Tevreden? Triomfantelijk?

Hoe is George daar weggekomen?

PA has literally wiped Israel off the map

http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/2010/11/pa-has-literally-wiped-israel-off-map.html

Men laat consequent een wereld zonder Israel zien.

Just in case you had any doubts as to their peaceful intentions.

Tja.

"We must also recall the outstanding [early] leadership of the Palestinian people, the Grand Mufti of Palestine-Haj Mohammed Amin al-Husseini, who sponsored the struggle from the beginning, and sponsored the struggle and displacement for the cause and died away from his home."

Arme man.

New Abbas poster

http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/2010/11/new-abbas-poster.html

In the same speech that Mahmoud Abbas waxed nostalgically over the PLO in 1964 today, he added, "We must also recall the outstanding [early] leadership of the Palestinian people, the Grand Mufti of Palestine-Haj Mohammed Amin al-Husseini, who sponsored the struggle from the beginning, and sponsored the struggle and displacement for the cause and died away from his home."

The Mufti was a rabid Jew-hater who was the driving force behind not only the 1929 massacres in Jerusalem and Hebron but also the 1936-39 riots that resulted in the deaths of hundreds. He moved to Germany during World War II, hoping that Hitler would win and allow to him murder every Jewish man, woman and child in Palestine, and proposing plans to do exactly that.

This is Mahmoud Abbas' hero.

For some reason, that part of his speech wasn't translated in the English version of the Ma'an article.

If any Western politician would publicly praise a Nazi sympathizer who supported genocide, their careers would be over. When the so-called "moderate" PA leaders do exactly that, no one says a word.

This idea that it is acceptable for Arabs to make outlandish and unacceptable statements because they are Arab is nothing less than bigotry. If they are to be treated as respectable world leaders, they should be held to the same standards as anyone else. It is way past time of granting them a free pass.

Abbas remembers the good old days of the PLO in 1964

http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/2010/11/abbas-remembers-good-old-days-of-plo-in.html

Ma'an (Arabic) reports that Mahmoud Abbas spoke at the opening of a new PLO headquarters in Ramallah today. He described it as a "temporary" headquarters, saying that he expects it will be moved to Jerusalem "in the near future."

If he believes that, then he just announced that he wasted millions of dollars of donor money to build a useless building.

He recalled visiting the PLO headquarters in Jerusalem in 1964, saying that  just as it was the headquarters of the PLO then, so it will return.

For some reason, he didn't mention that the PLO in 1964 had explicitly rejected the idea of a Palestinian Arab state on the West Bank, saying that they have no ambitions to take away Jordanian territory. From its original charter:

Article 24: This Organization does not exercise any territorial sovereignty over the West Bank in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, on the Gaza Strip or in the Himmah Area. Its activities will be on the national popular level in the liberational, organizational, political and financial fields.

Also in 1964, the PLO's goal was not to build a state - it was only to destroy Israel. Nowhere in its charter does it use the word "state" or "nation" in terms of its goals; it only talks about a "homeland" and the "liberation of Palestine" that is strongly implied - along with the concept of a Palestinian Arab people - to be a tactical move on the way to pan-Arab unity:
Article 11: The Palestinian people firmly believe in Arab unity, and in order to play its role in realizing this goal, it must, at this stage of its struggle, preserve its Palestinian personality and all its constituents. It must strengthen the consciousness of its existence and stance and stand against any attempt or plan that may weaken or disintegrate its personality.

Article 12: Arab unity and the liberation of Palestine are two complementary goals; each prepares for the attainment of the other. Arab unity leads to the liberation of Palestine, and the liberation of Palestine leads to Arab unity. Working for both must go side by side.

The only nation it speaks about is the negation of a Jewish nation, anywhere:

Article 18: The Balfour Declaration, the Palestine Mandate System, and all that has been based on them are considered null and void. The claims of historic and spiritual ties between Jews and Palestine are not in agreement with the facts of history or with the true basis of sound statehood. Judaism, because it is a divine religion, is not a nationality with independent existence. Furthermore, the Jews are not one people with an independent personality because they are citizens to their states.
Within the same document we see the attempt to artificially create a people who nobody had heard of a few decades earlier, and to deny the nationhood of a people who had been identified as such for millennia.

This was the PLO of 1964 that Abbas nostalgically recalls. And this document is still available on the PLO's UN website.

And while its stated goals might have changed, its actions are still remarkably consistent with the actions of today's "moderate" Mahmoud Abbas.

Voormannen

Bloeme Evers-Emden (84) overleefde Auschwitz. Haar zoon is rabbijn Raphael Evers.

==================================================

Brief VS over verlengde bouwstop Israel is klaar

Barak said it was critical for Israel to come to an agreement with the US over the understandings regarding settlement construction.
"Either we will reach an understanding with the Americans, and the Palestinians and the Arab world will have to suit themselves to it, or the opposite will occur – the Arab world and the Palestinians will reach an understanding with the Americans, and we will have to suit ourselves to the conclusions," he said.

Barak said a way had to be found to end the disagreement with the US over the construction issues, "because this is our greatest vulnerability in the world; there is not a government in the world that recognizes our right to build in Judea and Samaria."

"What is very important is to let the negotiators sit around the table and get an agreement including on the borders, not to decide from Brussels or elsewhere what should the Palestinian state be," Frattini said. "We do want a Palestinian state as soon as possible, but there is no consensus and there are no proposals in Europe to have a decision on behalf of the two negotiators."

US letter on freeze deal has been completed, 'Post' learns

Middle East expert says Obama made offer, but Congress must now approve deal against backdrop of incoming Republicans seeking to save money; says Netanyahu looking for "fallback understanding."

The parties have finalized the text for the US letter to Israel concerning the terms of a renewed settlement freeze, according to Middle East expert David Makovsky.

He recently returned to the US after extensive conversations with Israeli and Arab leaders.

Makovsky highlighted, however, complicating factors in the effort to get a deal on paper approved and signed, speaking at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy on Tuesday.

The crux of the deal centers on the US providing Israel with advanced fighter jets in return for a three-month West Bank settlement freeze that both the US administration and the government in Jerusalem hope will get Palestinians back to the negotiating table, he said.

Makovsky pointed out that while the Obama administration is making the offer, it's Congress that must approve such a deal. Although Congress is typically supportive of Israeli aid and military acquisitions, incoming Republicans who will be taking over the US House have been talking about the need to save money and perhaps cut foreign aid.

In this climate, Makovsky said that Netanyahu is looking for some sort of "fallback understanding" so that he can present the security cabinet with an iron-clad arrangement for the planes in order to get the ministers' backing for the freeze.

He also referred to a "verbal affirmation" from Netanyahu to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the there would be "meaningful progress" on border issues during the 90-day freeze. He said that Israeli officials have concerns about a solitary focus on territory, or even on territory and security, over those 90 days, since Israel sees its best "chips" as being land. Officials are worried that if they give ground on this issue it will leave them in a weaker position when it comes to dealing with the even more sensitive issues of Jerusalem and refugees, so they are looking to find a formula they feel comfortable with.

Makovsky said that while the text didn't contain any references to a long-term Israeli presence in the Jordan Valley – a key point Palestinians objected to – that issue would most likely come up again.

Meanwhile, the wide gaps inside the government were on full display on Tuesday, with Defense Minister Ehud Barak saying Israel must work toward a two-state solution or face losing its Jewish or democratic character, and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman saying that a final agreement with the Palestinians is unrealistic, and that the diplomatic focus should instead be on reaching a long-term interim agreement.

These widely varying visions of the future came as Jerusalem continued to wait for the just finalized letter of commitment from the US.

But while Barak indicated that direct talks with the Palestinians were absolutely vital for Israel, Lieberman said they were as important for the Palestinians as they were for Israel.

"There is no choice but to separate from the Palestinians," the defense minister said at a conference of regional authority heads in the Negev. "Two states for two peoples is not a formula or slogan and is not a favor that we are doing for the Palestinians. That is the only way to ensure the future of the Jewish people."

Barak said two states were necessary because if a boundary could not be drawn through the Land of Israel and there were only one political entity, that entity would have to be either Jewish or democratic, but it could not be both.

Lieberman, meanwhile, displayed the government's other approach, saying at a press conference with visiting Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini that it would be wise to move from the current track of trying to resolve the conflict with the Palestinians – reaching a final agreement – to a different track where the goal would be a long-term interim agreement.

"I think we have a deep political, diplomatic disagreement, which is very emotional," Lieberman said of the conflict with the Palestinians. "So it is preferable now to focus on the two issues where there is joint interest and cooperation that has proven itself in the past: in the spheres of security and economics."

Regarding negotiations with the Americans over the document concerning a settlement freeze, Lieberman said that if the Palestinians were truly interested in talks, then the "guarantees [from the US] and the document are much less important than starting the direct talks."

Lieberman said that while he didn't know the status of the talks with the US, "I am not willing to pay another additional price for the joy of conducting negotiations [with the Palestinians]. This is in their interests just as it is in ours."

Frattini, meanwhile, related to recent Palestinian threats to get the world to recognize a Palestinians state inside the June 4, 1967, lines, thereby imposing a solution on the parties, by saying that "so far" there is an understanding among the EU states that "we should support negotiations and negotiators, not replace the negotiations and negotiators.

As Frattini was meeting with top Israeli officials, in Brussels foreign ministers and other senior representatives of EU countries were discussing the Middle East at the monthly Foreign Affairs Council.

Following the meeting, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton issued a statement saying that the ministers exchanged views and "voiced their concern at the current lack of progress and the ongoing settlement activities, particularly in east Jerusalem. The High Representative [Ashton] pointed to the Council's December 2009 conclusions and recalled that settlements are illegal under international law, are an obstacle to peace and threaten to make a two-state solution impossible."

According to the statement, the "ministers also expressed their ongoing concern at the situation in Gaza, calling for the Gaza crossings to be opened and, in particular, for exports to be allowed out of Gaza."

One Israeli diplomatic official said that what was so striking was that the statement was completely out of sync with the message that Frattini brought to Israel, one reason why the EU's influence here is so limited.

Regarding the EU statement, the official said that "as long as this is their world view, they will continue to remain locked in their own fantasy work, without any possibility of influencing the real one."

It is also mind boggling, the official said, that the statements routinely issued from the EU "make no acknowledgment of Israeli positions. They hold on to their slogans for dear life, and no reality makes them change it."

Al Aqsa Sheikh (and PA): Israel "Judaizing" the Kotel

http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/2010/11/al-aqsa-sheikh-and-pa-israel-judaizing.html

Sheikh Yusuf Juma Salama, a preacher at Al Aqsa mosque and First Deputy of the Chairman of the Supreme Islamic Council in Jerusalem, is complaining about a new plan to expand the Western Wall plaza to accommodate more visitors.

He said that there is nothing Jewish about the Kotel, that it is an integral part of the Al Aqsa Mosque, and the objective of this plan is to Judaize the "Wailing Wall."

He also complained about the rebuilding of the Hurva synagogue and about plans to another major synagogue in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem, possibly referring to this rumor.

In case you think that only radical Islamist nutjobs refer to Israeli renovation of the Kotel Plaza as "Judaizing," the exact same word is used by the official Palestinian Arab WAFA news agency.

PA slams NIS 85 million Kotel development project

"This move is preventing us from reaching a solution," PA spokesman says; project to help accommodate 8 million annual visitors to Western Wall, the most visited site in Israel.

The Palestinian Authority slammed a Sunday cabinet decision to allot NIS 85 million to a development project for the Western Wall over the next five years, AFP reported.

Ghassan Hatib, a PA spokesperson reportedly said: "Israel does not have permission to make changes in the occupied territories, especially in Jerusalem."

"This move is preventing us from reaching an agreement, because any solution must include Jerusalem," Hatib added.

The project  will upgrade physical and transportation infrastructure at the site, provide access to new archeological findings, and run educational programs for soldiers and students.

The approved plan is a continuation of another five year project that began at the site in 2004 and, according to a statement put out after Sunday's cabinet meeting, led to a phenomenal growth in the number of visitors to the Wall, from two million annually before the project began to eight million visitors in 2009. The Wall is the most visited site in the country.

The continuation of the development project will be managed by the Prime Minister's Office and carried out by the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, with the funds coming from the interior, transportation, tourism, public security, defense and education ministries, as well as from the Israel Lands Authority.

"The Western Wall is the Jewish people's most important heritage site," Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said during the cabinet discussion where the project was approved. "We are obligated to develop and preserve it so it can continue to be a focus for visitors and a source of inspiration for millions of visitors, tourists and children and adults from Israel and around the world."

Rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Sites Shmuel Rabinovitch lauded the decision and noted that the site is frequented by visitors "seeking a visit of meaningfulness and connection to generations of Jewish continuity... Thanks to this ongoing support, the Western Wall Heritage Foundation will be able to continue and act to promote the well-being of those praying and the tourists."

Women of the Wall Chair Anat Hoffman, however, stressed that if there won't be a pluralistic plaza for joint prayer, not necessarily in the place of the existent praying sections, "we can forget about international tourism." She noted that the majority of Jewish tourists are not orthodox, and Christian tourists also feel ill at ease when haredi ushers instruct them to remove crosses worn around their necks at the site. "We must not think only of the orthodox Jews," she said.

"During the British mandate in Palestine, the number of Jews who visited the wall increased to a point where the Muslims felt threatened and then there was the Al-Buraq Revolution on August 23, 1929, where dozens of Muslims were martyred and a large number of Jews were killed."

Jews have no right to Western Wall, PA 'study' says

Official paper by published by PA Ministry of Information claims Al-Buraq Wall, as it is known to Muslims, constitutes Waqf property owned by an Algerian-Moroccan Muslim family.

The Western Wall belongs to Muslims and is an integral part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Haram al-Sharif [the Noble Sanctuary], according to an official paper published on Monday by the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Information in Ramallah.

The paper, which has been presented as a "study," was prepared by Al-Mutawakel Taha, a senior official with the PA Ministry of Information to "refute" Jews' claim to the Western Wall.

In the past, PA leaders and officials had also denied Jews' right to the Kotel, insisting that the Temple Mount had never stood in the area.

The new paper claims that the Western Wall, or Al-Buraq Wall as it is known to Muslims, constitutes Waqf property owned by an Algerian-Moroccan Muslim family.

It claims that there isn't one stone in the wall that belongs to the era of King Solomon.

The "study" also found that the path next to the Wailing Wall was never a public road, but was established only for the use of Muslims living in the area or making their way toward the mosques on the Temple Mount.

"The Zionist occupation falsely and unjustly claims that it owns this wall which it calls the Western Wall or Kotel," Taha, who is also a renowned Palestinian poet and writer, wrote in his project. "The Al-Buraq Wall is in fact the western wall of the Al-Aqsa Mosque."

He added that the Jews had never used the site for worship until the Balfour Declaration of 1917. "This wall was never part of the so-called Temple Mount, but Muslim tolerance allowed the Jews to stand in front of it and weep over its destruction," he wrote.

"During the British mandate in Palestine, the number of Jews who visited the wall increased to a point where the Muslims felt threatened and then there was the Al-Buraq Revolution on August 23, 1929, where dozens of Muslims were martyred and a large number of Jews were killed."

The author, who is affiliated with PA President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction, emphasizes that over the past few decades Jews had failed to prove that the wall had any connection to their religion.

"Many studies published by Jewish experts have affirmed that there is no archeological evidence that the Temple Mount was built during the period of King Solomon," the paper added. "One can only conclude that the Al-Buraq Wall is a Muslim wall and an integral part of the Aqsa Mosque and Haram Al-Sharif. No one has the right to claim ownership over it or change its features or original character. Also, no one has the right to agree with the occupation state's racist and oppressive measures against history and holy sites."

The PA ministry's study also warned that "no Muslim or Arab or Palestinian had the right to give up one stone of the Al-Buraq Wall or other religious sites."

Hamas forces in Gaza (Photo: Reuters)

According to the poll, 61% of Palestinians from both Gaza and the West Bank support direct negotiations with Israel, and 60% accept the two-state solution. A 54% majority also agree peace is possible with Israel.
A closer look, however, reveals a different picture: According to the poll, most Palestinians refuse to reconcile with the idea of Israel as a Jewish state. While 23% accept the statement that "Israel has a permanent right to exist as a homeland for the Jewish people," two-thirds prefer the alternative statement that "over time Palestinians must work to get back all the land for a Palestinian state."
Moreover, the Palestinians perceive the two-state solution as a precursor to this entirely Palestinian state. When presented with the statement that "the best goal is for a two-state solution that keeps two states living side by side," 30% agreed, while 60% opted for the alternative statement that "the real goal should be to start with two states but then move it to all being one Palestinian state."

In response to a scenario where Palestinian institutions are built up for independence and territories are exchanged in line with the 1967 borders, Palestinians show a shift towards acceptance of Israel as a Jewish state. Considering this scenario, 50% of respondents said they would "favor the Palestinian Authority officially recognizing Israel as a Jewish state as part of a two-state solution."
Furthermore, 56% in the West Bank and 58% in Gaza said that if this scenario takes place, streets and squares should cease to be named after suicide bombers, and 51% in the West Bank – though only 12% in Gaza – favor depicting Israel on maps of the region in schoolbooks and official documents.

Poll: Most Palestinians view talks as precursor to 1 state

Disturbing US poll: Most Palestinians refuse to accept idea of Israel as Jewish state, view peace talks, two-state solution as first step towards creation of one Palestinian state in area; 58% support armed struggle

Yitzhak Benhorin
Published: 11.20.10, 20:33

The majority of Palestinians support direct talks and the two-state solution, but ultimately want the entire area between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea to turn into one Palestinian state, a poll sponsored by The Israel Project, a Jewish-American organization, shows.

The data, collected by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research in October, shows that the Palestinians blame Hamas for the current state of affairs in the Gaza Strip, and are hostile not only towards the Islamic organization but also towards Iran.

According to the poll, 61% of Palestinians from both Gaza and the West Bank support direct negotiations with Israel, and 60% accept the two-state solution. A 54% majority also agree peace is possible with Israel.

23%: Israel is Jewish homeland

On the issue of terrorism, 58% said they support the armed struggle with Israel, while 36% believes that the direct talks are the only option. In the aftermath of Operation Cast Lead, support for armed struggle was lower in Gaza (51%) than in the West Bank (62%).

'Iran cause of PA's problems'

The poll data also suggests that the Palestinians are turning away from Hamas; 68% say that pressuring the organization to renounce terrorism is an important step towards peace, while 62% said that Hamas should stop rocket fire from Gaza. Furthermore, 56% of Gaza residents have negative views towards Hamas' leadership. Overall, 53% of Palestinians feel hostility towards Hamas.

Iran's popularity proved to be quite low as well; in Gaza, 27% blame the Islamic Republic as a factor in the problems Palestinians face. Additionally, 55% of Palestinians negatively rated the nation as "cool," while 39% gave it a "very cold" rating. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad received similar marks.

Despite recent reports of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas losing his footing, the poll shows that 61% of Palestinians support him. PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad showed greater popularity, with 65% of Palestinian support. As for Fatah, 44% of Gaza residents expressed support for its leadership, while Hamas leaders received only 27% of the residents' support.

Although we will continue to communicate publicly and privately to our allies and grantees that NIF does not support BDS as a strategy or tactic, we will not reduce or eliminate our funding for grantees that differ with us on a tactical matter. NIF will not fund BDS activities nor support organizations for which BDS is a substantial element of their activities, but will support organizations that conform to our grant requirements if their support for BDS is incidental or subsidiary to their significant programs.

The way I read this, the NIF does not support the attempt by anti-Israel activists to turn the world's only Jewish country into a pariah state, and Jews into a target — once again — of a broad-based economic boycott. Except when it does, a little. It would seem that if the New Israel Fund believes BDS to be immoral, then it would defund grantees that support BDS, even incidentally.  This is one of those bright-line issues, and if NIF wants to get on the wrong side of that line, it should not call itself a pro-Israel organization.
Jeff is absolutely right to say that supporting BDS under any circumstances is incompatible with defining oneself as pro-Israel. After all, can you imagine a foundation dedicated to civil rights supporting grantees whose advocacy of separate lunch counters was deemed "incidental?"

The New Israel Fund and BDS

This one has been doing the email rounds rather feverishly today, and now Jeff Goldberg has run with it:

Well, this is certainly disconcerting: The New Israel Fund, a left-leaning organization I admire (it funds all sorts of civil liberties groups in Israel), states that, on the one hand, the anti-Israel boycott movement (the BDS movement, for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions)  is pursuing a counterproductive and inflammatory strategy, but on the other, it will continue to fund groups that support BDS, so long as they don't support BDS too much. Here are the weasel words, so you can judge NIF's position for yourself:

NIF supports an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories as a central tenet of the strategic framework in which we operate.  The tactics known as 'boycott, divestment and sanctions' (BDS) are designed to pressure Israel to end the occupation, but NIF believes these tactics to be unproductive, inflammatory and ineffective because of the difficulties in defining an approach that is not overly broad, does not delegitimize Israel and will achieve the long-term goal.

There is, however, a more fundamental point concerning NIF's characterization of BDS as a "tactical matter," the aim of which is to secure an end to the "occupation" - a term which NIF understands as referring to those territories under Israeli control since the 1967 war. In fact, the polar opposite is true. BDS is the tangible expression of an ideology which holds that Israel itself has no moral or legal foundation. And this is something understood on left and right. J Street, commendably, sums it up rather well:

J Street strongly opposes views and positions such as those captured at the Palestinian BDS National Committee's website, www.bdsmovement.net, because, among other reasons, they fail explicitly to recognize Israel's right to exist and they ignore or reject Israel's role as a national home for the Jewish people.  In addition, the promotion by some in the BDS Movement of the 'return' to Israel of Palestinian refugees from 1948 and their families indicates support for an outcome incompatible with our vision of Israel and incompatible with a two-state solution to the conflict.

For the BDS movement, the original sin crystallized in 1948, not 1967. Those who push for BDS are advocating the same eliminationist strategy embodied in the Arab League's 1945 declaration of a boycott of "Jewish" and "Zionist" goods.

Whether waged by states or by NGOs, BDS is a form of economic warfare which has, so far, been as spectacular a failure as the parallel attempts by Arab armies to defeat Israel on the battlefield.  That doesn't, however, make it any more acceptable for an entity called the New Israel Fund to provide support to those who believe Israel shouldn't be there in the first place.

Please?

'I saw Ariel Sharon murder 2 Palestinian toddlers in Lebanon'

Israel officials call report by Dutch director George Sluizer a 'modern blood libel' after he director claimed to have seen then Defense Minster shooting children from close range near the Sabra-Shatilla refugee camp in 1982.
http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/i-saw-ariel-sharon-murder-2-palestinian-toddlers-in-lebanon-1.325540
By Cnaan Liphshiz

Dutch media this month published articles accusing Ariel Sharon of murdering Palestinian children in Lebanon. Former officials who worked with Sharon said the publications were false. The Israeli foreign ministry called the claim "a modern blood libel."

The claim first appeared in the Volkskrant, the third largest paper in the Netherlands, in an interview with the well-known Dutch-Jewish director George Sluizer. According to Sluizer, 78, he witnessed Sharon killing two Palestinian toddlers with a pistol in 1982 near the refugee camp Sabra-Shatilla while filming a documentary there.

"I met Sharon and saw him kill two children before my eyes," said Sluizer, who lives in Amsterdam. Sluizer has made several documentaries about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but is best known for directing The Vanishing with Jeff Bridges and Kiefer Sutherland in 1992.

Sluizer repeated the accusation in an interview for Vrij Nederland, an intellectual magazine, published on November 13 ahead of a screening of his film at the prestigious International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. "Sharon shot two children like you shoot rabbits, in front of my eyes," he said.

The children, according to Sluizer, "were toddlers, two or three years old. He shot them from a distance of 10 meters with a pistol that he carried. I was very close to him." Sluizer added he thought this happened in November, when Sharon was Israel's minister of defense, but he was not sure of the month.

His account was published in a special Volkskrant supplement for the film festival, which opened on Wednesday. The festival featured Sluizer's fourth and most recent film about Israel, in which he is filmed telling a Sharon effigy that he wished Sharon would have died at Auschwitz.

Sharon's successor as defense minister, Moshe Arens, said Sluizer's account was "a lie." According to Arens, "Sharon would never shoot a child and he was not in Lebanon in November of 1982. Thirdly, protocol prohibits ministers from wearing weapons. As civilians they are not allowed to carry firearms."

Amram Mitzna, former chairman of the Israeli Labor Party who served under Sharon as head of the Syrian front during the First Lebanon War, called Sluizer's account "total nonsense." Mitzna added: "I attacked Sharon politically over his decisions, but Sharon would never do a thing like that. It's completely ridiculous."

Yossef Levy, senior spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called Sluizer's account a "crude and disgraceful lie. It is hard to believe that any reasonable person would take seriously this kind of modern blood libel, which is not supported by a single shred of evidence."

In an interview for Haaretz, Sluizer said his cameraman Fred van Kuyk, who died a few years ago, also witnessed the shooting. Sluizer also said he had personally filed two complaints against Sharon in 1983, with the International Court of Justice in the Hague and the European Court of Human Right in Strasbourg.

Mr. Andrey Poskakukhin, head of the ICJ's information department, said the court had no registration of a complaint by Sluizer. An administrator for the court in Strasbourg said his institution had no record of such a complaint either.

"Any serious newspaper should be very careful in accusing a man who cannot defend himself of committing cold-blooded murder," said Ronny Naftaniel, director of the Center for Information and Documentation on Israel. He has written to Volkskrant's editor-in-chief to ask if the paper had tried to corroborate Sluizer's account before publication.

"Both papers seem to have published Sluizer's account without fact-checking it," Naftaniel also said. "It seems media tend to believe everything negative about Israel, not bothering to even check with their correspondents. In so doing, they are lending themselves to an anti-Israel witch hunt."

Mischa Cohen, who interviewed Sluizer for Vrij Nederland, said he had "tried to corroborate Sluizer's account" to the best of his ability. "There were some inconsistencies, but the article is mostly about Sluizer's anger" in relations to Israel's treatment of Palestinians.

"By the time my complaints arrived at their destination and should have been processed, minister of defense Sharon had become prime minister and therefore he was free of prosecution," Sluizer said. Sharon became prime minister in 2001, 18 years after Sluizer said he filed his complaints. Sluizer says he never received a reply from either institution.

"I was busy doing other things then, finishing filming and traveling the Soviet Union and other countries," Sluizer said when asked why he had not pursued the matter. He added he began thinking more about the shooting after surviving a near-fatal aneurism in 2007.

Some commentators say that after more than six decades of UNRWA assistance, Palestinian society has grown too dependent on aid. Last January, the Canadian government redirected help previously earmarked to UNRWA to democracy-building and accountability projects in the Palestinian Authority.

UNRWA strike closes schools, clinics in West Bank camps

Garbage piles up, too, as labor action enters second month; dispute gets personal; UNRWA criticized by Palestinians and abroad.

Schools and clinics are shuttered, and garbage has been piling up on streets across the West Bank's 19 refugee camps, as some 5,000 striking employees of the United Nations Works and Relief Agency (UNRWA) have brought critical public services to a halt in a pay dispute.

With the labor action now entering its second month, residents are growing angry and frustrated, and blame UNRWA for the problem. Dozens of people from the Deheisheh and Izza refugee camps near Bethlehem took to the streets Saturday in protest against what they termed the organization's unwavering position towards its staff.

"The strike is greatly harming Palestinian refugees," Isma'il Abu-Hashash, a striking UNRWA school principal from the Al-Fawwar refugee camp near Hebron, told The Media Line. "The biggest damage is caused to pupils, who have lost a month of school, in what has become a kind of prolonged summer vacation."

The camps, which have evolved over the decades since they were established into towns, are home to a large percentage of West Bank Palestinians, with the UN organization providing educational, health and social services. Some 56,000 pupils attend UNRWA schools and the organization operates about 30 clinics. Its annual budget of several-hundred-million dollars comes mainly from donor countries and the European Union.

In refugee camps across the West Bank piles of garbage were removed by private companies, volunteers and non-unionized UNRWA workers. Abu-Hashash said patients have found alternatives to UNRWA clinics in government hospitals or private clinics, but the lost school days were irretrievable.

"Our youth wander the streets unsupervised," he said. "This has resulted in serious social problems, which only exacerbate existing academic weaknesses."

UNRWA, a UN agency established in 1948, provides services to 4.8 million registered Palestinian refugees. Registered refugees are defined by UNRWA as residents of Palestine between June 1946 and May 1948 "who lost both their homes and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict." Descendents are also eligible for registration.

UNRWA's Union of Arab Employees ordered members to walk off their jobs October 14th after demands to be compensated for missed work during a strike in June went unanswered. The union claimed that a memorandum signed with management guaranteed them compensation for six of the days they were on strike – half of them by direct payment and half by working overtime. But, Sami Mshasha, a spokesman for UNRWA, denied any such agreement was reached.

"UNRWA maintains a policy of 'no work – no pay'," he told The Media Line. "It's unfortunate that a minor disagreement led the union to such an extreme measure, which harms hundreds of thousands of pupils. This issue could have been resolved at the negotiating table."

In fact, the labor dispute has generated personal animosities, with strikers blaming Barbara Shenstone, the West Bank field office director, for the deadlock and calling on her to leave the West Bank. Mshahsa condemned what he called the ad hominem attacks.

"It's lamentable and disgraceful that some union representatives turned the dispute into a personal matter," he said. "This has never happened before. Such ad hominem attacks against devoted UNRWA officials are unacceptable."

Despite the tensions, Abu-Hashash said he expected the dispute would soon be resolved due to direct intervention by Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and UNRWA Commissioner-General Filippo Grandi.

"The union shouldn't have been so rash in deciding on an open-ended strike in response to an unimportant issue," Abu-Hashash said. "However, UNRWA was very adamant in its negotiations. It should have been more flexible in finding a solution."

UNRWA claims that 1.4 million Palestinians, comprising 29% of all Palestinian refugees, reside in 58 recognized camps in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as well as in the neighboring Arab countries Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. It teaches half a million children in nearly 700 schools, making it one of the largest school systems in the Middle East.

The strike, which is confined to the West Bank, is only one of several problems confronting UNRWA, which many in Israel accuse of perpetuating the Palestinian refugee problem and abetting violence against Israelis. Last month, Israel's Defense Ministry rejected a UNRWA request to establish new schools in the Gaza Strip, contending that they would be built on land provided by Hamas and adjacent Hamas military installations.

Among Palestinians, UNRWA's activities have also generated opposition. Last May, a group of 30 armed men set fire to an UNRWA construction site in Gaza, leaving a threatening letter containing four bullets to Gaza UNRWA Director John Ging. Last week, Israel allowed four automatic weapons to enter Gaza to be used by UNWRA workers for self-defense.

Some commentators say that after more than six decades of UNRWA assistance, Palestinian society has grown too dependent on aid. Last January, the Canadian government redirected help previously earmarked to UNRWA to democracy-building and accountability projects in the Palestinian Authority.
