 life terms to which she was sentenced will stand.

The court’s verdict is in danger of being overturned by a handful of Israeli politicians. Media reports say Hamas demands Tamimi’s freedom, along with hundreds of other terrorists, in a deal to free kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit.

Tamimi decimated an entire family.

A mother, a father and three of their eight children were among the 15 she murdered. Another victim, in the fifth month of her first pregnancy, was her parents’ only child.

Who can possibly fathom their pain? One victim, not even counted among the dead, has remained in a coma for 10 years. Her daughter, then two years old, has grown up motherless; her husband effectively widowed.

The demands of victims’ families are too often dismissed as primitive vengefulness. Our voices carry little weight in negotiations for prisoner releases. The one “concession” made to us is the government’s publicizing of the prisoners’ names 48 hours before they walk free. High Court appeals filed by victims’ families within such time constraints have always failed.

Since the Fogel family murders last March, capital punishment has been suggested as a means of combating the releases of barbaric murderers. I favor life imprisonment with harsh conditions and without parole for Tamimi, who cockily declared in 2006: “I’m not sorry for what I did. I will get out of prison.”

Anything less trivializes the lives of her victims.

Will the knowledge that Malki’s murderer remains behind bars ease the longing to hug my angel again, to caress her silky hair and kiss her soft cheek? No. But her release would intensify my pain immeasurably.

Palestinian Ambassador to Tehran Salah al-Zawawi took the Zionist regime responsible for the miseries and damages inflicted on the Muslim world, and called on all Muslims to double their efforts to reinvigorate their unity and solidarity.

"Israel is the root cause of whatever (problem) is happening in the Muslim world and the problems of Muslims will not be solved, but through unity based on the holy Quran and (Prophet Mohammad's) tradition," Zawawi said in a meeting with Iranian Islamic Culture and Guidance Minister Seyed Mohammad Hosseini in Tehran on Saturday night.

Or, as the NYT's Ethan Bronner would interpret it, "two state solution."

Meanwhile, another Iranian news agency quotes a Hamas leader:

Senior Hamas official Mushir al-Masri said that unleashing the West Bank resistance forces and ending security coordination is the best response against Israeli settlement.

I think that peace is right around the corner. If only Israel would make a few more concessions, these guys will be happy!
