Judenrein

On the Honest Use of Language, Part 1

by Carlos

October 25, 2010 - This article is bound to make me unpopular with my colleagues as well as with my opposition, but some things need to be said.

Language has power, and is often used as a political tool. But that power cuts both ways, and sometimes the intention backfires. One example is the political slogan Judenrein

Judenrein literally means "cleansed of Jews." Cleansing Europe - and ultimately the world - of Jews was a key part of the Nazis' Aryanization program. The term Judenrein implies the eradication of every trace of Jewish blood from the land, the elimination of all impurity. It is a profoundly racist idea.

Today the use of Judenrein is meant to stir up strong feelings. It evokes the era of the Nazis. It is often coupled with "Never again!" - "Never again will we allow any place on earth to become Judenrein - a place forbidden to Jews, cleansed of Jews, purified of Jews."

Those who defend placing Israeli settlements anywhere in the Palestinian territories want to elicit these strong emotions when they make their case. They want people to think of the Nazis when contemplating any attempt, even by the Israeli government, to restrict or remove any settlement. We heard much of this rhetoric during the disengagement from Gaza. Israeli soldiers were likened to Nazis - by other Israelis!

So the argument goes like this: "Israelis have not only the right but the duty and the moral obligation to maintain Jewish settlements anywhere in the disputed territories. Not to allow these settlements would be once again to declare territory Judenrein - something the Nazis did and which we can absolutely never permit."

One can find no clearer example of this reasoning then the following statement by former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Moshe Arens strongly criticizing the policies of his political rivals:

The removal of the settlers from their homes in Gaza was part of a policy, or if you like an ideology, that cannot be called by any other name but Judenrein Palestine. In other words, certain parts of western Palestine, or using the generally accepted terminology in Israel, certain parts of the Land of Israel, need to be cleared of all Jews. This is the declared policy of the Olmert government, and it presumably is part of Tzipi Livni's negotiating position in her talks with her Palestinian counterparts....

The concept of removing all Jews from a certain region is surely repugnant to any person not prepared to deny somebody's rights on the grounds of his ethnic or religious origin. It brings back the worst memories of the tragedy that befell the Jewish people in World War II. When it is applied to a part of the Land of Israel it is also contrary to the very foundations of Zionism, a movement based on the right of Jews to settle and live in their land, a right that has received international recognition. (1)

Here we have it all: the strong emotion, the flawed logic, the evocation of the Nazis. The logical flaw is this: a settlement is not a Jew. Disallowing settlements, admitting they were a mistake, is not tantamount to exterminating Jews. Jews live in many countries as citizens of those countries and not in autonomous settlements. That does not make those countries Judenrein.

Palestinians have never said they would bar Jews from living in their state. They just don't want autonomous Jewish enclaves, which amount to extensions of Israeli territory, laced throughout it. This is how one Palestinian preacher and PA employee put it in a Friday sermon:

We welcome, as we did in the past, any Jew who wants to live in this land as a dhimmi, just as the Jews have lived in our countries, as dhimmis, and have earned appreciation, and some of them have even reached the positions of counselor or minister here and there. We welcome the Jews to live as dhimmis, but the rule in this land and in all the Muslim countries must be the rule of Allah.... Those from amongst the Jews and from amongst those who are not Jews who came to this land as plunderers, must return humiliated and disrespected to their countries. (2)

Dhimmis were Christian and Jewish minorities in Muslim lands who, though not forced to convert to Islam, were treated as second class. They were frequently humiliated (for example by being forced to wear distinctive dress and to keep to the side of the street, as prescribed by Sharia law), subject to special taxes, and their rights and liberties were severely restricted. Unlike the situation of Arab Israeli citizens today, this was truly a system of apartheid. So Palestinian intentions toward any Jewish minority within their state are hardly benign. Were Israel to make similar statements about its Arab citizens, there would be demonstrations and a deafening uproar all over the world. Palestinian plans for their prospective Jewish subjects cannot be defended.

Still, it is not a policy of Judenrein. It is not Jews who are barred from the Palestinian state, but only autonomous Jewish entities under Israeli control. I have asked the following question of many who claim that opposing these settlements means supporting Judenrein: "If Jewish villages, towns, and cities subject to Israeli authority must be permitted in a Palestinian state, would you then permit within Israel the formation of Arab villages, towns, and cities subject not to Israeli law but to the Palestinian Authority?" No one has yet answered that question and I'm still waiting.

Use of the term Judenrein has nothing to do with defending Jewish rights in a Palestinian state. It has everything to do with defending Israel's ill-advised settlements policy. If it were not for that policy the West Bank would today still be part of Jordan - the "Jordanian option" now so beloved among many on the Jewish right - and Gaza would be under Egyptian administration. We would not be facing the specter of a Palestinian terror base on Israel's borders.

There is simply no evidence that Palestinians are demanding a Judenrein state. Yes, they have said no Israeli citizens, but they have not said no Jews. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas did say "I will never allow a single Israeli to live among us on Palestinian land" (3). One cannot assume, however, that he meant "no Jews." He said "no Israelis"; i.e., no citizens of Israel. Abbas has been careful to make a distinction between Jews and Israeli citizens. Contrary to previous reports, he has said he will accept Jewish soldiers in a NATO peacekeeping force in Palestine, but no Israeli soldiers even if they are not Jewish (4).

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad was even more explicit. He said very clearly that Jews will be permitted to live in the state of Palestine:

Jews, to the extent they choose to stay and live in the state of Palestine, will enjoy those rights and certainly will not enjoy any less rights than Israeli Arabs enjoy now in the state of Israel. (5)

Can one really trust this promise that Jews in Palestine will enjoy the same rights as Arabs in Israel? Ever since the so-called "Golden Age" of Muslim Spain (which was not so golden if you were not Muslim), there has been a tendency toward greatly exaggerating the status of Jews in Muslim lands. That status has always been dhimmi status. As for today, let's be honest: Why should Jews living in an Islamic state expect any better treatment than Christians, gays, Bahais, or even women? Why should Jews expect better treatment in Palestine than they received in the numerous Arab countries from which they were forced to flee? Nevertheless, whether Jews living in the Palestinian state fare well or ill, under no stretch of the imagination can such a policy be called Judenrein.

Criticizing the misuse of Judenrein is in no way a defense of Palestinian policies. It is simply an insistence on honest language and valid argument. The Judenrein fallacy has been terrible for Israel's image and has been used against Israel by anti-Israel web sites. We do not need it and should finally drop it.

Echte humanitaire vredesactivisten, nietwaar?

Netanyahu: Shayetet 13 commandos acted 'heroically'

On visit to Atlit military base, PM "salutes" Navy seals involved in "vital, imperative, important and legal" raid of Gaza-bound flotilla.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyhau paid a special visit to the Atlit military base in northern Israel on Tuesday, to praise the Shayetet 13 commandos who participated in Israel's Naval interception of the Mavi Marmara last May.

"Gaza has become an Iranian terror base — very close and very dangerous," Netanyahu told the fighters. The raid was "vital, imperative, important and legal," he added.

Facing a deadly threat, "you responded professionally, heroically, with restraint and ethically."

After Netanyahu delivered his remarks, he met privately with some of the commandos on the base, including one who is still recovering from injuries sustained when activists seized him and threw onto a lower deck. Gidi Schmerling, Netanyahu's spokesman, said the commando told Netanyahu he sought to return to active duty.

He was among four commandos wounded in the operation who met with Netanyahu.

Addressing the commandos who had been wounded, the prime minister said, "I am happy to see those who were injured, and I salute you all. You acted in the name of the State of Israel."

The commandos violently clashed with pro-Palestinian activists on one of the Gaza-bound ships, resulting in nine fatalities. Both sides have accused the other of sparking the violence.

At the end of his comments, Netanyahu thanked Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi who accompanied him on the tour, and said the Shayetet 13 fighters proved the IDF chief's determination during his four years in the position.

Zoals in meerdere vredesvoorstellen is aangegeven.

As the conversation progresses, it becomes clear that these are not the only strange ideas Sanad has. "I am pro-Israel," he says. "I don't want to take part in anti-Semitic operations or those that negate Israel's right to exist in the region. I see Israel as a liberal, modern state with a religious character. I have friends in Israel and I think Israelis have a right to defend themselves."

He explains his attitude to Israel thus: "From a young age I read a lot about the Israeli-Arab conflict. I understood the Arab media hid facts that support Israel. I tried to contact Israeli activists and started asking them questions, such as, 'Is it true that Israel is a militaristic state?' or, 'Is it true that Israel wants to expand and reach the Nile? That's how I learned. I understood a lot about the state, society and its laws. Many Arabs living in Israel told me how they are really treated and how much they prefer living in Israel above any Arab state. I also read about Israeli pacifist organizations."

Maikel Nabil Sanad claims he's first conscientious objector in Egypt, blames Palestinians for conflict, says doesn't want to shoot Israeli defending his state

Roee Nahmias

Published: 10.25.10, 11:52

Maikel Nabil Sanad is perhaps the most unusual Egyptian you've heard of recently. He is 25 years old, a veterinarian, graduate of a university in Asyut, and now officially a conscientious objector to military service in the Egyptian army.

"The army told me its final decision was that I must present myself for an officers' course on October 22 in Fayid and start obligatory service of three years," he wrote on his blog last week. "I thought about this a lot and decided to refuse to serve in the Egyptian army, and accept the results, whatever they would be, even though I knew the results would be hard because I am the first young Egyptian to refuse to serve for pacifist reasons."

Sanad also explained his decision: "I am a pacifist, I am against bearing arms and participating in military and paramilitary organizations. Recruitment goes against my conscience. I don't want to act against my conscience, whatever the price. I also am not willing to be a pawn on the chessboard of an arms race, struggles and bloodbaths in the region. I don't want to point a weapon at a young Israeli, recruited into obligatory service, defending his state's right to exist. I think obligatory service is a form of slavery and I have worked for years for my freedom."

He claims the military establishment began a propaganda campaign against him. "They accused me of collaboration, of treachery, of working for foreign interests. In light of this campaign, I began fearing for my life if I were to serve in the army, especially in an organization that enjoys censorship, a non-neutral military judicial system etc. In my desire to preserve my life, even if I sit in jail for years, I prefer this to the adventure of being killed in the army."

Conscientious objection in Syria too

This is certainly unusual case of an unusual young man, and when one speaks with him his unusual thinking is also evident – certainly to Israeli ears.

"Though they haven't contacted me directly, they managed to get the message to me that I should sign up, but I decided against it," he said to Ynet. "I thought about it a lot and decided this because I am a pacifist and believe in peace."

Sanad says he is not a lone voice. "I lead a political movement called 'No to Obligatory Service.' Some 20 or 30 activists work on the ground but our Facebook group has some 3,000 members. And what's more, I was happy to learn that our ideas took wing in the Arab world, and a similar group with similar ideas has been set up in Syria. I am trying to spread the ideas as much as I can."

The young Egyptian doesn't even hesitate to say the Palestinians are to blame for the conflict with Israel. "If the Palestinians had a democratic leadership, everything would be solved," he says. "Take the war on Gaza for example (Operation Cast Lead) two years ago. Hamas started it. They refused to hold elections in Gaza and took control of the regime. They planned a dictatorial and fundamentalist regime. They refused to speak to Israel, fired rockets at it and caused it to defend itself."

He says the IDF response to the rockets was "normal" compared to any nation in the world. "I don't see what the difference is between that and Turkey's response against the Kurds in northern Iraq. It's exactly the same."

'They say I'm a spy'

When asked if he is afraid to express such views in public, he says, "I have been speaking like this for eight years already, and I have been arrested a few times for political reasons. It's not new. I am a serious supporter of peace, tolerance and mutual forgiveness."

He adds that he fears nothing. "I have lived all my life under risk and I'm used to it," he claims. "They are already saying in the Egyptian media that I'm a spy."

Despite his love for Israel, he has not had a chance to visit because Egypt forbids his exit from the country. "I am forbidden from leaving for the next three years because of the military service I am supposed to do, and I imagine this prohibition will be extended," he says, but also notes that "the Israeli nation must know there are many Egyptians who support it, that we love Israel and support its right to exist. The picture painted by the media that all Egyptians hate Israel is false. This picture is not correct, and I want to make that clear to you."

Turkse Free Gaza activisten op bezoek bij Islamitische Jihad

Turkish 'peace activists' visit Jihad gunmen

On backdrop of strained relations between Israel and Turkey, Islamic Jihad website displays photos of recent flotilla's Turkish passengers visiting Gaza and trying on organization's uniform. 'All Turkish people pray for your victory,' one of guests says

The Viva Palestina 5 ship carrying "peace activists," which docked at the al-Arish port recently, brought along not only humanitarian aid to the residents of Gaza, but also enthusiastic Turks who took advantage of the opportunity to visit local Islamic Jihad members.

In pictures obtained by Ynet, the Turks are seen holding weapons and rocket launchers. While their prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues to blast Israel and demand an apology for "state terrorism," two of the guests put on the uniform of the al-Quds Brigades, the Islamic Jihad's military wing.

The pictures from the Turkish delegation's visit were put on the al-Quds Brigades website as part of the coverage of their visit. The guests' face was blurred, but shortly afterwards the photos were removed from the site, most likely for fear that the Turks would be hurt.

During their visit to Gaza, the Turkish delegation members visited several Islamic Jihad posts. One of the guests was quoted as telling the group's gunmen that they are "a source of pride for all decent people in the Arab and Muslim world." He defined them as "the forefront of the struggle against the Zionists."

The Turkish guests praised the Palestinian activists, saying, "I am proud to be here with you, who have sacrificed so much for the sake of the Muslim nation. All of the Turkish people, as well as the Arabs and all Muslims, pray for your victory, support you and strengthen you."

Meanwhile Monday, the Turkel Committee appointed to probe the deadly Navy raid on the Turkish-owned Marmara ship in late May, heard the testimonies of two Israeli Arabs who were onboard the vessel during the incident.

One of the them, Hamed Abu Dabous of Rahat was asked by the committee members about a televised speech in which one of the flotilla's leaders called for violent resistance and said that if Israel Defense Forces soldiers tried to take over the boat, "we'll thrown them into the sea."

Abu Dabous responded that he was not "a television fan", adding that he knew nothing of that speech. He claimed that he was a law abiding citizen and was unaware of the prohibition to enter the Strip.

"If what you wanted would have happened, you would have reached Gaza. So your intention was indeed to break the law," one of the committee members told him.

German faked conversion to board 'Jewish' Gaza boat

Television producers face flak for false report, say "not customary to pressure people to produce conversion documents before interviews."

BERLIN – The German passenger aboard the Irene catamaran that tried to break Israel's blockade of Gaza last month appears to have invented her conversion to Judaism, Berlin's Der Tagesspiegel newspaper reported on Tuesday.

"Edith Lutz is definitely a Jew, like a smoked pork chop is kosher," reporter Henryk M.Broder wrote.

The Irene, organized by the British NGO Jews for Justice for Palestinians, supposedly carried a total of nine passengers and crew members, all Jews, to show that not all Jews supported Israel's Gaza policies. The Israel Navy diverted it to Ashdod Port.

According to the Tagesspiegel report, the German Jewish psychologist Dr. Rolf Verleger asked Lutz if she formally converted to Judaism, and she "did not dispel the suspicion" that she is not Jewish.

The German television program ARD-Magazin Monitor broadcast a widely-seen report in June, in which Lutz was named as a representative of  "Jews from Germany," and as part of a group of Germans Jews who want to show that "they are not in agreement with the policies of Israel."

Monitor's producers have been accused of sloppy journalism for failing to diligently factcheck Lutz's credentials as a converted Jew, and turning her into a representative of Germany's 106,000 Jews.

The conservative Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily on Wednesday termed the Monitor report "embarrassing" and noted that many German news organizations have paraded Lutz as a "prominent spokesperson for the organization 'Jews for a Just Peace in the Middle East' – and she is not a Jew."

Sonia Seymour Mikich, the editor-in-chief of Monitor, seemed to duck the criticisms in a statement on why the program presented a woman masquerading as a converted Jew.

It "is not customary for Monitor to pressure people to produce baptismal and conversion documents in order to conduct interviews," she wrote.

Mikich further noted that Lutz wishes to "continue to protect her private life."

Many German journalists devote a great deal of coverage to fringe Jews who bash the Jewish state.

The popular pro-Israeli blogger website Lizas Welt wrote on Tuesday that Lutz's tirades against Israel are "what the majority in Germany wants to hear."

Lizas Welt slammed Lutz's "verbal attacks on Israel" as including equating the Jewish state's actions with those of the Nazis.

Lutz has stated that the Israeli government issued her passport without a "deportation stamp." The word "deportation" in a German context carries a Nazi-era connotation from the time when Europe's Jews were deported to extermination camps.

Nathan Gelbart, the Berlin-based attorney who heads the German branch of Keren Hayesod-United Israel Appeal, told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday that "over 7 million people live in Israel's democracy, which, in contrast to their more than 30 million Arab neighbors, are allowed to openly discuss the controversy surrounding the appropriateness of the sea blockade of Gaza. And Israelis openly discuss the blockade.

"Edith Lutz, whether Jew or non-Jew, is needed in Israel as much as her three backpacks that she sought to bring to Gaza – that is to say, not at all."

According to a report from Ulrich Sahm, a veteran journalist in Israel, Lutz brought three backpacks that contained stuffed animals, second hand toys and musical instruments on the Irene.

Palestijnse cartoon plaatst Israel veroveren voor onderwijs

[Text in teacher's book: "a, b, c, d, e, f ... p, q r, s, t..."
Text in child's mind: "[Map of Palestine covering Israel] a, b, c..."

[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 19, 2010]

Replacing Israel with "Palestine"
more important than education:
PA daily cartoon
http://palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=157&doc_id=3455

by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik

The idea of a "Palestine" that replaces Israel is more important to Palestinian children than education. That was the message of a cartoon in the official PA daily newspaper last week. A second message in the cartoon was that Palestinian youth are prepared to use violence.

The cartoon shows a teacher teaching a Palestinian child the letters of the alphabet. However, the text in the child's mind shows that he visualizes the map of "Palestine" replacing all of Israel before he starts learning the alphabet. The cartoon also carries a message of violence, as the child's pencil is shaped as a slingshot with a stone next to it.

Palestinian Media Watch has documented that during the five years of the Palestinian terror campaign, from 2000 - 2005, the Palestinian Authority used all the communication channels it controlled to actively encourage children to participate in the violence.

'Hizbullah trained Iraqis how to kidnap soldiers'

WikiLeaks docs describe Iranian border shootouts, Revolutionary Guard weapons transfers to Iraq; Will release 15,000 new Afghan war files.

Inside the some 400,000 US military documents released by WikiLeaks on Friday, were stories of tense and deadly border incidents on the Iraqi-Iranian frontier, Hizbullah training Iraqi operatives, and unmanned US surveillance aircraft lost deep in Iranian territory.

One such document made available to The New York Times by WikiLeaks, was a military report describing a 2006 encounter between a joint American-Iraqi patrol on the Iranian border that ended with one Iranian soldier dead and a handful of Iraqi soldiers detained in Iran.

The US Army report said that the joint patrol was approached and subsequently surrounded by several Iranian military vehicles. When the Americans noticed  additional Iranian troops tactically positioning themselves and encircling the patrol, they decided to leave.

As the American half of the patrol began to leave the area, the Iranian troops began firing upon them. When the US army unit saw an Iranian soldier with a rocket-propelled grenade pointed at them, they shot and killed him with a 50-caliber weapon. The cross-border exchange of fire continued for several minutes until the Americans were out of range.

The Iraqi unit involved, who had apparently dismounted their vehicles without their weapons, were captured by the Iranians and later released.

Hizbullah trained Iraqis in "precision military style kidnappings"

Another document released described Iraqi operatives being trained in conducting "precision military style kidnappings" by Hizbullah near Qum in Iran.

One operative, chosen because of his Hizbullah training, was alleged to have meticulously planned an attack in which American troops would be kidnapped inside a Baghdad tunnel. The attack was to have utilized improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and small arms to disable the American vehicles, reminiscent of Hizbullah tactics seen in Lebanon.

The attack never took place, but the operative was thought to be responsible for the kidnapping of an Iraqi government minister in late 2006.

Also included in the huge cache of documents was a military report describing intercepted weapons shipments from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. The  report said that one seized shipment coming from the Revolutionary Guards into Iraq contained high explosives, ammunition, and surface-to-air missile heads.

Other stories included in the released documents described a suspected Iranian-funded assassination program in Iraq, and unmanned surveillance aircraft drifting into Iranian territory, some of which were never recovered.

Detained American hikers were on Iraqi side of the border

The three Americans detained by Iran in July 2009 for alleged illegal entry were on the Iraqi side of the border at the time, according to a US military report written on the day of their arrest, found among the cache of WikiLeaks documents posted Friday.

"The leadership in Iran benefits as it focuses the Iranian population on a perceived external threat rather than internal dissension," the report said.

The document, a field report not meant as a definitive account or a conclusive assessment, was reported first by The New York Times on its website Friday. It was among nearly 400,000 secret US military documents revealed by WikiLeaks.

The US military report described "a kidnapping of 3 Americans who were being taken to the Iranian border. The Americans were hiking near the Iranian border when taken." An update later in the day said an Iraqi colonel reported that the three had been detained "for being too close to the border."

The US State Department has repeatedly urged Iran to release the three — Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, saying they did nothing wrong. Iran claims they illegally crossed the border to spy. Shourd was released in September after complaining of health problems; the two others remain in prison in Iran.

Wikileaks on Saturday said that it will soon publish 15,000 more secret Afghan war documents.

WikiLeaks has said the 15,000 additional Afghan files were held back because of their sensitive content. Kristinn Hrafnsson of WikiLeaks told reporters Saturday in London that the documents had now been fully vetted for release and will be published shortly.

He said the Iraq documents have been edited to conceal people's names and "contain no information that could be harmful to individuals."

Yossi Beilin: Israelis behind Oslo never thought about future, final agreement
Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 27 August 2010

Excerpts from: Yossi Beilin - Interview by Ari Shavit "Yossi removes his  glasses" Haaretz Magazine, March 7, 1997
[Translation by IMRA]

Shavit: When you entered the Oslo process, Rabin, Peres and you, was it clear to you that this was going towards a Palestinian state?

Beilin: No. It is very interesting to note that the talks of the soul regarding "where will this process lead" took place only between the sides, not within them.within the Labor party and within the government and within the negotiating team I don't recall any real and serious discussion of the final solution.

Shavit: I don't understand.  In 1992 you were elected to the government.  In 1993 you created the Oslo process.  At no stage did you ask yourselves where this all was leading to?

Beilin: No.

Shavit: You never spoke with Rabin about the significance of Oslo in the long run?

Beilin: Never.

Shavit: And with Peres?

Beilin: I also never spoke with Peres about it.

Shavit: That's to say that we are going to an historic process that is second to none in its drama and at no stage you don't say "wait a moment, let's think about this", let's check where we are basically going?

Beilin: By Rabin, avoidance of the final arrangement was a kind of policy. He pushed it off.  After he died I sat with Leah Rabin and I said to her - if someone could have known what final arrangement Rabin had in mind it's only you.  She told me - "Look, I can't tell you.  He was very pragmatic, hated to deal with what will be in many more years.  He thought about what will be now, very soon.  To the best of my knowledge he did not have a very clear picture of what the final arrangement would be"

Rabin thought that things would develop, saw something instrumental like that, some autonomy that might become a state and might not.  He did not have a clear picture.
.
Shavit: The question that must be raised is if the decisions of Oslo were made at all in a rational process?

Beilin: In general there aren't rational processes.  Rationality, at the end, is almost always rationalizing.  When you look at these kinds of processes you find that almost always the things happen out of internal feelings of the participants that they are doing the right thing.  Out of their emotions and intuition and personal experience.
.
Shavit: have you considered at times, that maybe, because of 1948, the complications of the dispute make it unsolvable?

Beilin: Yes.  It occurs to me.  But I immediately utterly reject it.  I see myself as an absolute rationalist and I want to live a rational world.  I very much want to live in a world in which there is a solution to our existential problems that is possible.  I have no proof that this is indeed the situation.  This is like being an optimist.  Is an optimist convinced that the pessimist is always wrong?  No.  He simply convinces himself that things will be good.  That it will be OK.  And then he also does everything in order to insure that he is right.  That's the way I am.

I simply am not prepared to live in a world in which things cannot be resolved.

Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict;
Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force;

http://www.refdag.nl/nieuws/buitenland/israel_en_vn_hebben_een_ongemakkelijke_relatie_1_510201
21-10-2010 08:51 | Mr. Richard Donk

Lake Succes, 29 november 1947.

IDF presents: 'Soldier-free' checkpoint control

New electronic ID system that uses handprints 'will make passage more pleasant,' IDF source says

Hanan Greenberg the Jerusalem Post

While direct talks languish, the Israel Defense Forces have found a way to minimize friction between soldiers and the Palestinians. After years in which residents of the territories had to present entry permits and IDs on the way to work in Israel, the IDF has prepared a "soldier-free" entry procedure.

Soldiers will soon be replaced by electronic terminals checking the Palestinians by hand prints.

A military source involved in the project said the IDF-made devices will shorten the time Palestinians spend in checkpoints and create a "more pleasant atmosphere."

The new system, which greatly resembles the biometric passport control at the Ben-Gurion Airport, "speaks" Arabic with the users. After identifying the hand print and checking personal details on an electronic card the system quickly authorizes entry into Israel.

"A new situation has emerged in the territories with the creation of the security fence. The importance of mainatianing the Palestinian citizens' quality of life has become more heightened," the source explained.

He also noted that some 25,000 workers from the territories enter Israel every day.

"Up until now, one would have needed to visit a manned post, present an ID and wait for the soldier's entry permit. We realized a change was needed and that's how the project was conceived," the military source noted.

A few electronic posts have already been placed at some of the crossings between Israel and the West Bank as part of the pilot program.

"We tested the device's function and found it to be extremely user-friendly, shortening lines and rendering the crossing more pleasant," he noted.

"We also added a device at the entry into Israel for those returning from Palestinian cities, which increases our ability to accurately control the traffic of those coming in and those going out."

In light of the project's success Central Command Chief Avi Mizrahi has recently approved the installation of 12 electronic control terminals in checkpoints around the Green Line as early as next year. The IDF plans on equipping those terminals with other ID programs, including facial print checks.

"The system is coded and can receive data in real time. If we have information suggesting that an entry pass should be revoked the system is immediately informed," the source said.

Guess what happened this week in an area that UNRWA built a housing project and schools right next to a Hamas facility in Rafah?
Three UNRWA schools were damaged and 26 were injured, including 17 children, from an explosion at the Hamas training base. And the base seems to have been there when UNRWA built the housing project and three schools that were damaged.

Hamas and UNRWA agree: schoolchildren should be human shields (updated)

http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/2010/10/hamas-and-unrwa-agree-schoolchildren.html

From JPost:

The United Nations Relief and Work Agency asked for permission to build several schools in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood in southern Gaza City, according to details obtained by The Jerusalem Post.

The request was submitted to the Defense Ministry in line with current Israeli policy to approve international projects in Gaza after they have received the approval of donor nations and the Palestinian Authority.

Since Israel eased the blockade on the Gaza Strip in July, the office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories has approved 70 international projects – including the renovation of a sewage treatment plant, the construction of 151 housing units and eight new schools.

But when the Defense Ministry received the UNRWA request for the new schools and checked their planned location, defense officials said they were alarmed to discover that the UN had planned to build the schools adjacent to a Hamas military installation.

"We were shocked to see that some of the schools sent for approval were right next to Hamas," one official told the Post on Thursday.

The Defense Ministry contacted UNRWA and asked if it was aware that Hamas maintained a military installation nearby. The answer the Defense Ministry received was "yes," according to Israeli officials, with UNRWA acknowledging that Hamas had allocated the land for the schools.

Chris Gunness, a spokesman for UNRWA, confirmed the details of the report but claimed that the Hamas installation in question was severely damaged by Israel during Operation Cast Lead and questioned whether it still served as a military facility.

IDF sources said that the building functioned as a Hamas base during Operation Cast Lead and continued to serve as a base today.

Gunness said that due to the Defense Ministry's decision, UNRWA would not be able to build the schools, and therefore thousands of Palestinian children will be educated by Hamas instead of the UN.

"There is an acute shortage of UNRWA schools in that area, and as a result of the shortage more children beyond the 39,000 who are already not receiving a UN education will continue to receive local education instead," Gunness said. "It is a great pity that we can't have children in Gaza receive a UN education based on universal values."

Defense sources said that Israel was committed to the UNRWA education system but that Israel would not allow Hamas to cynically use schools and children in its terrorist war against Israel.
UNRWA'a Gunness doesn't even pretend to be concerned that the UNRWA schools would be in the line of fire if - and when - Hamas uses the adjacent terror bases and Israel responds. Moreover, he doesn't seem concerned that the kids could become victims of one of the regular "work accidents" that occur at Hamas facilities.

And Gunness would be the last person to publicly accuse and embarrass Hamas, telling them that the land they are offering is unacceptable and that the safety of the children is of paramount importance. No, all of UNRWA's demands are from Israel, and Hamas is positioned a wonderful patron of the organization for offering land where the kids could get blown up. (A wonderful patron that happens to attack UNRWA facilities as well.)

If the military installation is damaged and unused, as Gunness implies, then why not convert that into the school?

Gunness and UNRWA are obfuscating, as they do so often.

Some 21 confirmed terrorists were killed in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood during Operation Cast Lead.

UPDATE:

The Jerusalem Post
Foxman: US must stop Palestinians from declaring state
By GIL HOFFMAN
10/21/2010 05:15
http://www.jpost.com/International/Article.aspx?id=192195

Anti-Defamation League head says "pipe dream" of declaring statehood without making concessions or sacrifices must be given up.

US President Barack Obama's administration must take steps to prevent Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas from declaring the creation of a state unilaterally.

So said Anti-Defamation League national director Abe Foxman in an interview with The Jerusalem Post Tuesday night.

Foxman, who has been a close adviser to American presidents on Israel and other issues for decades, said immediate action was needed by Obama in light of reports that the Palestinians were considering declaring a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The declaration, Foxman added, might be supported by the European Union and United Nations.

"I am frustrated by the silence and hesitancy of the [Obama] administration on Palestinian talk of unilaterally declaring a state. Now is the time to send a message to the Palestinians and Middle Eastern and European nations that the US will not tolerate and sanction this, because if it doesn't send that message, it will undermine Israel's feeling that the negotiations with the Palestinian Authority will be conducted in good faith."

Foxman added that now was the ideal time to make this clear to the Palestinians, because Obama had demonstrated he would continue to single out Israel publicly on settlements – as in his September 23 speech to the United Nations General Assembly. Foxman noted that State Department spokesman Philip Crowley declined to address the matter in a recent press conference.

"It needs to be made clear to the Palestinians that they have to give up this pipe dream that their Arab and Europeans friends will give them a state without them having them to make concessions or sacrifices," said Foxman.

http://www.volkskrant.nl/vk/nl/2664/Nieuws/article/detail/1037931/2010/10/24/Joden-mogen-zich-niet-langer-betitelen-als-het-uitverkoren-volk.dhtml

Abed Rabbo condemned the demand as "another Israeli lie." He said that Israeli right-wingers were raising the demand because they want to 'Judaize" Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and not only Israel.

He claimed that those who were making this demand were seeking to "legalize" Jewish presence on Palestinian territories while turning the Palestinians into illegal residents.

'PA may break Oslo Accords if peace talks fail'

"One party can't remain committed while the other party has violated the agreements," says PLO official Yasser Abed Rabbo in 'Al-Hayat' interview.

The Palestinian Authority hinted over the weekend that it would unilaterally abrogate the Oslo Accords that were signed between Israel and the PLO in 1993 if the peace process fails.

"We can't remain committed to the agreements that were signed with Israel forever," said Yasser Abed Rabbo, a senior PLO official who serves as an advisor to PA President Mahmoud Abbas. "One party can't remain committed while the other party has violated the agreements and even canceled them."

Abed Rabbo said that the time could come when the Palestinians would "reconsider" their commitment to the accords "if the Israelis continued with the same policy."

He said that the Palestinians were also considering the option of seeking US and UN recognition of a Palestinian state on all the territories that were captured by Israel in 1967.

Abed Rabbo's latest threat, which was made in an interview with the pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat, marks yet another escalation in the PA's rhetorical attacks on Israel in the past few days.

Abed Rabbo and several other top Palestinian officials have recently launched a scathing attack on Israel, accusing the government of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu of "spreading lies" and "deception."

The strong criticism of Israel escalated after Netanyahu refused to extend a 10-month moratorium on settlement construction that expired in late September.

Since then different Palestinian officials have vehemently rejected Netanyahu's demand that the Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

Abed Rabbo said that the PLO had already recognized the existence of Israel when it signed the Oslo Accords in 1993. "Back then, all we got from Israel was recognition of the PLO as the body representing the Palestinians," he added. "We didn't get from Israel recognition of the Palestinian state and its borders. Unfortunately, our recognition [of Israel] was complete, while their recognition was partial and insufficient. This is the situation today and we must not repeat the mistakes of the past."

Asked if Palestinian negotiators sensed any change in Netanyahu, the PLO official replied: "The belief that Netanyahu has changed since the first time he was prime minister is nonsense. Why should he change when the right-wing parties in Israel have become stronger?"

Abed Rabbo said that the Palestinians still haven't received "new ideas" about finding a solution to the crisis surrounding Israel's refusal to extend the settlement freeze.

"Apparently, the Americans have given Israel some offers to encourage them to return to the negotiating table," he said. "Some of these offers include a promise to supply Israel with new weapons. This is something related to bilateral relations between Israel and the US and we don't care. But we have made it clear to the Americans that that they should not be talking to Israel about anything that may affect the future of the Palestinian territories. They must not talk to Israel about the future of the Jordan Valley, Jerusalem or the settlement blocs that Israel wants to keep."

"We recognize, as I think most do, although it's not a position that we publicly articulate, that the right of return is unlikely to be exercised to the territory of Israel to any significant or meaningful extent," he said. "It's not a politically palatable issue, it's not one that UNRWA publicly advocates, but nevertheless it's a known contour to the issue."

'Hamas in contact with most foreign nations'

UNRWA official Andrew Whitley calls on Palestinians to prepare refugees for near certainty that they will never return to Israel.

WASHINGTON – A senior UNRWA official broached two largely taboo topics at a conference in Washington on Friday, saying governments across Europe and the world have had contacts with Hamas and that Palestinian refugees should acknowledge that they will almost certainly not be returning to Israel.

Andrew Whitley, due to soon leave his post as director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency's New York Representative Office, told the National Council for US-Arab Relations' annual conference that contacts with Hamas were commonplace.

"I think it's fair to say that all governments, whether they admit it or not, have had discrete contact with Hamas," Whitley said. He singled out Norway, Switzerland and Germany as "quietly" having contacts.

Germany has been involved in discussions over a prisoner exchange with Israel for IDF solider Gilad Schalit, whom Hamas has held since 2006.

Whitley suggested that contacts were important as part of efforts to unify the divided Palestinian government as well as alleviate suffering in Gaza.

Whitley also said that Palestinians must start acknowledging that the refugees will almost certainly not be returning to Israel so that they can improve their situation.

Palestinians have long maintained a "right of return" to Israel and the homes they – or their parents and grandparents fled – in Israel 1948 War of Independence. The issue has been one of the most difficult to resolve in peace negotiations.

"If one doesn't start a discussion soon with the refugees for them to consider what their own future might be -- for them to start debating their own role in the societies where they are rather than being left in a state of limbo where they are helpless but preserve rather the cruel illusions that perhaps they will return one day to their homes -- then we are storing up trouble for ourselves," he declared.

Whitley acknowledged that few Palestinians and even officials in his own organization have been willing to publicly discuss the issue.

There are now 4.8 million Palestinian refugees, the descendants of less than 1 million who left present-day Israel in 1948. These people are most likely to remain either in Gaza and the West Bank or their current host countries of Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, though Whitley noted a very small number might be absorbed elsewhere in the world.

Though UNRWA currently ministers to the Palestinian refugees needs rather than resettles them, Whitley suggested this is a role the organization might take on.

The case of the Palestinian refugees is one of the most important issues in the Israeli-Arab conflict. It needs to be solved for once and for all -- and immediately. The refugees have the legitimate and moral right to continue dreaming about their original villages and towns. But the Arab and Palestinian governments do not have the right to continue lying to these people.

The Palestinian Refugees: Why Is Everyone Lying To Them?
by Khaled Abu Toameh

Palestinian Authority leaders are now saying that they will never recognize Israel as a Jewish state because that would mean that they would have to give up the "right of return" for millions of Palestinians to their original homes inside Israel.

These leaders are actually continuing to deceive the refugees into believing that one day they will be permitted to move into Israel.

The Palestinian Authority, like the rest of the Arab governments, has been lying to the refugees for decades, telling them that one day their dream of returning to their villages and towns, many of which no longer exist, would be fulfilled.

Meanwhile, the refugees are continuing to live in harsh conditions in their UNRWA-administered camps in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

No Arab or Palestinian leader has ever dared to confront the refugees with the truth, namely that they are not going to move into Israel. On the contrary, Palestinian and Arab leaders continue to tell these people that they will go back to their former villages and towns.

Arab and Palestinian governments are lying to the refugees because they want to avoid any responsibility toward their plight. The Arab governments hosting the refugees have done almost nothing to improve the living conditions of the refugees.

On the contrary, Palestinian refugees living in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan have long been subjected the victims of racism and other repressive and unjust measures and laws that deprive them even of basic rights. Governments such as Jordan receive a payment for each refugee, turning the refugees into nothing more than property, like stocks on Wall Street.

Since its establishment in 1994, the Palestinian Authority has also done very little to help the refugees. In the West Bank, most of the international aid is being invested in major cities such as Ramallah, Nablus, Bethlehem and Jenin, as well as scores of villages.

UNRWA is also not offering a solution to the refugees. Instead, the UN agency is perpetuating the problem by creating new generations of refugees. UNRWA is in fact encouraging the refugees to stay where they are. For UNRWA, refugees are a gigantic UN jobs program, providing over 30,000 of them, costing over $1 billion USD a-year, or, according to separate sources, a third of all other UN regugee services combined.

The issue of the refugees can easily be solved if the entire international community, with the help of the Arab world, gets together to find a solution. Israel alone will never be able to solve the problem.

The refugees should be offered financial compensation or resettlement in Arab and other countries. Those who wish to move to a Palestinian state that is established alongside Israel in the future should not be denied that right. Arab countries should be urged to absorb Palestinian refugees.

Western countries should also participate by taking some of the refugees and offering them a new life. Why not establish an international fund that would offer financial compensation to those who lost their homes and lands? And let us not forget that there are also hundreds of thousands of Jewish "refugees" who lost their properties in Arab countries.

The world needs to tell the Palestinian refugees that while they are entitled to many rights, they must forget about returning to Jaffa, Haifa and other places inside Israel.

The issue of the Palestinian refugees can be solved only when a courageous Arab or Palestinian leader confronts them with the truth. As long as the refugees are being fed with false hopes, there can be no solution.
