Gaza - Ma'an - Twelve people, including a police officer and a young girl, were killed in clashes between de facto government security forces and members of the Dughmush clan in Gaza on Tuesday morning.

A fierce gunbattle broke out after security forces attempted to arrest three members of the family. Medical sources said that 12 people were killed, contradicting an earlier report from the police that only four were killed.

Hamas police have detained 15 Palestinians amidst the ongoing battles. Sources also reported 40 injuries in Gaza.

Islam Shahwan, spokesperson of the security forces in Gaza, said that "he security campaign operated in the As-Sabra neighborhood in Gaza City caused death of three wanted persons from the Dughmush family in addition to a policeman and a number of injuries."

Shahwan said that the "wanted" individuals first refused to surrender. After this refusal, police stormed the hiding place. The aim had been to arrest the three.

Sources from police department confirmed that Jamil, Ibrahim and Sa'eb Doghmush were killed during the raid.

Twenty-two-year-old Sameh Mahmoud An-Naji, a member of the security forces, was killed, and an unknown number of others were injured.

Members of the Doghmush were reported to have been responsible for the kidnapping of BBC reporter Alan Johnston in 2007.

Eyewitnesses said that they saw body of a few months year old girl in Ash-Shifa hospital in Gaza who appeared to have "lost her head." She is said to be daughter of Abu Al-Qassem Doghmush, the leader of the An-Nasser Brigades, and armed group close to Hamas.

Medical sources at Ash-Shifa hospital confirmed that there are a "large number" policemen were injured.

Fatah spokesperson Fahmi Az-Za'arir condemned what he called a "massacre" by Hamas forces against the Dughmush family.

Az-Za'arir said in a statement: "These shameful practices of Hamas in the holy month of Ramadan are definite proof that Hamas lost all humanitarian and religious values."

Another Fatah leader, Ziad Abu 'Ein, accused Hamas of war crimes. Urging Arab states to intevene, 'Ein called the de-facto police "gangs," and said Hamas is "willing to make truces with Israel--but not with its own people."

"All factions, forces and civil society institutions call on us to stand against such tyrannical practices in Gaza Strip," he added.

Shahwan described the campaign as "successful" adding that it included other fugitives accused of killing a policeman and other crimes.

The police announced that they seized a explosives and weapons from the building they raided.
