Het is natuurlijk bekend, maar cynisch is het wel, dat een paar doden in Israel of de Palestijnse gebieden voorpagina nieuws zijn terwijl we van veel andere en veel dodelijker conflicten niet eens het bestaan kennen. Hier worden allemaal relatief bekende en populaire zaken genoemd. Er woeden echter tientallen bloedige conflicten in de wereld die volkomen onbekend zijn en die ons volkomen koud laten. Betekent dat dat je je niet om de Palestijnen mag bekommeren? Nee natuurlijk, maar het maakt wel onze selectiviteit duidelijk. Wanneer blijkt dat men niet alleen doden elders negeert, maar ook Palestijnse doden en Palestijns lijden zodra niet Israel de boosdoener is, wordt het natuurlijk wel erg verdacht.

Misschien zou het een simpele oplossing zijn voor vrede in het Midden-Oosten als Israel zijn naam verandert in Noorwegen.
Maar nog makkellijker is de OCID van de wereld in beeld te brengen met Google Trends: in het plaatje hierboven is de populariteit van de zoekterm "israel" vergeleken met die van "darfur", "iran", "iraq" and "aids". Toelichting verder helemaal overbodig, toch?

The ninth anniversary of 9/11 will witness two eagles, Geert Wilders and Newt Gingrich appearing at a ground zero event in opposition to Mega mosque project, the Cordoba House initiative that received NYC Landmarks Commission approval this week.
That should catch the attention of the mainstream media, given Wilders rise to prominence in the new minority ruling coalition in the Netherlands. Then there is speculation about Gingrich making a possible 2012 run for the GOP Presidential nomination.

I first visited an Islamic country in 1982. I was 18 years old and had traveled with a Dutch friend from Eilat in Israel to the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh.
We were two almost penniless backpacking students. We slept on the beaches and found hospitality with Egyptians, who spontaneously invited us to tea. I clearly recall my very first impression of Egypt: I was overwhelmed by the kindness, friendliness and helpfulness of its people.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Maverick Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders says he is launching an international "freedom alliance" to spread his anti-Islam message across the West.
He told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday he will launch the international movement late this year, initially in five countries: the United States, Canada, Britain, France and Germany.

Wilders nominated for free speech prize

Dutch Euro-MP Barry Madlener, who is a member of the Freedom party, has put forward his party leader Geert Wilders as a candidate for the Sakharov Prize. The prize, named after the Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, is awarded annually by the European parliament to individuals and organisations that have contributed significantly to freedom of speech.

Dutch Queen Beatrix does not like Member of Parliament Geert Wilders, the winner of the recent elections in the Netherlands; she is attempting to prevent the formation of a right-wing coalition that includes him.
The maneuvers to exclude Mr. Wilders have angered ordinary Dutchmen. Asked to comment on television, many voters could be heard complaining, "What is the use of going to vote when we are not listened to anyway?"
June's general elections in the Netherlands resulted in a clear victory for the right. The Dutch Constitution, however, grants the Queen the power to appoint a person (or persons) of her choice to initiate and direct negotiations for the formation of a government coalition. By appointing the Labor politician Herman Tjeenk Willink to the position of formation facilitator, the Queen has made it clear that she wants a coalition that includes the Labor Party and excludes the Freedom Party of Geert Wilders.
