TEHRAN (FNA - Fars News Agency)- Syrian Defense Minister General Hassan Turkmani has arrived in Tehran for talks on defense agreements between the two close allies.

The Syrian defense minister, heading a high ranking delegation, was received at Tehran International Mehrabad Airport by Iran's Defense Minister General Mostafa Mohammad Najjar Saturday.

The visit, taking place at the invitation of the Iranian side, is aimed at following up on joint defense agreements, ways to boost defense ties and talks on the latest regional and international developments.

General Turkmani will hold two rounds of negotiation with his Iranian counterpart.

He will also meet with some other Iranian high ranking political and defense officials.

The three-decade-old alliance between the two states was bolstered in 2006, when they signed an agreement on military cooperation.

Iran and Syria signed the agreement on June 15, 2006 for military cooperation against the "common threats" presented by the Israeli occupying regime and the US.

In a joint press conference after the June talks, Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar and visiting Syrian counterpart Hassan Turkmani said their talks had been aimed at consolidating their defense efforts and strengthening support for one another.

"Our cooperation is based on a strategic pact and unity against common threats. We can have a common front against Israel's threats," Turkmani told reporters after two intensive rounds of talks with Najjar.

"Our cooperation with the Iranians against Israeli threats is nothing secret and we regularly consult about this with our friends," he said.
