Report: 150 tunnels used to smuggle between the Gaza Strip and Egypt
[Report on Israel Radio as transcribed on their website as translated by IMRA]

The Al Hayat newspaper reports that 150 tunnels are used by smugglers between the Gaza Strip and Egypt and the value of the goods that pass through them is estimated at half a billion dollars a year.  According to the report not only weapons and cash are smuggled through but also drugs, food, medicine and cigarettes.

Expert excavators from Rafah and Khan Yunis dig the tunnels, and share the profits with the owners.

Dr. Aaron Lerner  - IMRA:  Israel's ambassador to Egypt was interviewed on the noon news magazine of Israel Radio and declined to comment on Egypt's failure to stop the smuggling.  While reports claim PM Olmert may discuss the smuggling with President Mubarak when they meet this week, experience has shown that until now Israeli officials are always extremely careful to avoid expressing any criticism of Egypt before the media covering such events.  In sharp contrast, the Egyptian officials typically feel free to use the opportunity to criticize Israel before the cameras.
